Why stay at a hotel when you can stay at a legend? Combining historic, Renaissance-influenced architectural splendor that includes an opulent lobby, sky-high ceilings and a sweeping staircase begging for grand entrances, Kimpton Sir Francis Drake is where vintage glamour and the ideal Union Square location intersect.

Beautiful hotel. Short walk to transit with a trolley stop right out front. In a very hilly area so walking is a workout so just take the trolley. Very clean hotel and area. zero issues at all. Rooms comfy and well appointed. Bathroom was small but comfortable

I cannot recommend this hotel based on my experience. When we arrived on July 4, our two reserved rooms were not ready, and we had to wait a long time before we could check in. My parents' room was extremely small, and shortly after they settled in, the bathroom started flooding. To the hotel's credit, they moved my parents to a larger room, which solved that problem. They also offered us complimentary mini breakfasts, and we appreciated that gesture. Unfortunately, the most serious issue happened with housekeeping. Someone opened my suitcase and stole my power strip (surge protector). I never used it during my stay because I didn't need it, so it remained inside my suitcase until it disappeared. This is completely unacceptable and made me feel that my belongings were not safe in the hotel. I expect the hotel to investigate what happened, recover my power strip, and take the necessary steps to ensure that no other guest has the same experience.

This hotel is way past its prime. Historic but tired and poorly kept. Has potential but when you see artificial plants in that magnificent lobby……We decided to switch within hours of being there. Not sure why Trip gave it such an endorsement.

Great room! Clean and incredibly comfy bed. I’m a bit of a princess and the pea type (you know the ones) and the king bed was incredible. Don’t miss out on the drinks and small bites at the Starlite rooftop bar. Skip the included breakfast and food at the hotel restaurant “The Post Room”. So much great food in the area, don’t waste time or money there.

Our stay at the Beacon Grand was mediocre. Staff were nice enough and the lobby was beautiful. However, I expected more cleanliness given the four star hotel status and the price we were paying. Several “clean” towels had stains on them and the bathtub was clogged so the water drained very slowly. Our room was never serviced/refreshed during our stay while we were out. On one of the days, we stopped by our hotel mid day and ran into one of the housekeepers walking out of our room but not having serviced it. They apologized saying that they weren’t able to service due to so many rooms they needed to get to. Overall, the stay was underwhelming. The pros were the location and how close the nearest transit access was.
