Founded on Englandâ€(TM)s great country house traditions, Charlton House brings a sense of imagination and flair to an old favorite. Tucked into the rolling hills of Somerset, west of London, the manor dates back to 1630. The dramatic décor, however, heralds a new era in design with 25 bedrooms possessing their own identityâ€"in one you may find a grand sanctuary, in another a cozy retreat with a secret garden. Distinguished with a Michelin star for the past seven years, the house restaurant presents imaginative cuisine using fresh West Country produce.

We had an absolutely lovely stay at Charlton House. I loved the spa, pools and hot tub and in particular, Maddie, member of staff, who was completely wonderful and I absolutely loved. We will be back to see you Maddie! Hopefully sooner than later.

We have used Charlton House for many celebrations over the years and its been one of our favourites and our group of friends, but sadly no longer. Today we went for lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary & I am sad to say it was distinctly average. I wish we had taken time to read the reviews rather than relying on our fond memories. We wandered into a completely dead lunch venue, the conservatory which has seen better days. The classy tables have been changed to ones which make it look like a canteen. The flower beds outside are full of weeds & the external windows need attention & look rundown. I had extremely spicy chilli prawns and my husband had a very rubbery monkfish tail ( a good description in another review!). For the main course he had the Sri Lanka chicken curry which was runny with very wet bland rice. My pork belly was OK but I had the audacity to ask to change the polenta for some fries, which they charged another £4.50 for! The best part was the desserts. Before we went today I had bought my mum an afternoon tea for a Christmas treat & just hope it will be OK.

This visit to Charlton house was a 15 year anniversary gift for my wife so no expense was spared for a luxury 1 night stay for us both. We arrived on time to have our 1 hour massage treatments which were really good. Unfortunately it went downhill from there, the light lunches we had were not what we ordered, which wasn’t a massive problem. But when we checked into our room an hour later we discovered there were no curtains on the two windows, one window overlooked the restaurant. Hugely overpriced cocktails in the afternoon followed by a mediocre, so say rosette 2 course meal, definitely don’t order the monkfish tail starter as you get the smallest half finger size piece of monkfish, main course’s were ok but both of us were still hungry afterwards so ordered the £15 cheese board which still wasn’t sufficient for what we had paid. Anyway, after paying £550 for a 1 night stay, I felt a little ripped off and am sure there’s plenty of better hotel/spa’s which will give you much better value.

Booked a one night D B &B with a spa treatment and spa access included. However, upon arrival we were advised that the swimming pool and Jacuzzi were cold as they had both suffered with technical issues. Apparently we'd been contacted at noon on a home phone, but as we were traveling, we had not been made aware. The young reception staff seemed to think that we would be happy with the offer of £20 per person compensation instead of being able to enjoy all the spa facilities, with a second option for a full refund and go elsewhere! Thankfully a more senior employee (the wedding planner) was able to intervene and offer a better amount of compensation with room upgrade which due to our very long car journey we accepted. However, the dining room is very uninspiring (as was the mediocre food) in comparison to the other well staged lounges, common areas and our bedroom suite which was vast. Upon reviewing the dinner bill we'd been overcharged by £13 for the wine, which we had to get refunded. At breakfast the sourdough toast was limp and soggy and English muffin uncooked/chewy and had to be sent back to the kitchen as inedible. Our room had no milk for tea/coffee which we only discovered after retiring. The spa treatments were good but overall the total experience disappointing and I won't be returning .

Our room was lovely and clean, the spa was really nice and the massage fab but that’s where the positives stop. The hotel staff were awful, every ask was either ignored or made to feel like a complete inconvenience. We had to ask so many times for the most simple things, I went to reception 3 times to get a tea cup for the room and then had to find my own milk from the dining room. I asked for water glasses and spa robes and the request was just ignored. Asked for coffee at breakfast it never came, nor did the sauce I asked for. Breakfast was poor quality and a long hair (not mine)in the cooked breakfast was pretty off putting! Housekeeping was non existent so I went to the spa to take some clean towels from there (no point asking at reception!) I was charged a random £10 for something I didn’t buy prompting a further trip to reception. There are no phones from room to reception, helpfully they offer a WhatsApp number to make contact but I’m still waiting for my message to be read two days later! I’m not sure why the staff at Charlton house want to work in hospitality - they clearly hate being hospitable!! Such a shame as the venue is so lovely so it has such potential but if you dare to want a tea bag, glass for water or clean towel don’t expect it here!!
