Tucked away in the peaceful community of Ballard, California, The Ballard Inn & Restaurant effortlessly embodies the adage, "the best things come in small packages." A divine bed & breakfast retreat amongst the idyllic vineyards of Santa Barbara's Wine County, Ballard Inn was recently voted one of America's "Top Ten Most Romantic Inns," and remains an ideal retreat for two. Upon your arrival, enjoy a glass of the region's finest on the inn's wraparound patio surrounded by fragrant foliage, or retreat to the soft color palette of your room. The inn's 15 rooms are elegantly and uniquely designed, with a calming, country theme, and each with its own individual story. Mildred's Room is decorated in soft blues and cream hues, and was named for the original owner's daughter, while the inn's most romantic room, Cynthia's Room, boasts a king sized bed, in-room fireplace, and private bathroom, all bathed in sensuous and soft red tones.

We were sadly disappointed in our whole experience at the Inn. It started before my arrival when I received a phone call at 10 PM at night telling me that I had to give them a new credit card number. They apparently changed the payment system and had lost track of everyone’s card information. They rudely told me if I didn’t get them a new card immediately they would cancel my reservation, I happen to be at a party without a card and leaving the following morning at 6 AM to get on the flight to California . then though it was their error when I asked for the current price on the room, which was less than I booked for they denied me. We arrived at the hotel. There are no TVs whatsoever. This went normally be a big deal, but it was election day and there was some news that it would’ve been interesting to watch, we were told there would be 24 seven and there is an adorable coffee shop across the street where we could get lattes in the such. It is now 7:42 AM there isn’t any employee in the end, there is no coffee, and the charming coffee shop across the street is actually closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You would think with only one little business being in town they would know the days it was open and closed. it’s nice but the paint is peeling in the bathroom and it’s probably seen better days and for the price point. I don’t think it’s worth the money.

I spent two nights at this hotel and was informed by both of the employees that would receive some sort of compensation back because we were absolutely freezing in our room because the heater was not working. Supposedly an electrician came out to fix it while we were gone on Saturday but it was still broken. They gave us a tiny roll away heater to "fix the problem" which clearly didn't work. We did not sleep either night and, we’re informed that the room beside ours also didn’t have working heater either. The staff was incredibly rude and the manager Rodney Stillwell sent me an email totally disregarding my concerns and didn't bother to call me back when I asked multiple times for them to do so. Worst bed and breakfast ever! Don't stay here.

We had a nice stay at the Ballard Inn, but my disappointment stems from having high expectations in light of the cost. We paid $524/night, not including tax. I don’t claim to know the financials for running a business like this, but at that price point I expected something that felt more special than what we experienced. Our room was “fine” — the bed was a bit squeaky and the mattress seemed a bit old, where in sank more in the middle. The bathroom is small, with the sink outside of the bathroom. The view is of the parking lot in back. The Inn is kept very clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast was creative and good quality. The common spaces were attractive and comfortable. Parking is easy and plentiful. The wine and snacks from 4-5PM were a nice touch, though the one bottle of red wine put out for self serve was finished off by other guests by 4:30PM with no replacement served. (There were two bottles of white wine served each day as well.) If the room rate had been $300-$400, I would have been felt like I got what I expected.

Stayed here over birthday weekend in June. Hotel was clean and the breakfast was good. We checked out and they texted me my husband forgot his shirt they offered to mail it for a fee. Great his my cc number and please make it. Flash forward 4 months later and no shift. I have probably tried half a dozen times to get the shirt with no luck. They went so far as to send me a fake tracking number that says UPS never received the package. I really hope this hotel is not marketing itself as a high end hotel because the service is horrible. Do not offer to accommodate a customer and then lie and fall flat. It’s just sad that these hotels are charging so much and treating their customers like this. If fine if you can’t mail but don’t offer and then lie about it.

This Inn has a lot of potential. The staff there could extend themselves a bit more and see how the guests are doing during their stay. There’s no connection between the staff and the guests. The restaurant has potential. Breakfast was ok. Choices are limited. The happy hour is really nice with a lovely charcuterie board and wine put out for the guests. There is a charm about the Inn, but I just didn’t feel it from the front desk employees upon checking in and during our 3 day stay. An Inn to me is supposed to be warmer than a Marriott hotel
