A cold welcome for brunch

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 hours ago

This is our local country house hotel and we have known it for meals and functions over two decades. Being under a mile away we have not stayed overnight. It has had its ups and downs over that time under three owners. Sadly it is now at its lowest. We called in for the all-day brunch today and the hotel looked so sad. The receptionist, in a sweat shirt, was busy with check outs - reasonable at the time of day. So we headed through to the lounges and bar area which was deserted. When we called a very pleasant waitress explained they were busy clearing away from breakfast. We asked where the Bistro was for brunch and she showed us into a deserted room with bare tables and chairs and a leaking ceiling with bowls on the floor. She gave us menus. With the outside temperature only just above freezing the unheated room was unacceptable and we asked for the heating to be turned on. The waitress apologised and explained she was not allowed to and suggested we move into the bar area or adjoining lounge. The single resident in the lounge kindly offered to share her small free standing radiator but we found a warm rad in the bar area with a table next to it. We ordered eggs Benedict and eggs Royale (smoked salmon) and they were very good, as were the cappuccinos. And the prices were reasonable and served by a very pleasant Canadian waitress. So we were more than happy with the food and service. A quick visit to the spa found it empty of guests but with 4 bored staff members. More leaks in the corridors usually but not always caught by bowls on the floor. The problems of maintaining old buildings in winter are recognised - we live in one! But a country house hotel claiming 4 stars needs to be warm and welcoming. This is neither at present. It is desperately in need of some investment and proper management.

Another lovely stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Another lovely stay at Charlton House. Last stated when it was a ‘Bannatyne’ property, so interesting to see the changes. Decor has been updated in public areas, with new improved furniture as well. Has kept the lovely feel of the property, but is a really good update. Room was wonderful - best one we have stayed in here. Beautiful mezzanine with roll top bath and walk in shower. Food was better than some recent reviews suggest. Hake main course was delicious, pork belly my wife had was delicious, but a little fatty (relatively little actual pork meat). 4 king prawns for a starter a little skimpy, but delicious. Spa has been updated and decor/crumbling stone surrounds replaced. Addition of a cold plunge pool - not my taste, but others enjoyed! Hydro pool was much colder than normal, but that might have been impacted by outdoor temperature, as was very cold. All in all, a lovely relaxing stay with a beautiful room, good food and good spa facilities.

Unexpected treat

We booked this stay as a last minute night away. Having stayed at Charlton house regularly when it was previously owned, but having a terrible experience the last time we stayed, we were unsure what to expect. On arrival, check in was quick and efficient. The downstairs of the hotel has been tidied up and is smart yet cosy. Our room was at the top of the hotel (12) and although small, was comfortable and had what we needed. The room could do with a new carpet and windows but was clean and served its purpose. The spa has been revamped and was great, there is now a small room with sofas allowing more space for relaxing. The restaurant food was delicious, all arriving hot and tasting great. We had steak and risotto for main and would definitely order these again. The service was slow but we were in no rush. After avoiding this hotel for the last few years and being put off by some recent bad reviews, we are glad that we gave the hotel a second chance and will definitely be returning.

Lacking management

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Overall quite disappointed. The bedroom was comfortable and clean and it was good to see the spa area had been given a coat of paint and general freshen up. But it is missing so much. Unfortunately the food is not good enough. The food was average at best and certainly not worth the money. I would definitly urge guests to eat elsewhere. Dinner was poor and certainly not worth the inflated hotel prices. The staff were genuinely not interested, with the exception of the lady who checked us in and the young man who served our dinner. As per previous comments the hotel need to work out what they want from it. It is crying out for a manager/ management with attention to detail. If that was addressed then it could be a great place.

Marvellous Montigo!

Hubby and I had a wonderful pre Christmas overnight stay and spa at the Charlton House. We stayed in the Crows nest room, top floor overlooking the garden. Very quaint and in keeping with the grade listed building providing everything we needed for our stay. Toiletries, safe, tea/coffee/ bottled water, robes and slippers and more. The spa area was clean and very relaxing, the hydro pool wonderful! and the outside hot tub a lovely feature, especially when the lights dim which adds to the relaxing ambience. Bar & Dining experience was also very nice, we had lunch, dinner and breakfast during our stay all of which was delicious and perfectly cooked. The staff were welcoming and friendly throughout the hotel and happy to be of service. Overall we had a very pleasant stay and already planned our next!
