About the Hotel

Builders broke ground on the Esplanade Hotel at the turn of the 20th century with plans modeled after the great seaside resort hotels in Brighton and Blackpool, England. These days, Devonport is an idyllic beach locale in its own right: Nearby Cheltenham Beach is considered one of Auckland’s best, and the shopping strip along Victoria Road hosts an eclectic mix of restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. Esplanade Hotel’s 17 rooms and suites are characterized by their Edwardian architecture – think high ceilings and sash windows – and its newly revamped dining venue attracts a steady stream of locals.

Reviews for Esplanade Hotel

Ridiculous prices for the standard of accommodation

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 months ago

This is a ⅔ star hotel charging 5 star room rates. It could be a lovely place, but almost everything is in need of a serious renovation. It has a great position opposite the ferry terminal and wharf, but is very sad and tired. On the plus side, however, every member of staff that we encountered was very friendly and helpful.

Heavily unpleasant, would NOT recommend. Stay somewhere else and just walk the halls for the history.

My lovely Husband booked us this hotel thinking it would be a wonderful and relaxing stay.. Golly was it NOT.. Between ants crawling in the bed and lack of good Wi-Fi OR proper service... I wouldn't rate it a 1.. The building and history is lovely and so profound. But whoever they have "running it" isn't doing their job. Very disappointing... Do NOT recommend. They charged us 80 for "half a day" check out is at 10am.. We get ready to walk the town and find out we only paid for 2 hours..... The guy they have working at night didn't tell us it would be an extra 180, he just urged us to use the only storage room they had, that didn't lock... We will NOT be staying here again. However Nick our shuttle guy was spot on. 👌 Hands down worst stay.. But, we made the most of it regardless. The art gally on the warf was nice and we got a nap in.

Best located hotel in Devonport

The hotel is in a heritage building in the most dominant location at Devonport harbor and ferry pier. The rooms facing the sea are OK, the rooms to the backyard are small without view. The biggerst advantage of this hotel is its location to have the ferry right in front of the hotel to reach the center of Auckland in 12 minutes.

Great location only. ‘Very tired’, not clean, poor service. This historic building could be wonderful, but sadly it is not. There is no lobby, but instead just tables set up for dining with curtains hiding the rooms at night with notices of alarms!! We never saw anyone eat there. We were all told we were given an ‘upgrade’, but one couple had to turn into the bathroom from the entrance to get into the bedroom. Wicker furniture is dirty and so is the carpet. Everything needs painting. Someone needs to renovate this historic building.

Charges big money for nothing!

Booked a room from the states and then canceled. Received a prompt reply via email from Esplanade reservations confirming cancelation. Didnt give Esplanade or the fact that they had access to my credit card in Dec 2022, another thought. Doing my 2023 taxes and noticed an 800. NZ charge on my credit card in February 2023. Contacted hotel, sent all correspondence. They see and agree with all cancelation information and charges. Because it has been 6 months they refuse to return money. Very dishonest business!
