This was my sister’s Birthday present from me after she had a horrible time recovering from another operation. I couldn’t fault the experience and this excellent hotel in picturesque and historic Bath. We had a spa package which is one of the best ones I’ve experienced and we’ve been world wide! I think this one suited a more relaxed experience. The spa area is smaller but the ambiance is perfect. I felt like we were swimming in the Roman Baths back in the day! The hotel has a cosy, old world charm and the staff are absolutely wonderful. Just the best at putting you at your ease and being friendly - no 5 star snobbery here! But this hotel is worth every one of its 5 stars and is expert at providing exceptional service for their guests. We will return!

Pros This hotel is located in a segment of the Bath Crescent which is a marvel of architecture. The breakfast is copious and offers excellent food and service . The concierges are friendly and efficient, the WiFi is fast. Cons Unfortunately this is where the good news end. This is a high end expensive hotel. At the outset no one greets you , you have to discover the lone desk near the elevator that serves as front desk. The rather uninterested lady there told us that our room wasn't ready and wouldn't be ready for at least three hours. She showed us the lovely back garden and indicated that the breakfast would take place in a different building at the back of it. Waiting for our room we visited Bath and returned in late afternoon to be shown to our room by a different, much friendlier front desk attendant. We had a so called Heritage room ( more expensive). It was large and on the top floor but there was only a small window with a view towards the crescent totally obstructed by the stone balcony lining the roof of the building. As a result the room was very dark with few lamps. In the bathroom the shower was of the dreaded over the bathtub variety and we were informed that most of the bathrooms in the hotel did not have wails in showers. To make coffee there was a contraption pushing the coffee grounds with a lever after pouring water from a separate hot water kettle. We promptly found out that the kettle cord was too short, we also asked for a set of additional pillows as well as an additional lamp. As we were leaving for dinner a crew sowed up with a lamp, a radiator ( the room was too cold) and clamps to help us stand in the shower as well as an extension cord for the kettle. When we returned we found the room pleasantly warm and better lit. The clamps were on the wall of the shower, someone decided to clean the coffee making pot by pouring its contents in the toilet and forgetting to flush it .The coffee grinds made the water in the toilet totally black. As to the additional pillows they never showed up. During the night one of the shower wall clamps detached itself from the wall. In the end the shower did not provide really hot water and the toilet had to be flushed repeatedly to work properly while the wash basin had a slow drain. This was indeed a Fawlty Towers experience.

Our stay began with a call to the hotel telling them were arriving ahead of schedule and could we check in early and park the car. Mark came out to greet us by name and the charming girl on reception- I think Reya welcomed us like royalty. We were shown into the cozy lounge and our room was ready within 10 minutes. Alfie’s ( named after the cat) lounge has complimentary drinks and snacks and the bar was open too. The hotel has service that is second to none and the staff are the jewel in this beautiful crown. The room had top end Jo Loves toiletries and the pillow spray was most welcome. The spa although small was clean and well maintained and the restaurant was first class. We were given afternoon tea as a gift and that too was superb. Chef Martin Blake serves delicious and inventive food and I am sure he will deserve a Michelin star one day very soon. The hotel is a short walk into town and we didn’t use our car until we checked out. Bath centre is almost completely pedestrianised but Mark and the team will arrange a taxi into town if needed. The valet parking is included in the tariff if you book direct with the hotel which is a nice touch. We loved our few days in Bath and will definitely return

We came for my birthday dinner, with my elderly Mum, and had a fabulous evening. From the welcome, and help with parking at the front door, through to the kind and attentive service in the restaurant at dinner. We ate from the A la carte menu and all the dishes and wine choices were superb. Subtle and thoughtful blending of flavours made each course a delight.
