Reviews for Laguna Lodge Eco-Resort & Nature Reserve

Great stay but a bit overpriced

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I booked Laguna Eco Lodge a bit last minute. Overall I was happy with the experience but I felt a few things could improve. The good: - the lake view is incredible - the hotel is so quirky and fun - loved the explanation book of where they sourced the textiles and all about the hotel - quiet and tranquil - plant based kitchen! Perfect for vegans and vegetarians and everything in between - staff is wonderful and upgraded our room - fun activities like a nature walk, kayaking, and pool - clean - walkable to Santa Cruz The bad: - the beds are awful. I jokingly noted volcanic rock is softer. I can’t tell if it’s a cultural thing to prefer super hard mattresses but overall not a fan. - the “hot tub” doesn’t exist :/ - no Air conditioning - spotty WiFi - pool is cold :/ - kayaks were great but the staff member helping us disappeared and we had to haul it back on the dock which isn’t super easy - the nature trail is not the easiest to navigate and we got lost Overall a good experience but for the price point I think it was a bit high for a 4 star experience.

We had an incredible stay at Laguna Lodge!

We had an incredible stay at Laguna Lodge. The serene environment, sustainable design, and stunning views made it a perfect holiday destination. The room had the most stunning view across the lake and was beautifully decorated with local furnishings & artefacts. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive, ensuring our comfort at every turn. Waking up to the relaxing sounds of nature and enjoying our freshly prepared breakfast & morning coffee in the beautifully positioned restaurant was a highlight. Highly recommend! We can't wait to return!

this place needs help

the most important thing to know before staying here: this is most definitely not a four star hotel. maybe it was 10 years ago, but not anymore. they gave us a 'complementary upgrade' when we arrived, but our room looked like no one had been inside for months. there was even a spider web connecting the bed cover to the nightstand. In the room manual (likely written and printed a decade ago), they say the food is all local and organic, but the menu is bizarre and there is absolutely no way the food is 'local.' the fruit we were served at breakfast had no flavor, and even the coffee was bad...which was especially surprising since we are in one of the coffee capitals of the world! The staff was very kind but untrained. Clearly the owners of this hotel are asleep at the wheel.

Womderful

What a wonderful place! Secluded (only accessibly by walking path or water taxi), but with easy access to everything Lake Atitlan offers. Super thoughtful, knowledgeable, and hardworking staff. I am a female solo traveler, and I felt very safe. The hotel arranged transport from my hotel in Guatemala City, and to my hotel in Antigua. They also arranged my hike up Rostro Maya, providing a sack lunch, and I was surprised my guide offered to take me into San Juan la Laguna to tour. I learned a lot about the area’s history, and Mayan culture. Food is very good. Will stay there again, and highly recommend!

Don’t be fooled by Conde Naste recommendation - avoid! Peanut allergy reaction and difficult to access after 5pm.

Don’t stay here if you have allergies or want to do anything after 5pm. Staff were friendly but service was passive at best and English limited. Views were impressive, rooms clean but you’ll get a good view almost anywhere on the lake - not worth the trade off being stuck once the public boats stop running. It cost us circa £20 one-way 7pm boat from Panajachel (organised by hotel) and £40 one-way 10pm boat from San Marco. We could have done a lot more on our holiday if we had stayed somewhere more accessible- would recommend San Juan or San Pedro as alternative options. Boyfriend indicated he was allergic to peanuts - had an allergic reaction. Luckily we had anti-histamines and epipen packed, but were unable to do anything for another 2 days whilst he recovered. We were offered an alternative room, but declined on basis it would have been more hassle to pack up our stuff and move. We requested drink voucher as an alternative and we were offered a bottle of wine (worth £4 upon Googling - tasted like vinegar!). Compounded by not being able to eat anywhere else, stuck at the hotel. Luckily packed some cereal bars and had bought some bottled water. We did eat breakfast and had one dinner, not great - had much better food in Antigua. Food and amenities are poor - the “gym” is an old exercise bike, there are 3 grubby yoga mats. Books in recreation room were covered in cobwebs and dead insects. When we booked 7am drive to airport, our taxi did not arrive until 7:30am so we were nervous about making our flight. Would suggest travelling back to Antigua or Guatemala City night before to avoid the stress. Wish we had only booked 1-night or not at all. Again, staff were friendly enough and tried their best with English - but wasn’t what we expected for a hotel advertising itself as English and Spanish speaking. Could easily have similar / better experience for lower price elsewhere on Lake Atitlan.
