About the Hotel

We are an iconic designer 5 STAR boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills famous for our luxury escapes, three hat fine dining restaurant, indulgent day spa experiences, conference retreats and breathtakingly beautiful weddings. Mount Lofty House was built in 1852 by prominent statesman Arthur Hardy as his summer house. Arthur Hardy is reminiscent of a South Australian Jay Gatsby; indeed his wife Martha described their lifestyle as ‘a kind of feudal splendour’. Their beautiful manor soon became the state’s premier address for lavish and infamous parties for Adelaide’s elite of the day. From such lofty beginnings the manor was passed through a number of South Australian families, including a period as commune in the 1970s. In the disastrous 1983 fires of Ash Wednesday Mount Lofty House was burnt to the ground before rising from the ashes like a phoenix to truly become one of South Australia’s great icons.

Fairytale getaway

Mount Lofty House is the definition of picturesque and has been picked straight out of a fairytale. From the breathtaking views out of any window to the small little details in each room, exploring the building and grounds provided hours of entertainment and curiosity. Every single staff member went above and beyond to host our family and friends for my cousins wedding and we cannot thank them enough. From the entry to the exit we were catered to with a smile and high quality service. I especially love that the team remembered my morning hot chocolates. I hope to visit again soon and highly recommend this location for a quiet getaway or any major events.

Stuck in a corner

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Any old house modernised to current standards is going to have compromises. Sometimes, the number of compromises you encounter as a guest is the result of your choices; sometimes it's a matter of luck. During our 3 nights at Mount Lofty House, we felt that a mix of bad luck and our own poor choices resulted in us feeling that we were often stuck in a corner - and therefore unable to experience the best of what the hotel had to offer. Firstly, our choice of room didn't turn out to be the best. Our garden room, which I erroneously thought was overlooking a garden, was in fact overlooked by a garden. In other words, it was on a lower ground floor - and stuck in the far corner of said garden. The room itself, compromised by the addition of an internal (very nice) bathroom, was not large. It therefore would have benefitted from a minimalist approach to furnishing. Instead, it was over-furnished and cluttered with what the stylist must have thought were period-appropriate, large, dark wood pieces - one of which even partially blocked the door into the garden area. We were disappointed. Our package included two dinners, one in each restaurant. I shall review these separately, but suffice to say that in both cases we once again felt stuck in the corner or in the background, with friendly but painfully slow service. There's lots to like about Mount Lofty House. The staff are lovely - professional and very helpful. The house is impressive, if a little dark in places. The pool area and gardens are nice, although the pool has a weirdly uneven sloping floor which put me off from using it - not that this would bother a confident swimmer. We really enjoyed the guided tour of the house. Breakfasts were great. Views from some of the public spaces are fabulous. But the overall experience wasn't what we expected.

Our room the Tower Suite 33 was super comfy, pure luxury, the pool was great as it was hot weather, the views are amazing, the food and wine fabulous, the staff are so friendly and professional, you feel special from the moment you arrive. This was a perfect luxury escape, with top-notch service and stunning surroundings! Yep, it's pricey but worth it, we can't wait to go back.

Relaxing Getaway

This is the best hotel we have ever stayed! It felt like a home more than a hotel. Everyone was friendly and helpful, especially Musti, he made our stay so enjoyable and accommodated all our requets from the moment he opened the door on arrival. Service, food and drinks were top class. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We will definitely come back.
