About the Hotel

The Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs, a Moroccan villa built in 1924, is a rare find. Scottish painter Gordon Coutts had been in Tangiers, and wanted to bring the style of the North African desert to this Southern California one. “Dar Marroc”, as he called his resulting escape, thus became a cultural oasis for local celebrities from Errol Flynn to Rudolph Valentino, and was restored in 1989 as “Korakia” (“black crow” in Greek). The house is a rare 1918 California adobe, with a keyhole-shaped grand entrance and ornate, Moorish wooden doors that whisper of glamour.

Reviews for Korakia Pensione

Lovely but could use a few updates

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

Korakia is a wonderful place with unique character. At the end of the day, I enjoyed my stay there but I wish reviewers would have given a heads up on a few things before I spent that much money. The good: - The staff is wonderful and thoughtful - The grounds are lovely - The included breakfast and little treats were quite good - The room was beautifully furnished and charming - The record player and complimentary records created such a beautiful ambience The not so good: - I stayed in a two story building on the ground floor (tangier studio). The amount of noise between floors was incredibly disruptive and I didn’t get much sleep. They should really tell upstairs folks to be aware of that/tone down the stomping. - The bed wasn’t comfortable. It was also advertised as a queen, but seemed to be a full size. - The windows and doors are beautiful and original, but let in so much cold air and noise from the outside. Some additional weather stripping, particularly in the bathroom, would have been nice. - The shower temperature was very finicky and hard to get it right between scalding and freezing. I truly hate being a Karen about this stuff, but when we’re paying that price, I really hope for some basic comfort needs to be delivered. All that being said, I did enjoy my stay and all the buildings and staff were so lovely. I would go back because it’s such a wonderfully unique place, but I just know now to be very careful about the room I book in the future.

Fantastic Magical Place!

There is something incredibly magical, maybe even spiritual and tranquil about this place. It's my third or fourth time, but each time has been incredibly special and I can't wait to go back every year! The rooms are also unique and pleasant and has everything you need. The one thing that makes his place special is the staff. Everyone is so friendly and nice and accommodating. They listen to your needs and attend to them. The pools are fantastic and the grounds are very serene.

An oasis of peace and good taste

I stayed in the Moroccan-inspired part, and had a great exerience: spacious suite with kitchen and small balcony, books to read and games to play, yoga mats and a record player with a choice of vintage vinyls, little gifts during our stay with some poetry attached, heated pool, great breakfast with different choices every day. A great stay all around

Uncomfortable room

I had a rough stay at Korakia. I booked through Expedia, this is the most expensive hotel I've ever stayed in. My first solo trip after a divorce although I've traveled solo my whole life, all over the world. I arrived FROM THE BUS at 3:00, tired, and excited to be in Palm Springs, I walked from the bus stop with my heavy bags, it's the way I roll. When I arrived at 3:00 I was told my room wasn't available. Seriously? At 3:00? Come on, for a luxury hotel and a tired customer. I'm sure it's because I booked through Expedia that she wouldn't let me in, which is really too bad, you'll find our reviews count the same as anyone else. When I came back later the room was pretty, but useless. My suggestion is you should sleep in your rooms. Because you would have seen how uncomfortable it is - I cannot be the only one who has complained. The light from the Christmas lights shines right through the bedroom. Making it daylight inside (oh we could have turned those off says your front desk girl, oh yeah, at midnight? After I'm so tired and didn't notice it until I turned the lights off?) and something was vibrating every ten minutes. Like a washer on rinse. Over and over, it was so loud the whole room vibrated. How does anyone sleep through that? It was also cold and had no heat? That bathroom and its floor were so uncomfortable and freezing in there. That was honestly one of the worst nights I have ever spent. One of those nights where you hold on till the sun comes up. I couldn't wait to get out of that room. And it was Christmas day. How awful. It was an unpleasant few days and I hope to spare someone else from staying in that room another night. I learned a valuable lesson about value at Korakia, that's for sure. Margaret

Lovely stay

My husband and I just returned from four perfect days at the Korakia. The property transports you to a Morrocan oasis once you walk into the Mediterreanean styled courtyard. This is where you'll enjoy a tasty breakfast each morning (included in the price). Keep going and you'll be at the quiet pool area with its warm salt-water pool. We swam there every morning to get our muscles loose for a day of hiking, biking (they have free bikes you can borrow) and walking through downtown -- just 3 blocks away. We stayed in the Artists Suite which was comfortable and spacious. The bed was comfy (although a bit high and I had to jump up to get in!) It had a small kitchenette although we never ate in the room. Note that many of the standard rooms are on the small side. I looked at a few and they each have their own charms -- but if you need a bit more elbow room, you might want to book a suite. Best of all, the staff are so welcoming and accommodating. They will do anything to make your stay more enjoyable. This is not the place to stay if you're looking for a hopping, nightlife scene. But if you appreciate a non-corporate, laid-back, beautifully landscaped exterior in an intimate historic setting, Korakia might just be what you're looking for. We hope to visit again!

My husband and I were thrilled to find a deal through Luxury Link making it possible for us to book the Orchard House, the premier room at Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs. We just got back from our trip, having spent 2 wonderful days in that beautiful room. The property itself is gorgeous as well. And all within 2-3 blocks of the main restaurant district on S. Palm Canyon Drive. We walked to dinner every night and when we returned, the romantic grounds are lit by Moroccan-style candle lanterns. It's truly a sight! The pool areas are pleasant and water is available during the day, although they could refill the ice and cups more frequently. We also received complimentary fruit smoothies while laying around the pool. The breakfast was served in the quaint courtyard outside the Mediterranean side of the property. The second morning my husband went over to the office (there are no phones for calling, but it wasn't a big deal) and asked if we could have breakfast delivered to our room. About 15 minutes later a nice gal showed up at our gate with hot breakfast on a tray. The breakfasts were by no means fancy or gourmet, but they were both hot and tasty. And there were plenty of oranges, likely from the citrus grove inside the Orchard House gate. But the best part was our room. The pictures online don't do it justice. The space is large and feels both rustic and luxurious. Once inside the gate, closing a few curtains makes the space completely private. We sunbathed on our veranda and read in the shade of the private citrus grove. It would have been nice to have used the waterfall-fed whirlpool, but it itsn't heated and didn't get warm enough to enjoy. We figure they must change the water after every guest, so if you stayed for a week or if it was summer, the water might get more pleasant. We never used the dining room, but enjoyed have the kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator/freezer. It made it possible to eat lunch of cold cuts, cheese, bread and fruit. The atmosphere was perfect for it and made the vacation more affordable. Overall we had a wonderful time. Korakia Pensione was just the place to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. It's a splurge, but we highly recommend it. -A. Shrive
