Lower your expectation.

Everything at this resort feels/tastes/looks very cheap. Our toliet has very strong unpleasant back-flush smell that can be smelled in our living room. The air conditioning was so loud that I need to turn it off at night. At last night, I realized the adjacent room kept playing music. I needed to come to the front desk twice after midnight to get them to open the door of our adjacent room and realized their TV was not turned off after the guests left. Then the TV controller was missing so they couldn't even turn off the TV, and I needed to get my TV controller from my room to turn it off.

Oceana staff are the best

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 22 hours ago

Went for 10 nights in November, got to say hotel could do with a refurbishment, but what it lacks is outside seating areas for the evening, didn't really like sitting in the lobby , rooms were nice , comfy beds, defo need to go preferred club, although the preferred bar is in 7th floor at the end of a corridor which isn't inviting. What did make the holiday were the day staff at the oceana, best staff ever, big shout out to Elija, Julian, David and Bradley and fab hostesses Fernanda & Stephani, they were fantastic, such an asset to the hotel, well done guys and thankyou.

Last minute family trip. Solid 3 stars. Property nice, well maintained. Service and food need major improvement

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Last minute trip between Christmas and NYE so our choices of resorts were very limited. For the good. Property is nice very well maintained. We had the preferred family ocean view rooms. Rooms are very spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable. The private beach is really nice and the area is beautiful. Maintenance staff works really hard. AC worked great so we were very cool at night. The area where this resort is feels very safe. Super cute town that is gated very walkable. Very family friendly lots of families with small kids. The preferred area doesn’t face the beach so we didn’t use the preferred area except Breakfast and one lunch. I don’t think they check if you are preferred or not so I’m not sure if the extra price is worth it. We did it to get better rooms. Activity staff seemed very friendly and fun. We have two teenage girls and ur goal was to relax on the beach and comfortable rooms. Again last minute trip there was very little available so given that I was not disappointed per se. Just need to set your expectations. It’s a solid 3 star maybe 3 1/2 given how well the property is maintained. I would give the actual property a 4 star and the food a 2-3 star depending on the day. The service staff and food needs major improvement. Most of the service staff seemed very put out. Very limited food options at each restaurant. Only a couple restaurants are open during the day. Room service had the best service and food quality followed by the bear foot grill on the beach. Drinks seem plenty strong but it’s hit or miss if you get what you actually ordered.

Met expectations for family of four

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Our family of four recently visited for 9 nights! We used a travel agent to help find a property that met all of our needs, including fairly tough-to-find kid-friendly swim-up rooms. This property checked all of our boxes and was favorably reviewed online. It was part of a Southwest Vacations package that included flights and ground transportation rolled into one. Our room was on the first floor and had the swim-up pool. I thought the kids would love it more than they did. I imagined waking up in the morning and sending the kids off to splash in the pool attached to the room, but they mostly just complained that it was too shallow at about 3' deep. Our room was also super conveniently located right next to the main pool, so we just had to walk out a few feet and could order drinks from the Sugar Reef swim-up bar. The kids loved getting all the different smoothies including the flavors of the day. The staff kept the room clean and the fridge well-stocked. Four Dos Equis were always available, and more was always available with a call to room service. Our "preferred" status gave us access to a second pool and exclusive restaurant that we frequented a few times, Oceana. One day while sitting at the hot tub in the preferred club, a fellow vacationer offered me five shots of Don Julio 1942 tequila—who was I to say no! The ocean was not accessible. The manmade inlet provided a nice, safe experience for kids to splash around, along with a sandy beach. I wanted to really get out in the waves though! The one time I tried to venture past the rocks and out into the open water I was whistled at and told to return immediately. The dinner restaurants were all very good. Gohan, the Asian restaurant, proved to be a family favorite, and El Patio had amazing chicken mole. We enjoyed a special additional-fee Christmas Eve dinner for $230 for the family of four that was really good. The breakfast options were either Oceana, the 7th floor Preferred Club buffet, or the World Cafe. Oceana was always great. The 7th floor access had a small but strong buffet selection. Breakfast at World Cafe was one of the only areas that was a little bit of a letdown—they didn't typically serve bacon or sausage, and the overall food quality otherwise was a little subpar. There was an omelet bar, but they were cooking them more like frittatas with the ingredients mixed right into the egg. As a breakfast aficionado, I could really help level up their game with a few tips! A lot of time was spent at the various bars. It seemed the drink quality was far superior in the preferred areas. When I ordered a drink at the preferred club, it was always top-notch. When I ordered at the main swim-up bar, it felt very watered-down. I had about four or five drinks per day over 10 days, and the pattern was very unmistakable—preferred area drinks were always way better. Desire was a nightclub sort of bar that was said to open at 5 but didn't really pick up til later. We went there to watch football a couple times and though it was not technically open during the day, they let us in and put our games on for us. Amstar was an on-site service that helped with transportation and excursions. I would recommend their services. They helped hook us up with fun excursions to Xel-ha waterpark and a catamaran cruise. You can also book a golf cart from the front lobby and buzz around Puerto Aventuras which is good, cheap fun. The Explorers' Club was their version of a kids' club. We envisioned the kids spending a lot of time here and making friends and wanting to be there all the time. In the end, the kids only went 3 or 4 times for a couple hours when we needed some adult time. Our 6yo daughter loved the experience. Our 10yo son was probably a little too old for most of the activities, he told us. But the movie night on the beach seemed like a crowd-pleaser! One night I slipped and fell in my room and the medics were quick on the scene and were very attentive and helpful. I also would highlight Pauline and Alberto as staff members who went above and beyond to make our stay great! Overall I think this property is like a 4.5/5 star experience. If they could up the breakfast buffet a little and have at least one way to access the ocean I would give it 5.

Not well-maintained and not worth the price.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

If you are looking for an average all-inclusive vacation, this place would be ok. Overall the property was not well-maintained. It rained a few days we were there and there were ceiling leaks in several places throughout the resort. Outside the Preferred Club, there are no indoor bars open during the day, you have to go to one of the pool bars to get a beverage. The breakfast and lunch buffets were disappointing. The selections never changed during the 10 days we were there. The elevators had issues. On the good side, the restaurants (dinner only) were exceptional. The service and food in the restaurants did not disappoint. The staff at the Preferred Club were outstanding as well.
