Occupying a serene spot on America's only tropical fiord along the Golfo Dulce, the boutique hotel of Playa Cativo is enveloped in the snug embrace of the Piedras Blancas National Park and set on 1000 acres of lush private rainforest. A tranquil beach overlooks the crystalline waters off the Southern Costa Rican coast and guests set up lounge chairs on the meticulously groomed lawn to gaze across the expanse. All quarters, designed in contemporary eco-luxe style, are kitted out with polished reclaimed hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings, and large picture windows for stellar ocean views. Accommodations are within steps of the sand and offer all modern comforts such as wireless Internet access, ceiling fans, in-room safes and coffee makers. Bathrooms provide soothing rainfall showers, biodegradable toiletries and plush cotton robes.

It is not an exaggeration to describe Playa Cativo as paradise. It is so beautiful and Tranquil. Our room was very special. The staff and guides, without exception, were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and extremely professional. The food was amazing. We took part in three excursions all of which the guides made interesting and fun. We did not want to leave!

Our stay at Playa Cativo has been absolutely amazing. We brought our kids (tweens and teenagers), and they loved it just as much as we did. The staff is warm and attentive, the views are breathtaking, and the excursions are fun and well-organized. The accommodations are beautiful, with comfortable beds and bedding, and the private pools were a big hit with our family. On top of that, the food was excellent—every meal was a treat! Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, this place is pure paradise. We couldn’t recommend it more!

Feels like you are off grid as this place is half an hours speed boat ride from the nearest port. Much of the food, electricity and water sourced locally. With just 18 villas and about 30 staff its a lovely getting to talk to everyone between tours and downtime. Early to bed and early to rise is the norm and hiking in the enormous Piedras Blancas felt special. The food is fantastic - well done head chef Eduard and his team. Shout outs to the enthusiastic and knowledgeable nature guides in Valeria and Alberto. Plus Mario, Ceilo, Laura, Kendall, Alonso, Daysi, and the unsung team of gardeners, cleaners etc ...and last bit not least Mark Betts the owner who happened to be staying there, and had the vision and leadership required to create and maintain this little piece of paradise. Go there if you can its a special place.

Playa Cativo offers the highest standards of luxury and hospitality in a wonderfully natural environment. This resort is the perfect combination of five star amenities and a remote eco experience, with many options for exploring the grounds and surrounding rain forest, the ocean, and nearby mango groves. The lodge and Casitas are beautiful and comfortable, and the food is particularly note worthy. Many of the fruits and vegetables are organically grown on the resort farm. There is truly something for everyone on the menu, from vegetarian to fresh fish to hearty meat dishes, along with elegant desserts.

This place is just out of this world. Arrive by boat, delightful staff welcome you, eco friendly luxury, fresh fruit and veg to die for….and then fabulous rain forest, animals and birds. Oh and the best ever massage and yoga teacher Daysi. Mosquito nets on the windows, ceiling fans and NO television…. Hurray! Don’t miss the Sloth garden trip where you can see them in the wild at a family farm. Thank you all for making it a fabulous trip for my daughter and me.
