About the Hotel

Embraced by Canggu Beach, whispering rice fields, a quaint fishing village and the Batu Balong Temple, Hotel Tugu Bali is a sanctuary unlike any you may have encountered before. This exclusive retreat on the southwest shore of Bali was built on one man's passion for the romantic art, history and the cultures of Bali and Java. It is the island's first boutique museum hotel, and its handsome touches include nearly 1,000 exquisite antiques. You are sure to be enchanted as you dine in an 18th-century Kang Xi-period temple, or sleep in a traditional Balinese-style pavilion that drifts above its own lotus pond.

Reviews for Hotel Tugu Bali

Mixed feelings... needs some attention and night time noise pollution is terrible

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

I was here on my own recently for 5 nights. It is a lovely hotel and setting. On the one hand, it feels quite peaceful and serene in this crazy street of noise and hubbub. However, what really spoiled it for me is that the noise really carries at night. There is a beach club across the road which plays music until the last people go home. I went out of high season, yet most nights I could hear this awful door-doof music until at least 2 am or later. I am a good sleeper, so for me to say this, it was truly terrible. Then there are other places around and about that also carry on until late, especially at weekends. So you are stuck. The reception and entrance are truly lovely. The staff are welcoming and cannot do enough to help. It feels really Balinese. The pool is lovely, if a bit small. I loved taking my breakfast on the roof top and watching the sunset there every evening. The breakfast was a bit of a hit and miss - service up to the rooftop could be quite slow. But the Ji restaurant which is up there is one of the best Canggu has to offer, so to have it onsite is fantastic. I did a cookery glass with Desi and this was at an outdoor kitchen in the garden. It was delicious. I had a choice of dishes which they sent to me in advance. I was then able to have the leftovers as dinner in the hotel restaurant. This was just a great day. Now, the rooms. I had one of the upstairs rooms so it didn't have its own private pool, but it did have this wonderful massive bath on this covered over outdoor area. I loved that. The bed was a four poster but so high I had to have a stool to climb up which was a bit of a pain in the middle of the night. The whole thing could undoubtedly benefit from a refurb. The outdoor balcony area had windows all around which didn't fit properly and might have been contributing to the noise at night. Ditto for the main room windows and doors. The wash basin area was very basic and the tiling, plumbing and electrics are all a mix of old and a bit updated. The shower had a fabulous recess at the back with a sculpture in it. This could have been so much more though because you could get through this gap into a secret room beyond but with just a chair and nothing else there. The stairs up to my room were rickety and shaky and I was so glad that someone else carried my bag up! Finally, people have all mentioned a gift supplied at check out. I didn't get one :-( Maybe they didn't like me (I'm joking) but I do feel a bit left out. I would come back but I do have mixed feelings as I would love to have given 5 stars but it's not quite there. Think refurb. Think some noise control. Then it would be 5 stars.

Exceptional and beatiful

This s a fabulous hotel in the heart of Canggu. The town itself is busy, but the hotel is an oasis of calm. The rooms are lovely, the service is out of this world (special mention to Diahyu for her friendliness!), and the food is lovely. I really can't recommend this hotel enough. It is sensational.

Best hidden gem

My daughter and I stayed at this beautiful hotel and absolutely loved it here. The staff were so kind and extremely accommodating. It was clean, our villa large and lovely and overall was a quiet oasis in busy Canggu. I would highly recommend this hotel if you were heading that way! I feel lucky to have discovered it actually. Perfect location too.

Privilege

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I remember when this was all rice fields.... but that's another story... The Tugu is the most - the only - truly Balinese hotel in Canggu. Packed full of Indonesian antiques and artifacts, with the style of a Balinese palace, gracious rooms make you feel immediately privileged to be a part of this wonderful building's history. The grace of the suites is beyond comparison to anywhere else in Canggu (and we've stayed in a couple, when Canggu was just becoming accessible to tourists). It is Real Old Bali, a phrase that makes me reach for my credit card. Canggu itself is galloping through the southern half of the island, putting concrete over the fields that make you want to come to Bali in the first place, new buildings stretching way above the coconut palms that used to the the limit of the height allowed for any roof. The good part of this is that it's bringing work and prosperity to many families in Bali: there are some splendid restaurants and coffee shops now (where there used to be ploughs and herding ducks). The bad part is that if you want to see the buffalo and and the ducks, you'd better head to Lombok. Or Flores. Because Bali doesn't really have them any more. Do we as tourists have a right to expect Bali to stay in its David Attenborough black and white world, or should we embrace the change? It's a difficult question and one which the Tugu Hotel answers. Here, you can have your heritage and your history, your grace and your karmic peace. But you can still get a blooming good flat white round the corner.

Beautiful Birthday in Tugu Bali

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

This hotel is beautiful and the staff can not do enough to make you happy. Every interaction was accompanied by a smile, and well wishes for your day out or evening in. I had my 40th birthday here and woke up to the staff singing with flowers and a delightful breakfast. Our suite was just perfect, and the little things like evening poetry that was left on our bed each evening were a great touch. In the afternoon you can go to the pool and enjoy tea and cakes while chilling. The location is great because in the morning you can go up to the balcony for breakfast and watch people surfing on the beach and in the evening you can hit the bars which are right outside. I enjoyed my stay and was sad to leave. Thank you for having me, Tugu Bali, and for all your efforts to make my stay so enjoyable.

I feel privileged and blessed to have had the opportunity to experience Hotel Tugu Bail. It surpassed my dreams, my hopes and my idea of the perfect vacation. Beyond perfect! I don't think I'll ever encounter anything as exquisitely beautiful as the Hotel Tugu Bali experience. The staff is the best of the best!

For several decades we have been going to Bali. In all that time we have never experienced such a wonderful domain like this magical place. Yes, of course the dining, the artwork, the amenities, the accommodations, the kind and constant attention. But more, much more, is the overwhelming sense that this is a most spiritually blessed & balanced place, a place of tranquility and peace.

Simply the best of Bali.

My family would like to say a very special "Thank you" for your kind hospitality & friendliness during our almost week long stay in Tugu-Bali! Your hotel is truly unique - a wonderful museum of Balinese history & culture. The Balinese food is as beautiful and diverse as the artwork and furniture in the hotel. Our romantic dinner in the Bale Puputan, Royal Balinese dining room will be remembered forever! Le Mayeur Suite was a palace for a king & queen! However, the beauty of the buildings, the wonderful gardens & lily pond were all brought alive by the people too! The Tugu staff who were always smiling, always pleasant & always willing to serve! A magnificent holiday! We will always be truly grateful & have these wonderful memories with us!

What a wonderful, wonderful hotel you are. In fact, you are more than a hotel, by far. You gave us five days of incomparable charm, with peace and contentment as our healing balm, that left our hearts full of love for you all.

Thank you for having been able to spend five marvelous days at Tugu Bali. The first impression arriving at the hotel was over whelming! The generous entrance hall is impressive. The reception of your staff was a new experience for us and is a mirror of the excellent atmosphere and service. Instead of just standing at an anonymous reception desk waiting for check-in we were asked to sit down in a comfortable chair, were offered a drink, while friendly ladies did the formalities for us, Extraordinary! We spent our holidays in harmony with Balinese culture and its beautiful island.
