About the Hotel

The bungalows at Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa are carved from indigenous timber and adorned with Balinese artwork, fully immersed in the natural beauty and spiritual energy that defines Ubud. The hotel was built in 1928 for guests of Prince Ubud, and in the 1930s, the area became an artist colony, attracting its most illustrious resident, the German primitive painter Walter Spies. Spies’s two-story bungalow, restored to its historical splendor and available for retreats, presides over a lotus pond in the middle of the Balinese rainforest, where a meditative state is as easy to obtain as a breath of fresh air.

Fabulous stay

Fabulous historic hotel with very attentive staff. We enjoyed our entire stay and wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel is situated within a short drive to the markets. We ate at the restaurant for every meal and the food was delicious, fast and the drinks were top notch.

It was amazing, the service was a 10/10 and the room view was a paradise!!! The food is really good and the spa and swimmingpool was also amazing. I would recommend this hotel to everyone staying in Ubud. It really felt like a dream. Thank you so much <3

Fabulous Hotel

Hotel Tjampuhan is a truly wonderful place. Set in tranquil gardens with beautiful koi and lotus ponds the rooms are quiet and cool, offering a pleasant respite from the heat. The restaurant is good and the substantial breakfasts set one up well for a day exploring the local attractions. The pools are well set in the gardens and quiet and relaxing. The Spa facilities are fantastic. There is no shortage of beautiful views and fabulous architecture. It is truly a beautiful hotel. The staff are courteous and friendly. We highly recommend staying here, it’s a great experience.

Nice rooms and surrounds

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We’ve decided that although this place is lovely we probably won’t return. Yes the hotel is in a magnificent location on the side of a hill above a raging river (March). The rooms were immaculate and it’s the first nice clean bath we’ve seen in Bali for some time. There are stairs everywhere which is ok for us but we saw many elderly people struggling. The 2 pools were both quite average with many tiles missing from one of them, leaving sharp edges here and there. The buffet breakfast was a highlight but on our 1st day of the “free lunch” we had a choice of very overcooked tuna or a chicken dish. That was it. We both noticed that although the staff were typically Balinese smiling and happy, they didn’t seem genuinely happy. It was like they were being monitored and told how to interact with guests. One thing we love about Bali is when staff are relaxed and free to laugh and chat with us. Did not happen once here. Overall… lots of good points but lots of downsides too.
