From its exterior of hand-made bricks to its beautifully timber-lined rooms, The Hotel Britomart does detail like nobody else. Plus, the best of downtown waterfront Auckland is just outside your front door. Still, calm and lined in timber, our 99 rooms are beautifully designed retreats from the buzz of the city outside – while our highly crafted Landing Suites are the last word in next-level escapism.

Below par at this price point. Service standard does not match this overhyped boutique experience. 1. Couldn’t locate reservation at check in 2. Group of 5 staff standing around in reception at 6.30am watched my son and I struggle with luggage. Not one offer to have bags taken to room. 3. Stood at breakfast 3 mornings in a row with no acknowledgement from anyone, had to ask twice to be seated. Same guy asked every morning if we were hotel guests 4. Crazy system holding accommodation charge on credit card simultaneously with actual charge on checkout. I checked out yesterday. Charge is still over $6,000 on credit card today. Called the hotel and was met with a lecture on New Zealand banking. Underwhelming.

Lovely clean and comfortable room with great showers and furnishings. Staff very helpful and welcoming. Great view from the room. Location very central and close walking to the train station, shops and restaurants. Would stay here again.

We chose Hotel Britomart because of access to the train and the central city. It was a 5 star treat and the sustainability effort 100%.

We booked a Central Auckland Hotel to attend a concert. The hotel Britomart appeared to fulfil all the criteria that we were looking for. This was an expensive Central Auckland Hotel but failed to live up to expectations. It is dark with small claustrophobic rooms difficult to move around in and very badly set up. We were also directed, prior to our arrival, to an external website to organise car parking which we did. Our car was taken from us, courteously, when we arrived but we were then charged over and above what we had already paid for car parking and told that this wasn’t included. We will have to try and sort this out but I suspect we will be left out of pocket. The restaurant is dark and unappealing. The hotel is dark and unappealing. It’s eCredential’s are irrelevant, given that climate change is a scam, what we paid and what we got. There are other, more appealing, better options in the middle of Auckland and I certainly wouldn’t be visiting again.

The positives: Extremely well located to the city and ferry. Lots of great places to eat within easy walking distance. Walking around Britomart is lovely at night as it's lit up with fairy lights. The Hotel Britomart is very attractive inside and out. Staff members are all very friendly, acknowledging us when we entered and exited the hotel. The library is a nice space exclusive to guests, where we enjoyed delicious cocktails/mocktails. Rooms are very compact but very cleverly designed to maximise space. Rooms are equipped with both shade blinds and black out blinds. Good quality coffee capsules and tea bags are provided. The bathroom was not too small and well laid out. The negatives: The rooms are a bit squishy. Only one person can move around the room at a time e.g. to make a hot drink the wardrobe door needs to be open which means that no one else can get past. More sugar would be appreciated - some of us have a sweet tooth and don't want to go to the trouble of calling up for more. Providing fresh milk in a mini milk bottle is a nice touch but unfortunately the one in our fridge was partly used and the use-by date was the same day. The lighting in the bathroom was very dim so hard to do make up. Also, the light controls were fiddly - conventional switches would have been much easier to navigate. Our (standard) room had a clear view of other internal areas of the hotel, e.g. the library and what looked like a meeting room, and vice versa - had to wear the robes provided at all times (see photo). If you're thinking of staying here consider paying extra for a better room if it's within your budget (it wasn't in ours).
