An art deco masterpiece, Belmond Copacabana Palace is the crown jewel on the world's most iconic beach. Since its doors swung open in 1923, this landmark hotel has entertained the rich and the famous. A hive of activity, this is the spot to mix with Brazil’s elite over caipirinhas. What’s more, it’s the best seat in the house for Rio’s theatrical highlights: the spirited spring carnival and firework-flecked new year.

As a special treat we booked into the Copacabana Palace for tow nights on our return to Rio, after six night in Buenos Aires. From the moment our taxi doors opened at the front entrance until we departed. Staff took our bags and led us to reception where we were checked in by Kevin. Everything was explained and given a refreshing drink during the process. We had booked a One Bedroom Avenue City View Suite with Breakfast. As it was our anniversary we were upgraded to a Pool / Beach View Suite. We were then escorted through the hotel and to our room by another member of staff (didn't get their name). Our bags arrived shortly after. Inside the suite was a hall, kitchen area, sitting area, bedroom and bathroom with bath and operate shower. There were flowers, chocolates and fizz. There were even a pair of Havaianas at each side of the bed - who on earth do they know your correct shoe size before you arrive ?? The room was superb, the bed extremely comfortable, the shower power perfect, 2x TVs with international channels and a view of the pool and a part of Copacabana Beach. The hotel is understated old fashioned class and style, but the huge attraction is the staff. Every single one goes above and beyond. Restaurant, reception, housekeeping, lobby, pool and spa. Every one is engaging and professional with every interaction. There's even a member of staff poolside who will clean your sunglasses. On checking out we had a few hours before our taxi and were allowed to use the pool and change in the spa. Breakfast choices were plentiful and again top quality and again impeccable service (Diego). We also ate at Pergola Restaurant both nights and the Lobster Tempura was truly magnificent as was the steaks we had both nights. Again top service. A truly magnificent experience from start to finish, the only disappointment was we only stayed for two nights. On our return to the airport on departure we used the hotel driver Mario, and during our drive to the airport we had the benefit of his great knowledge and information about his great city and his home. A truly magnificent experience.

This is my third time staying at Copacabana Palace and unfortunately it will be my last. We stayed in the tower wing (room 151) in a suite with a pool and ocean view. The room itself is very spacious and the view is lovely but it is very dated and the carpeted floors are disgusting. I will provide photos but there were red dots on the carpet (someone’s old blood??) and it was extremely dirty-looking. For a five star Belmond property costing 750 USD per night, get a steam cleaner! We relayed our concerns to the hotel manager who told us next year they plan on closing the tower wing for renovations. It should be closed now. Other that the room (which gets one star), the pool and food were excellent (five stars), hence I split the difference. Service was overall excellent; however, they provided us with a free bottle of brut rose Copacabana Palace champagne in our room upon our arrival and when we asked for them to chill it for us at 4pm to be ready when we returned to our room at 6pm, well that wasn’t done which was frustrating. For the price, stay at Emiliano or Fasano if you want to be near the beach with more modern, clean rooms.

This is what hotel service should be. Exceptional service, beautiful room and hotel, sparkling clean and a very attentive staff. Lush decor with every amenity. Style, comfort and just marvelous.
