Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel

As a frequent solo traveler with a soft spot for historic boutique properties, I take these places for what they are - the good and the bad - and the Beacon Grand was simply terrific. Too big to be considered "boutique," I suppose, but storied, accessibly elegant, and lovely. Traveled for one night to attend an off site event. Lobby and the Post Room (the lobby bar/restaurant) are grand and historic, of course, but with a buzzy, contemporary vibe. Room (a standard king) was beautiful and furnished with solid, period-appropriate pieces. Bed was comfortable and bedding clean and soft. Bathroom well appointed. Depending on your needs, location can't be beat. One block from Union Square, Powell cable cars stop right outside the front door, in the heart of SF. This does create some street noise (a homeless guy screaming in the street at 3a.m., delivery trucks and cable car bells in the early a.m.) but that should be expected in an urban environment. Muffled by good windows, but it would be disingenous to pretend it didn't exist. Starlite Lounge had a great vibe; I was disappointed it closed so early on a Thursday (midnight). I didn't want to leave, and I wasn't the only one. The crowd lingered well after 'lights up.' But consistent with any hospitality environment, when it comes right down to it, staff and service are the things that really matter. And the staff here was consistently friendly, polite, flexible and accommodating. Early check in? No problem. Late checkout? Three very reasonable options and again, zero issue. Need to change a pre-made reservation at Starlite? Easy. Held baggage with a smile? Yep. Everything about this place was terrific. I look forward to returning.

Excellent customer service from Management assisting me with my room upgrade upon check-in. A great classic hotel with the fabulous Starlite Lounge on the rooftop as the cherry on top! Perfect location, clean rooms, and nice staff.

We stayed here for three nights the last weekend in September and we really enjoyed our experience. Most specifically, The Post Room on the 2nd floor. We were in the Bay Area for 10 days and these guys were the most welcoming, friendly and fun bartenders we came across. Seriously ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to them!! Their drinks were fantastic too!! We will definitely return when we visit again. Thank you :))

I recently stayed at Beacon Grand for a week long work trip. I had nothing but good experiences from all staff, from the front desk, F&B, and room service attendants! The two bar tenders I got to know were knowledgeable in their craft and also gave some great recommendations for other local restaurants to try out. The front desk staff were cheerful and helpful, and were able to secure a late check-out for me even though it was a very busy week. The thing that stood out the most to me as going above and beyond was the fact that they were able to quickly locate some items I left in the room and were able to mail them back to me after my stay. Most hotels I have stayed at do not have a system in place to return missing items to guests without giant hoops to jump through, or simply stating that they couldn't find anything without even looking. Thanks again, staff at Beacon Grand, I'll be sure to keep you on the list for places to stay when I'm back in the city!

The rooms at Beacon Grand are absolutely beautiful, and the historic building itself has a lot of character. The renovation has been done very well and visually this is a really impressive hotel. Unfortunately, the service was much more inconsistent. Several members of staff didn’t seem particularly interested in helping, especially in the lobby bar, where at times it almost felt like they would rather you weren’t there. On the other hand, the bartenders and staff at the rooftop bar were excellent, very friendly and welcoming. The lobby is extremely lively and busy, which can be fun if that is the atmosphere you are looking for, but the hotel overall can also feel quite chaotic. My friend had a particularly rough night. A dog was barking in a nearby room for hours, and eventually the fire department had to come and gain access to the room. Once that finally became quiet, a party started in the room next door. It’s a beautiful hotel with fantastic rooms and a great building, but the overall experience felt disorganized and much less relaxing than it should have been.
