The Leela is ideally situated in Kovalam with easy access to two beaches, local life and has lovely cliff top views. The buildings are spacious, modern and clean but some areas lack Indian charm. We had a Royal Club room. The club area has its own pool which is nice, as is the afternoon tea although personally I found the restaurant in this area overly ‘modern’ and the piped music disappointingly soulless! All the staff are very keen to be helpful and we were asked frequently, sometimes overly often, if we were happy with the service/hotel. We found having a specific person (Poulomi) to refer to was helpful and she was often checking all was well. Additionally the manager of that area is very friendly, professional and efficient. The only issue we had which was sorted out on the final morning was that in the main restaurant we never received exactly the breakfast we ordered! Also the serving of tea/coffee was far too slow and needed more staff allocated to that role! Finally, if you are a wine drinker be prepared either to pay a great deal for a glass even during the happy hour, or instead go and buy a bottle from the wine/beer shop along the main road next to the FabIndia shop! Having said all of this we have now enjoyed staying at the Leela four times , each time after we have stayed at more rural/traditional hotels. We are hoping to go again next year but at present those plans are on hold as the price we have been quoted is approximately 30% more than we paid this year!!!! Maybe the hotel can get enough business from the super extravagant wedding parties and the conferences. rather than from British holidaymakers?! I hope not. Watch this space!

We had an amazing experience this week at The Leela through the Leela Trail program. Our butler, Rahul, made our experience above and beyond with his attentiveness and thoughtfulness throughout our stay. We enjoyed the Ayurvedic spa, the yoga classes, our meals, and excursions away from the property - all facilitated by Rahul. He also added small touches during the week and was always available if we needed anything.
