Not opening on time and cancelling reservations

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I booked for April 2025 a while ago but they just cancelled it and said they won't be opening until Summer 2025. We booked a special trip for my dad's 75th birthday with a large group of family. We spend a fortune on airfare and they emailed us out of the blue. Beware when booking! They did not seem apologetic. Who knows if and when they will open.

Tres Rios (Kimpton) - Big Changes and Beautiful Memories. An Honest and in-Depth Review

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My husband and I just spent 2 and a half weeks at the former “Hacienda Tres Rios” which has now partnered with Kimpton and is now referred to as “Kimpton Tres Rios”. We discovered many changes , some were good and some not so good. THE GOOD- 1) Food and Restaurant and Beverage Service (we found the food variety, food quality and staff customer service at all the restaurants and pools amazing! Improved!. Some highlights were the updated restaurant.decor and freshness, A highlight was my husband’s birthday celebration surprise at Abreje (Marcus and Luis come to mind as going above and beyond) Customer service in the restaurants was amazing by Edgar (Kotori) also by Jose, Miguel, Cochis and just about everyone else! Pool beverage service by Victor, Jona, Felipe and Edgar was great. We had good experience in the updated lobby bar and sports bar and coffee, pastry and ice-cream shop. 2) Guest Services, Front Desk, Reception and bellmen - Sara Rohdan, Gina Mora provided an amazing room and met with us personally to answer questions about the new changes to the rooms and our concerns. Pablo and Kevin at the front desk were awesome and so caring and friendly and Pablo went above and beyond for us to extend our stay! Abraham and Jonathan are amazing! Abraham went above and beyond to assist us with getting pesos from a bank ATM and was always so friendly and kind. 3) Herencia Butlers- Daniel, Ruth and Alma as personal butlers for Herencia members met our every need and request. Each time we stay and experience this unique service and these amazing people, we yearn to come back for more! I truly hope Kimpton retains this. 4) Activities and Natural Experiences- There are so much fun and diverse things to do at Tres Rios. It’s is what sets Tres Rios it apart and above the rest and why we return year after year. We took advantage of swimming in the beautiful rivers, walking the nature trails, snorkeling in Aguila Cenote, swimming in the beautiful resort pools and exploring f the resort. We sailed the catamaran and took a garden tour and Senses tour. Of special note - Andi in activities made everything easy and enjoyable for most of our activities and Alexander took us on a garden and orchid tour that was by far the best and most informative ever. I hope the concept of nature and immersion and fun will always be a priority and maintained. 5) Wildlife Experiences- At Tres Rios you get up close and personal with beautiful wildlife such as exotic birds, cute furry friends and iguanas. A highlight was seeing the beautiful blue Yucatán Jays on our balcony daily. 6) Coconut Divers and Painting with Juan was awesome as always. Another fantastic dive and snorkel experience and beautiful ceramic fish I painted to bring back home! THE BAD 1) The rooms. The bed is very comfortable but otherwise I was disappointed. There is a complete lack of drawers. There are actually none in our room. Other guests we spoke to said the same thing. Guests have to now live out of suitcases or use closet shelves and store things in the open. It doesn’t feel like a home and comfortable like it used to. The 2 new brown plastic hanging lamp balls are cheap looking and they offer no light and the one is the bedroom is hanging so low it hit even my head and I’m 5 foot 3. My husband had no reading light over his side of our bed as they have now removed the beautiful overhead and custom stone panel back lights. The furniture in the rooms seem cheaper. I miss the high quality beautiful and unique ones. The kitchens have been taken out and there is no longer a kitchen sink. Only a coffee maker. Any dishes or cups need to be washed in the bathroom. There are no longer any plates, bowls or silverware, only a few wine glasses and coffee mugs. The fridge is now reduced to a tiny bar one with no freezer and it is inside a cabinet where heat doesn’t escape. I don’t trust food in it. It lost the home feel and feels like a hotel room. The color scheme now in the rooms is bland and there is no color - only tan and white - no artwork. The room feels cheapened. The master toilet is a smart toilet and fancy however. The now bathroom lighting worked on and off for our stay. 2) The Lobby. I almost cried. The beautiful colorful hacienda look now has a giant black square water feature. The furniture and concept is now modern minimalistic and uncomfortable and does not promote sitting to visit with each orher and other guests. I witnessed a guest trip and fall when he stumbled on the corner of the enormous new water feature’s outer low walls which are white just like the floor and hard to see. The new renovations and tiles at the front reception desks areas are dark and un- welcoming and like subway caves. MMaybe adding plants and desks to the back areas which are empty will help. I miss the warm, colorful and welcome feel of the precious lobby. THE TAKEAWAY When my husband and I got out of our rooms and avoided lingering in the lobby, we actually felt spoiled and right back and home and loved our stay! Which is wby we even extended it!! We would still highly recommend Kimpton Tres Ríos and await the dust settling and the final renovations and updates and have our fingers crossed it will getter better and better! Keep the atrial resources, the long term staff and the service! They are what make it!!

Temper your expectations and you’ll have a great time

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

A lot of things to like about this resort, but it is definitely a bit rough around the edges as it is under construction and seems to be many months out from being complete. But can be a great time as long as you’re expecting those rough spots (as we were based on reviews we’d read on here). Pros: —Beautiful grounds. Lots of wildlife around the resort, the adult pool was relaxing, and the other pool with the waterslides was fun. —Great service from wait staff, especially Victor at the pool bar. —Drinks and food were all good. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet selection and the Mexican restaurant in particular. I don’t know what they put in the margaritas at the Mexican restaurant, but they were some of the best I’ve ever had. —The beach was nice and not too crowded. —The on-site cenotes were very nice. Definitely recommend the cenote-to-sea snorkel that the resort offers. —We stayed in a newly renovated room. The aesthetic was nice, the bathrooms were huge, and the beds were comfortable. Cons: —Despite being a newly renovated room, there were leaks in two places in the ceiling, which constantly dripped. One was in the closet and the other in the bathroom. They were in out of the way places, so easy to avoid, but not great nonetheless. —The AC throughout the resort failed for a couple of days. It made for some pretty warm nights although, being December, it wasn’t terrible. —The rooms don’t have any storage other than a closet with a few hangers (i.e. no dressers etc.) so we ended up having to live out of our suitcases/ stack clothes along the edges of the room for the week. —Despite being in the main building and just a few steps from the lobby and bars, the WiFi signal was not strong enough to use in our room. In my mind, the grounds, food, and service outweighed the poor construction quality of the room, and I think this can be a fun spot for vacation as long as you go into it with those expectations.

My wife and I took the four-night package in August and really got our money's worth! The service from the entire staff was phenomenal. The nature activities, including biking and kayaking through the terrain and rivers, are not to be missed. The beach was beautiful. The complimentary wind surfing boat ride was very special. The quality and quantity of food available was amazing and I am a NYC food snob! And the top shelf liquor was always available! I could go on... Visit this property!!
