Sonora Resort is one of the most wonderful and special places we have ever been. Surrounded by nature and wildlife at every turn, and a world class accommodation, food, and staff. We will be back again, and again… AMAZING!!

Absolutely fulfilled all our expectations. Was the best trip we've ever taken. Sonora Resort is without doubt one of the finest in the world. Terrific staff, activities and location. We would highly recommend it.

Bucket List Fishing Trip

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Went to Sonora for my 65th birthday, courtesy of my son, and it was off the charts! Had an amazing fishing guide who knew where to fish and how to land them. Loved the grizzly tour. The resort accommodations, culinary experience and all staff were first rate. Amazing trip, one my son and I will never forget.

Seals, Whales, Sealions, Bears, Eagles, Oh My!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

The location of Sonora combined with the very interesting tide changes along with all the easy access to watch wildlife make this a spectacular experience. One we thoroughly enjoyed. The hotel side was average. It's mentioned many times but the blatant "tips are a must" stated everywhere including the artfully placed tip envelopes to welcome you to your room is tacky for a resort of this caliber. Charge more per night so you can pay your teams better. The rooms are dated/worn, especially for the price and for a R&C hotel. The service is above average for a hotel but below average for a Relais & Chateaux property. The lack of remembering who we were by the same staff every day - with only 30% occupancy was a bit humorous. The included wine is ok but should be better for an R&C property. We stayed for 5 days and ended up with the same exact menus repeated. It's a small, hard to get to place so I get that but the food was okay, not memorable. They don't offer much salmon which is ironic since you see it literally being fished before your eyes. We chose the boat transport option due to luggage limits. Upon arrival to the transport dock in Campbell River, no signage, no help with luggage and hotel staff returning on the same boat to the hotel were borderline rude - this was not a great welcome to Sonora feel but now that we have been there, we get the concept is "casual, fend for yourself" kind of feel for the place. Service aside, we did extended our trip by a day - the place location is just that magical. We did not do any of the air excursions as we opted to do those for a lot less money to see similar when we stayed in Tofino. The wildlife excursions, while pricey, were worth the money - the guides know what they are doing - they have better service than the hotel staff! The Eco tour guide was by far one of the best wildlife guides we have encountered in our journeys. There are actually a lot of places to visit and see for free on the island, especially late summer when the seals/sealions are chasing the salmon. All of that said, it is worth overlooking the tarnish of the dated decor, overpriced experience and pretending you aren't at a R&C property and instead focus on the amazing location, views and nature... you will have a great time...the wildlife will ensure that for you! We will return one day.

Great location but painfully average experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

The only thing this place has to offer is location. Everything else is either grossly overpriced and/or painfully average, in particular: - Rooms: absurdly overpriced, probably the most expensive I've ever been to even though I've been to dozens of Relais Chateaux in a much more reasonable price range. Also, that place should have been renovated at least 15 years ago. - Activities: good range but absurdly expensive. - Food: had 6 meals at the hotel restaurant and not a single one stood out. - Drinks: for the price charged per night you must be in a position to offer more than 2 painfully average red wines and white wines. You should have a more decent selection and also include bottom shelf spirits as a bare minimum. - Service: ok I guess but in my view way too informal for a hotel in that price range. - Tips: the suggested tips per person per day are absurd. Pay your staff better if that's the expectation. I'm sure the balance sheet won't suffer given the price per night. Overall, it was a good experience but merely for the location and wildlife which is in no way the hotel's doing. They must do better for those prices.
