Reviews for Cameron House on Loch Lomond

Four-star experience at five-star prices

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

There’s no denying that Cameron House is a very nice hotel, however there were a number of areas where it fell short of what you expect from a five-star experience. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and initially struggled to find a parking space - there is limited signage and direction to the parking areas. After parking near the lodges reception, we trekked to the hotel reception which was overly busy for the number of staff they had working. Reception area was messy with papers and files lying around. We were told what room we were in and left to our own devices to find it with no offer of help with luggage. Upon arriving at the room, we realised that it did not have a bath despite the listing on Hotels.com saying it would. Thankfully, when we informed reception of this issue we were upgraded to a loch-view suite - in fact the lady at reception informed us none of the Contemporary Standard rooms had a bath and it was an error on the listing. Per other reviewers who had the same issue, the upgrade does not appear to be common practice and it seems as though we were quite lucky. For our evening meal, we opted to remain at the only on-site restaurant that was open - the Tavern. The alternative was the Clubhouse restaurant at the golf resort, but with the shuttle bus only running once an hour, it was not convenient. We didn’t expect a lot from the Tavern, given it’s pitched as more of a family friendly pub, but even then we were disappointed. The food was extortionately priced (£22 for two overcooked lamb kebabs served on a wrap, with some sliced tomato and lettuce) and despite sitting at the bar for a portion of the evening, we were charged service on every single round. Breakfast was overall good with good quality food. We arrived around 7.45am and it was quiet. On taking our seats, we were told the breakfast was buffet only, however we noticed tables arriving after us being offered a menu for a made to order breakfast - we were disappointed to not have been made aware of this option ourselves. Finally, later that morning we decided to take a chance on the thermal spa experience despite being warned of “temperature issues” and an imminent closure in the coming months. I’d go as far to say that the spa should not be open in its current state, let alone charging people full price. There was construction work by the pool with exposed wires, none of the showers in the upstairs spa worked (meaning people weren’t rinsing off between rooms and pools), the infra-red room was closed and the infinity pool was cold making it difficult to endure for longer than a few minutes. Despite these negatives, we found the staff to be very friendly and polite. Additionally, although the normal Contemporary room didn’t have a bath it was still a lovely room. Ultimately, if we hadn’t have been fortunate enough to receive a significant room upgrade I would likely feel a lot more let down with our overall experience. If we had arrived with four-star expectations and paid a four-star price, we would have been somewhat content with our stay, however in its current state Cameron House is nowhere near five-star standard.

Very disappointing.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

Very disappointing. We had a 6 hour drive to the hotel and high expectations. We booked a room with a nice big bath in a separate room for the wifey. When we arrived we discovered “No bath”. When we spoke to reception the informed us that the room we chose didn’t have a bath despite the Expedia description clearly detailing a bath! We arrived on a Sunday at 17:00 and pretty hungry. We popped to the onsite pub for food only to find it filled with an overwhelming smell of fish. We decided to sit in the reception bar for a drink. 2 x Aperol spritz and 2 x Guinness = over £40 including a 12.5% service charge. One of the main reasons for booking the hotel was the world famous whiskey bar! We headed there with empty stomachs for a night cap - the whiskey bar is closed between Sunday and Tuesday!!! We returned to the onsite pub which TBF smelled a lot better. Burger and chips, a bowl of Pasta, 2 x Guinness and 2 G&T = £87!!! I can honestly say the food was at a Wetherspoons standard and that’s not me being insulting. Breakfast the next morning was very good. We went for a walk around the lake which was stunning and said we will go back to the “onsite” spa for a swim and sauna. We were told that the Spa was 2 miles away and it would be £39 each for a swim and sauna! We used the onsite pool and sauna but it had several very noisy children screaming and shouting which was a shame! I checked the reviews for the onsite pub and they were very poor indeed which was a real surprise as the reviews for the hotel were really high. The reviews for the grill bar were good so we headed their for dinner - “It was closed”! What the hell is going on here. The hotel is lovely, the staff were very good. The whiskey bar and grill being closed was unacceptable! Some of the regulars claimed that the hotel had a recent exodus of staff and that was the issue! Either way the whole experience was really disappointing! Moan over!

Elegant stay with great dining and a good spa at Cameron House

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Cameron House on Loch Lomond is a stunning hotel, offering a luxurious stay with great dining. From the moment we arrived, valet parking added a nice touch of convenience. We dined at The Cameron Grill restaurant a couple of times, and it was fantastic. The steaks, seafood, and overall menu were all excellent—truly some of the best food we’ve had during our trip. We also tried the Italian restaurant, which was good, though not as impressive as The Grill. We paid for the spa experience, which included a short transfer to the golf club. The spa itself is spread over multiple levels and is very nice, but it could certainly use some TLC and an update in some areas. Despite that, we enjoyed our time there. There are also plenty of activities around the hotel, such as seaplane rides and boat tours, though unfortunately, we couldn’t take the boat tour due to bad weather. The only downside to our stay was the slow drinks service in the bar, which was a bit of a letdown. Aside from that, everything else was great, and overall, we had a very good stay. The combination of excellent dining, lovely facilities, and beautiful surroundings made it a memorable experience

3 star experience at 5 star prices.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Cameron House boasts 5 stars, but our experience was anything but. Our room was dark and dingy, with poor lighting and lack of basic facilities eg no mirror near a seat or plug area to dry hair or do make up. The coffee machine had to sit on the floor to reach a plug and the hankiebox had three hankies in it. The spa is in desperate need of an upgrade, lockers not working, many areas looking worse for wear and too many people at a time trying to use the facilities. Sauna was good but steam rooms were not properly steamy and hand held shower to boost steam ( lying on floor) made no difference. Thermal pool and outdoor pool were uncomfortably cold, as was the main pool. The whole area appears unserviced so floors are soaking and we noted hair all over the floor in the changing areas. Honestly, the spa isn’t even 3 stars, but 5 star price! Staff are friendly in general but service is poor. We were left with dirty plates at both our evening meal and breakfast for well over 20 minutes. Both experiences were underwhelming with staff appearing flustered. Breakfast was chaotic with big queues and dirty tables being cleared at a snails pace. While there were a range of options, we had to ask for bread basket to be refilled twice and several items in the cooked breakfast were inedible due to being deep fried. Fried eggs were undercooked and came with a large dose of cooking oil! Evening meal food was good, not great and again staff failed to clear plates or check in on guests. We waited 20 minutes for a drink order to be taken and desert was served while main course plates were still on the table! So, to the bar for a nightcap and more disappointment. Bar staff need training, especially the manager in the bar along from The Grill. He ignores customers and takes no heed of who has been awaiting service. We were bye-passed twice while he offered service to people clearly just arriving at the bar. He didn’t once look in our direction. Tables strewn with dirty glasses wasn’t a good look either. We gave up after 15 minutes of being ignored and went back to our room. This was my first visit to Cameron House and it will definitely be my last. Having read through the reviews, going back some time, the same issues are being reported time and again with customers advised concerns will be passed on and addressed. Clearly not so! Such a shame that a beautiful building in the most picturesque setting is getting it so wrong, over and over! Having visited Turnberry, St Andrew’s Bay, Cromlix House and Gleneagles I can say with confidence Cameron House is no comparison. It is the poor relation, trading on its 5 star rating but providing a 3 star experience at best. I don’t understand how you can keep reading these reviews ( not to mention hear the complaints of customers, of whom there were several on our departure day) and not actually sort it out. The offer of a complimentary drink at the bar that we heard being offered ( where you couldn’t get served anyway) by way of a sorry is just insulting when customers have spent hundreds of pounds and feel very let down. Must do better Cameron House!

Slow and disappointing service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Spent a night here where my partner proposed to me at the loch side. The location and hotel itself are stunning, but the service really lets it down. After getting engaged, we went to the tavern and waited 20 minutes for a drink. We would’ve had more than one if the service wasn’t so slow. Went for dinner at the grill, waited half an hour after ordering a bottle of wine to be told they didn’t have it. Ordered another one, waited 10 mins for that. At the end of the meal we’d been charged for both bottles of wine. Staff seemed flustered and run off their feet. Didn’t bother using the leisure facilities as the pool was full of kids and the sauna/steam room were full to the brim. Considering how expensive it is, we didn’t feel the cost was worth it. While we still had a lovely time, this was not to do with the service received in the hotel. We’d be unlikely to return, which is a shame as it should be a place of high sentimental value for us.
