About the Hotel

Poised on a mountainside overlooking the Northern Italian town of Merano, Castel Fragsburg once served as lodging for participants of noble shooting parties, guests of feudal lords and owners of neighboring castles. Today, this historic Relais & Chateaux affiliate uses its rich traditionsâ€"and magnificent surroundingsâ€"to help you renew your spirit. Soothing alpine wood, local antiques and hand-painted beds adorn the bedrooms, while six divine course meals and fabulous views highlight the in-house dining experience.

Reviews for Hotel Castel Fragsburg

Stunning property well worth the visit!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

This stay was outstanding and we would recommend it highly! For the cost it was just an incredible experience. PROS:View! Spa! Food! Room! All were stellar, I especially was thrilled with the spa and the natural products that Renate has curated, she is knowledgeable and a true gem at this hotel. Do yourself a favor and book the bath:) As a chef myself at Relais Chateaux properties I was thrilled with all of the food we had at both restaurants, but actually preferred the Orangerie dinners surprisingly. Extremely helpful staff, thanks to Marina for so much assistance with tracking down local festivities in the area for us to explore, and to all the front desk employees who answered my several questions when booking. Beautiful stunning grounds and indoor space. It felt like a gorgeous greenhouse during meals. The rolling shudders in the room were great we were able to sleep in. Love all of the sensor lights to conserve energy in the halls. CONS: wifi was very spotty so if you need to work that may be difficult. Pool was not heated IMO, it was more like a cold plunge temperature in October, and the whirlpool was a low temp, not as hot as expected and the pool area could use lighting closer to whirlpool, we couldn't see to get out until we moved further around the pool and caught the motion sensors. Mattress felt like it could use a slight upgrade, could feel and hear the springs when moving, also struggled with pillows that didn't support enough, but linens were great! Having a more subtle light in the toilet would have been so appreciated, it's quite bright when you have to go in the night, was really blinding. If you don't catch Favio the bartender for your drinks, they will likely not be that great as he seems to be the only knowledgeable person for cocktails, we started waiting to see him to order a pre-dinner drink. RECOMMENDATIONS: Spread out the food and alternate days. 1 at hotel, 1 somewhere in the city, then the hotel again, etc etc. It is all SO delicious but 5 days of 5 course dinners and breakfasts took its toll and we were very sluggish. Go explore the neighboring cities, Merano, Lana, Algund! The cable cars and little inns you can find to eat and drink at are incredible. For absolutely stunning colors and views I would go just 2 weeks later in October to see it all at peak. Go Explore!! There is so much to see in the valley! Overall we loved our visit to Castel Fragsburg and it was a beautiful and welcoming reprieve. I can truly say as a previous employee of Relais and Chateaux at Blackberry Farm as a chef, this hotel is excelling at meeting those requirements.

Incredible Hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 months ago

Castel Fragsburg is beyond incredible! The views are amazing! I cannot imagine a better view! In addition, the rooms are beautiful! The food is outstanding. Most of all, the people are kind and helpful! They arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the train station when we arrived as well as a taxi to take us to the train station when we departed. When the taxi to take us to the station did not come, I mentioned it to a woman cleaning the floors. She got on the phone, and a woman who worked on the front desk came and took us to the train station. Thanks to her, we were able to be on our train. This was my third time to stay there, and I look forward to staying there many more times!

Excited expectations, really underwhelming

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 months ago

In my opinion, this is not a 5-star hotel. I have wanted to visit this property for years and was really excited and looking forward to my stay. Unfortunately, I found it overall pretty disappointing. The room was very different from what I saw on the booking/website. I understand not all rooms are the same or decorated the same, but it was drastically different in style and touch and sophistication than what was shown - had I been shown pictures of the room I had I don’t think I would have booked this hotel. The property is beautiful with an outstanding view (truly a jaw dropper), but it’s also in need of some real TLC. The pool was old and outdated, the bathroom linens were sparse, the grounds were beautiful but also clearly needed some care and attention. The bathroom and room felt old - not in a charming way but in a totally outdated way. I had a lot of issues with the internet and needed to work while I was there, so at one point was sitting on the floor near the door to get a signal. I had to ask multiple times for the wifi to be checked before it was updated in my room. Upon check in I had some minor issues with service. Nothing was horrible and the hotel is extremely charming and sweet. But in my opinion this is a 3.5/4 star hotel, not a 5 star hotel. I had plans to do a spa day, and decided against it because based on the experience I felt like it would just be disappointing. What was good — the bed (great linens and very comfortable), the view, the restaurant and the restaurant service, the breakfast buffet, the lounge/restaurant decor. I know this hotel is family-run and I feel bad leaving a mediocre review, but I do think it’s important for potential guests to know. I chose this hotel against some other newer options in the region (Forestis in particular) and I just found the overall stay to be really disappointing and below average for a 5-star hotel.

A once-in-a-lifetime visit to a magical Hotel and Spa in a glorious setting! Such attention to detail, Great Staff!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 months ago

Castel Fragsburg is a magical hotel and spa, situated high up in the SudTyrol Alpes, above Merano. It is like stepping back in time to a place of impeccable service, a professional staff who work tirelessly to make sure every detail of your stay is perfect. We arrived to a welcoming aperitif being served to us on the Dining Deck overlooking the town and out to the Alpes. Next we enjoyed a once in a lifetime private wine and spirit tasting and tour of the castle above the hotel. Fabio and Samuel hosted us for the tour of the castle and then led us to a castle room where all the wines and spirits were set up, with two wonderful chairs for my friend and I to sit in while experiencing the tasting. A charcuterie platter was also presented. I heartily suggest that you arrange for the Tasting and Tour prior to your arrival at the hotel! Every aspect of our visit to Castel Fragsburg, the Micheline Star dining, the talents of Samuel's mixology, the elegant room, the incredible spa (Angela game me the best massage I have every had!) and the natural scenic glory of where this resort is located.... all was perfect!!!

OUR THIRD VISIT - IT NEVER DISAPPOINTS

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 months ago

THIS WAS OUR THIRD STAY AT CASTEL FRAGSBURG AND AGAIN IT WAS A WONDERFUL STAY FROM START TO FINISH. THIS TIME OUR ROOM WAS LARGER THANKS TO AN UPGRADE AND WE HAD A WONDERFUL BALCONY OVERLOOKING THE HILLS. IT WAS EVEN WARM ENOUGH TO FINALLY DIP INTO THE POOL.. WE ALWAYS DO THE HALF BOARD AND IT NEVER DISAPPOINTS. WE HAD ONE MEAL IN THE MICHELIN STARRED RESTAURANT AND THE OTHER TWO IN THE REGULAR RESTAURANT. BOTH WERE EXCELLENT - PERHAPS WITH A SLIGHT PREFERENCE FOR THE REGULAR RESTAURANT. DARE I SAY THERE WAS ALMOST TOO MUCH FOOD AT THE STARRED MICHELIN RESTAURANT. WE ALSO DID THE WINE TASTING WHICH IN RETROSPECT WE WOULD NOT DO AGAIN. WE LOVE THE HALF BOARD BECAUSE YOU ARE FREE TO SUBSTITUTE IF THE MENU DOES NOT SUIT YOU. BREAKFASTS AT CASTEL FRAGSBURG ARE ALWAYS A TREAT- SUCH AN ARRAY OF IMPECCABLY PREPARED FOODS PLUS WITH YOU CHOICE OF ITEMS TO ORDER. ONE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR STAY THIS TIME WAS THE TOUR THE SOMMELIER ARRANGED AT A LOCAL WINERY OWNED BY A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER. THEY TOLD US THE STOPRY OF HOW THEY STARTED THE MOTHER STARTED THE VINEYARD BY CONVERTING THE APPLE TREES TO GRAPE VINES . SHE HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH WINE MAKING AND NOW HAS WON TWO GODL MEDALS FOR HER PINOTS - IT WAS TRULY SPECIAL . WE LOOK FORWARD TO A FOURTH VISIT AND MEANWHILE WILL CONTINUE TO RECOMMEND CASTEL FRAGSBURG TO ALL OUR FRIENDS IN SAN DIEGO - THOSE WHO HAVE VISITED HAVE ALL LOVED IT.

Our stay at Castel Fragsburg was a genuine joy. The hotel is perched above Merano and has a grand 180 degree view of the valley below. We were given one of the tower suites which was attractive, comfortable, spacious and had a wonderful balcony. The food was creative and delicious and staff members were warm, friendly and helpful. We are planning our return!
