Good family trip; Glass Blowing was Great

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

We took family (ages 11 and 12) and three adults. We did lots of activities. Glass blowing was AWESOME and totally worth it! We took away a great momento. Ice skating was a big hit--because it is hard for us to otherwise do. The mountaineer experience was also very cool (and cold ,but worth it). As noted, the arcade is pretty small, but provides an alternative. Prime 44 is outstanding! Draper's is great (ice cream is fantastic). Biggest thing to watch for (particularly with off season) is times for restaurants/reservations. Very nicely decorated for Christmas. The decor will not be to everyone's taste (as it is very strong, but our beds were comfortable, water pressure good, etc.

Not luxury

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I was expecting a luxury resort, and this was not it. The rooms and common areas are dingy and in desperate need of remodeling. The bed was the most uncomfortable I’ve ever slept on- my neck and body ache terribly now. The food is overpriced and my dinner came back to haunt me the next day. Other than the small arcade and bowling, there was not a ton to do for my 7 year old. The indoor pool was not the most kid-friendly, so we didn’t venture there; although I did appreciate life guards were on duty. I was happy to be able to bring my small dog (for a $250 fee) and the ladies at the coffee shop were very friendly each morning. Those two things won’t bring us back though. If you want a resort like this one, but actually worth the price, I’d recommend the Homestead.

Faded Glory

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Please save your money. The food is terrible ( instant mash potates-frozen chicken tenders; and this is the adult menu)- kids survived on chocolate-if the wait line wasn’t around the hall. The best deal is $40/per breakfast buffet. The staff is trying..though the foreclosure may happen at any time. The shops haven’t ordered in supply since spring. Which.. may apply to food being less available. Nothing like it once was. Just park and walk through then drive on…

Disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I will start with my mom was here many years ago and we were excited to come here as a family to spend some time at Holidays. It was not the experience my mother remembered from her past visit. The place is beautiful but did see some areas in need of repair ceilings and such. The staff was all amazing, kind and helpful. They did seem to be very short staffed however. We traveled with our 2 younger children and lunch options and dinner options were very limited. Breakfast was as well with the exception of main dining there is only coffee shop which always had a long line. One family member was sick after eating at the golf course the first night and had difficulty getting anything from room service that ws lite and all we could find was tomato bisque for dinner for her no chicken broth or soup to be found. We did the bunker tour with Frank who ws very knowledgeable and kind and friendly we enjoyed that. We really enjoyed the escape rooms with Gamemaster Mike he was alot of fun, we highly recommend both activities. We did the indoor history tour again very enjoyable. We tried twice to see the president's cottage. We were told by concierge it was open 12-4 as it is listed on website. Both days we could go it was closed and concierge did not know till another couple we ere with told them. We were not able to see it at all during our stay. The kids wanted pizza for lunch and there is supposedly a 24 hour pizza place that again we were told by concierge and by website it was open but it ws dark and doors locked the whole time we were there. The one lunch place had 2 hour weight for lunch and coffeehouse has super limited options so my kids actually did not get lunch the one day because they ate at the coffeehouse the day before and did not want the same thing again. pimento cheese was spicy which in not great for kids. Pool was nice except there were 3 lifeguards all sitting together in the center talking barely watching the pool, hope nothing happens on their watch. Ice skating was great! Bowling and arcade was alot of fun. Tea was insane people grabbing cookies like it is black friday.. maybe they were hungry from no lunch. The bar was nice and we ate there the last night but we had to sit in the lattice room(white room between ballroom and bar area) and a photographer came in and started setting up and taking pictures so the flash was unpleasant but it is extremely hard to find a place to sit and you can only order food if you have a table. So frustrating. Pizza and burgers at bar were really good. Service was good but be prepared to wait there was only 2 cocktail waitresses for all 3 huge rooms and 2 bartenders, way inderstaffed but they did well considering. We had reservations at Forum one night it was the best we had really while we were there. Breakfast in main dining ws great and service ws amazing. Bellhops, Valet everyone were wonderful. From talking to other guests we understand it has gone quite downhill in recent years. Rumors of owner sucking off profits and putting nothing back into Greenbrier which does explain alot. It is sad. It is a beautiful place with lots of charm but definitely lacking. I hope someone cares enough to put something back into this historic place and do it justice. We did the horse carriage which ws nice. Many of our reservations were messed up despite calling several weeks ago to make reservations for activities. Overall frustring for adults but kids had a great time. Tips: make reservations for dinner and activities early and call back and check your reservations to make sure they are right. If you want to eat lunch at all be to Drappers by 1130am. Pool closes at 6, Ice cream round 730-8. front var is not open for lunch and get there early if you want a place to sit for dinner there by 3 it is filling up. Tea is nice but get there pretty close to start of it if you can. As it is now I believe it is quite overpriced for what is offered and what is available. Will try again in several years maybe and hope it is better. My mother who had been looking forward to this for awhile was quite disappointed with the decline. We have been to other resorts that do not cost as much and are much better. If you are considering booking I would read all the reviews and keep your expectations low. God Bless the employees there they are working their butt's off. Also and FYI almost everything has a 9.75% historical tax and gratuity added.

Fun Time in a Beautiful Setting

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My husband and I spent 6 days at the Greenbrier, the week between Christmas and New Years. Our room was comfortable and beautiful. The common areas of the hotel make you feel like royalty with their grand and elegant architecture and design. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. If you enjoy history, you will love the bunker tour as well as the interior tour, and the slideshow overview. There is always something to do. The spa is great (massage, and facial), you can swim, golf, bowl, watch a movie in the movie theatre, dance, gamble in the casino, eat at great restaurants, take a carriage or sleigh ride (if there’s snow), interact with trained falcons, and more. An elegant, relaxing getaway.

Regarding our trip to The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, what a treat! From beginning to end we felt like we were in heaven. The place is gorgeous, the food is tremendous, and the staff just outstanding! Our kids, aged 8 and 11, rank it as the best vacation ever...and that is saying a lot! We will definitely return...
