Reviews for Gili Lankanfushi

Top tier resort with great value for money

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 23 hours ago

This was our very first trip to the Maldives, and Gili Lankanfushi was our first stop. It’s incredibly convenient—just a 15-minute transfer from the airport. While this proximity does take away a bit of that "castaway" feeling, there’s no doubt about the privacy you get here. With only 45 villas, the spacing between them is generous. During the summer low season, aside from meal times, you’d barely see another guest. Yet, every staff member and maintenance crew greets you with such warmth that it truly feels like home. The resort delivers everything that a first-time-visitor expects from Maldives: stunning lagoon view, powdery white sand, blazing sunshine, and exotic cuisine. A previous Lonely Planet guide gave this island low marks only for social life and family activities, but we actually made a few friends here! Our 8-year-old spent most of her time splashing in the water (you can jump right in from the villa at any time) and became completely obsessed with a ring-toss game, having an absolute blast. Honestly, a 4 or 5-nights stay here is the sweet spot for just about anyone. A seasoned Maldives veteran we met mentioned they always save this island for their final relaxation before flying home. I think beyond the airport proximity, it’s the effortlessly laid-back vibe that draws them back. If I were planning a long Maldivian holiday, this would be my perfect bookend—both the opening and closing chapter. Our Mr.Friday looked after us considerately, hitting to the spot just right. Our villa attendant HaFeez kept our villa spotless. There were so many other staff members whose names escaped me, but I could tell they were either highly experienced or exceptionally well-trained. They read the room perfectly: if you’re up for a chat, they’re happy to keep you company; if they sense you’d rather enjoy a quiet meal undisturbed, they gracefully give you space. Since it was our first visit, we weren’t close with anyone, yet that comfortable, unobtrusive level of service felt absolutely perfect. The resort has been operating for quite long, but thanks to its nature-inspired design, the villas don’t feel dated at all. Instead, they have a unique charm and character. It makes for a very affordable getaway—or rather, incredible value for money. There aren’t many restaurants, but the quality of the fresh ingredients and the breakfast are absolutely top-notch. The main restaurant offers a different culinary theme for dinner each night. The head chef seems to be from India, and I’d say his Indian dishes were the highlight! As our plane took off, I caught a clear view of Gili Lankanfushi from the right window, and a little wave of emotion washed over me. Whether or not I ever return to the Maldives, this place will remain etched in my memory, just like that view from the sky.

One of the Finest Resorts We Have Visited

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

We have been fortunate enough to stay at many outstanding resorts around the world, including several in the Maldives, and Gili Lankanfushi is one that genuinely deserves its exceptional reputation. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this is a resort that gets the fundamentals absolutely right. My wife, our young son and I stayed in one of the overwater villas, which struck a wonderful balance between rustic island charm and understated luxury. The villa was incredibly spacious and beautifully designed using natural materials, creating an atmosphere that felt both elegant and relaxed. Stepping directly into the lagoon from our deck was a daily pleasure. The water was crystal clear, the sandy lagoon was simply stunning, and we regularly spotted rays, small reef sharks and an abundance of colourful tropical fish just metres from the villa. The sunsets each evening were equally spectacular and became one of the highlights of every day. The food exceeded our already high expectations and was one of the strongest aspects of the resort. The breakfast deserves special mention. It is genuinely among the finest breakfast spreads I have experienced anywhere in the world, both in terms of quality and variety. Every morning there was something new to discover, with beautifully prepared dishes and excellent ingredients throughout. Dinner was equally impressive, with different themed evenings that kept things fresh and interesting. During our stay we also enjoyed the Japanese restaurant, an unforgettable private dinner on the beach beneath the stars, and perhaps most memorably, a private dinner at the Jungle Cinema, which was a fantastic experience for the whole family. Even something as simple as the pizzas by the pool were outstanding, which says a great deal about the consistently high culinary standards across the resort. Service throughout our stay was flawless. It was attentive without ever feeling intrusive, and every member of staff seemed genuinely interested in ensuring guests had a memorable holiday. Our Mr. Friday, Makif, was exceptional. He anticipated every detail before we even had to ask and handled every request with warmth, professionalism and efficiency. He truly elevated the entire experience. Ibrahim and the rest of the restaurant team also deserve special recognition for their friendliness, attentiveness and consistently excellent service throughout every meal. There is also an impressive range of activities available, meaning there is never a dull moment if you wish to stay active. We joined a snorkelling excursion with the marine biologist, Matthew, which was both educational and thoroughly enjoyable. The scuba diving was world class, with beautiful reefs and abundant marine life. Our son particularly enjoyed the glass-bottom boat excursion, while the spa treatments were of an exceptionally high standard. The wine tasting was another lovely experience, helped by an impressive wine cellar and an excellent sommelier. The absolute highlight, however, was a private speedboat excursion where we snorkelled with manta rays and sea turtles. It was one of those unforgettable experiences that will remain with us long after the holiday has ended. One aspect that should not be overlooked is the location. We have previously stayed at resorts in the more remote Maldivian atolls, requiring additional flights or seaplane transfers after arriving in Malé. While those islands perhaps offer an even greater sense of remoteness, Gili Lankanfushi provides an outstanding compromise. The short speedboat transfer from Malé is incredibly convenient, particularly when travelling with children, yet once you arrive, it still feels wonderfully peaceful and pristine. At no point did we feel that we were sacrificing the beauty or atmosphere that makes the Maldives so special. Finally, what impressed me most was just how well the resort is managed. The General Manager, Deputy General Manager and Restaurant Manager were consistently visible around the property, greeting guests, checking standards and clearly leading by example. It created an atmosphere where every member of the team took pride in delivering an exceptional guest experience. Running a resort of this calibre requires attention to countless details, and Gili Lankanfushi appears to do so effortlessly. Overall, this was an outstanding stay in every respect. Beautiful villas, exceptional dining, impeccable service, memorable experiences and a remarkably well-run operation all combine to create one of the finest resorts in the Maldives. I would recommend Gili Lankanfushi without hesitation and very much hope to return.

Barefoot luxury in a boutique style environment with a very personalised approach.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

This is a truly lovely medium sized island/resort, and as good as it gets I would say, if you are looking for barefoot luxury with a very personalised approach. The hosts are delightfully friendly and engaged. Our butler, Miffi, produced some wonderful surprises for an anniversary we had. The over water villas are unusually generously proportioned and diving/snorkelling in the areas is very good. The main dining area has a long stretch of beach and offers one of the most memorable dining environments I can recall. The food experience is also as good as I have enjoyed in Asia generally. There are twice daily complimentary cultural experiences of about 45 minutes each allowing you to get to know the staff and the local traditions. I would highly recommend this for a two centre Maldives holiday. Its proximity to Male lends itself beautifully to this. If you like high end boutique hotel experiences, you will probably really enjoy Gili.

Luxury, Simplicity, and Pure Relaxation

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Our stay at Gili Lankanfushi was truly unforgettable. The resort itself is stunning, but what makes it so special is the philosophy behind it. The barefoot concept encourages you to slow down, disconnect from everyday life, and reconnect with nature. From the moment you arrive, you feel a sense of peace and freedom that is difficult to find elsewhere. The island is beautifully preserved, blending luxury with simplicity in a way that feels completely natural. Waking up to the sound of the ocean, walking barefoot on soft white sand, and being surrounded by crystal-clear water creates an experience that is both relaxing and grounding. Most importantly, the staff were exceptional. Every member of the team was warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. Their kindness and attention to detail made us feel welcome from the first day until the last. They consistently went above and beyond to ensure that every moment of our stay was perfect. Gili Lankanfushi is more than a luxury resort—it is a place that helps you reconnect with nature, unwind completely, and create memories that will stay with you forever.
