Founded on Englandâ€(TM)s great country house traditions, Charlton House brings a sense of imagination and flair to an old favorite. Tucked into the rolling hills of Somerset, west of London, the manor dates back to 1630. The dramatic décor, however, heralds a new era in design with 25 bedrooms possessing their own identityâ€"in one you may find a grand sanctuary, in another a cozy retreat with a secret garden. Distinguished with a Michelin star for the past seven years, the house restaurant presents imaginative cuisine using fresh West Country produce.

We had our work Christmas party at Charlton House, for the 3rd year running, on Friday 6th December. The location is perfect, and the staff couldn't be more helpful. We had a couple of minor hiccups at the very start of the evening, due to staff absences, but they were so quickly rectified I don't think anyone else even noticed. The food was very good and the service excellent. The highlight for most of us was the entertainment! Tom, DJ, singer, entertainer was brilliant! He interacted with all of us, has an amazing voice and got the grinchiest of us up dancing! He was our DJ last year too so I am really hoping he is a regular fixture! We are definitely booking again next year. All in all an excellent Christmas party, thank you so much.

We made a late booking at Charlton House hotel via booking.com. The hotel rang to confirm our booking on the day we were due to arrive and it was clear that a mistake had been made and the booking was for 1 person double room with breakfast and not 2 person . We tried to contact booking.com for over an hour with no success as the code we were given was not accepted. We phoned Charlton House to explain this and a very nice receptionist (Chanel?) said OK, don't worry, I've amended the booking and it's now two people. However, when we arrived at the hotel there was no change in the booking, we were told that the system could not be altered, and then given a 10 minute lecture about how we should have booked with the hotel directly and NOT used a 3rd party booking portal. After we returned from eating dinner out I asked to see the manager (who is not on site, and only accessible by email, it would appear), and thus the duty manager. Someone came along who claimed to be the duty manager (despite wearing normal hotel receptionist attire), and again said the booking could not be altered, and we should not have used a third party as things often go wrong booking this way and we should have booked directly. However, this time, and as a one off gesture of goodwill, they would alter the booking and add the 2nd person on including breakfast. The next morning however at breakfast I noticed that there was only one person marked as being on the restaurant sheet, and sure enough on checkout they wanted the extra for the breakfast. Again, I asked to see the duty manager, who this time appeared to be genuine, who again said that we couldn't have been offered a free breakfast as the system could not be altered and we owed them for the breakfast. I said that I wouldn't have had the breakfast otherwise, and I didn't appreciate being lied to by your staff. Again, we were subjected to a long lecture on how we would not have caused this problem if we had booked directly and not used a 3rd party - attempting to point out that it is not our fault if they advertise their hotel through 3rd parties, and why do so if you don't want people to come to your hotel this way seemed to fall on deaf ears. Eventually, the duty manager without apology said "I've removed the payment" - I'm still not clear how this was done on a system that supposedly can't be altered and am still wondering if my credit card will be charged for it at some point in the future. In summary we felt humiliated and treated like 2nd class citizens compared to other guests, simply because we chose to book via a method which they did not like - how were we supposed to know that? This really is not what you expect from a 4 star hotel - shocking interpersonal communication and service skills. By the way the breakfast is not worth having. As it was a weekend it was a self service buffet, the choice of items quite limited, and the hot food in heated food servers very ordinary, certainly not 4 star.

Had an amazing afternoon tea today for my friends birthday. The hotel was warm cosy & beautifully decorated for Christmas, with such a relaxed & calm atmosphere. The staff were friendly polite & couldn’t do enough for us. Our afternoon tea was well presented, We had sandwiches cakes & scones & they were all so fresh & delicious. We were completely full after. We highly recommend this beautiful hotel. Many thanks Evette & Katie

We had an absolutely lovely stay at Charlton House. I loved the spa, pools and hot tub and in particular, Maddie, member of staff, who was completely wonderful and I absolutely loved. We will be back to see you Maddie! Hopefully sooner than later.

We have used Charlton House for many celebrations over the years and its been one of our favourites and our group of friends, but sadly no longer. Today we went for lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary & I am sad to say it was distinctly average. I wish we had taken time to read the reviews rather than relying on our fond memories. We wandered into a completely dead lunch venue, the conservatory which has seen better days. The classy tables have been changed to ones which make it look like a canteen. The flower beds outside are full of weeds & the external windows need attention & look rundown. I had extremely spicy chilli prawns and my husband had a very rubbery monkfish tail ( a good description in another review!). For the main course he had the Sri Lanka chicken curry which was runny with very wet bland rice. My pork belly was OK but I had the audacity to ask to change the polenta for some fries, which they charged another £4.50 for! The best part was the desserts. Before we went today I had bought my mum an afternoon tea for a Christmas treat & just hope it will be OK.
