Reviews for Domes Zeen Chania

Not the best location

When we were booking Domes Zeen Chania, my wife and I couldn't find much about the walk into Chania Old Town, so after staying there I wanted to share our experience for anyone in the same position. The resort is built on a steep hill, with reception and car park at the top, the pool and main facilities down at the bottom. We were happy enough climbing the steps between levels, but most other guests seemed to prefer waiting for the golf buggies! The walk to Chania harbour took us about 35 minutes each way. There are two ways to go: the main road near the top of the resort, or a dirt track along the beach from the bottom. We chose the beach route into town — it's a mixed bag, once past the beach there‘s a fairly unremarkable built-up area before opening up at Nea Chora Beach and giving way to a much more enjoyable approach to the harbour. The beach path after dark is unlit. On the one occasion we tried it on the way back, we came across some drunk homeless men lurking just past the last street light, and we didn't feel comfortable at all. The main road is a much better bet for the return journey, though do be aware it finishes with an unlit, unpaved lane leading up to the resort entrance. If you're thinking of using the bus — which seemed to run quite frequently — you'll still need to tackle that same lane to reach the stops. We still enjoyed the walk there and back, and it certainly helps all that delicious Greek food go down. The main Pool area looked nice, although for me personally it was uninviting, half the sun beds sat on shingle and all had fixed umbrellas so not the best for a sun tan. There were also a lot of kids in the main pool.

Lovely personalised service but look at what you want

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

First time ima. luxury collection despite being a Marriott Platinum elite member. Mixed bag of feelings. Check in experience fantastic. Personal attention out of the ordinary. Rooms and house keeping leave a massive scope for improvement. The approach is narrow and looks like where are we. The parking or lack of it does not leave a great impression. However, the checking experience was very good. One observation, very personal but I felt the hostess uniform appeared like a night PJ. The view from the reception fantastic. The room we chose was basic for a property of this standard in terms of this level of pricing. The toilet was small and I don’t think space is a constraint. We were 4 of us in the room and I think the room could be bigger for sure. The hope was to get upgraded as a Platinum elite subject to availability that usually happens. The resort was full and that showed in the softer aspects. House keeping was delayed and when you call for a buggy you need to be prepared for a 10-15 mins wait.while we were here the gym was an open air one and basic. Sophia told us that the indoor one is opening in 10 days time. I would have imagined that the facilities here would have been superb like a property gym and a steam and sauna. The excellent bit about this property was the personalised attention, especially kudos to Theodore, who tried to go out of the way to accommodate whatever we wanted. In the end, the last day of our stay we managed to get the upgrade. A 2 bedroom wasn’t available but we got a room with an ocean view. Since we are vegetarians, the Beach house restaurant prepared a vegetarian menu for us and the food was outstanding. The breakfast spread was very good and the staff there fantastic. Sophia, made us have the fresh herbs and capsicum from the garden and it was the best capsicum we have had. Theodore and the team arranged a spa for us as well. Few areas where we feel the property could improve given the price tag. Housekeeping, the attention to detail would help, if they are doing up the room they would be better placed to top up things which have been used and be more detailed. Turnaround times could be better. Room sizes definitely could be better and the toilets need to be bigger. My first Luxury collection experience but maybe not the price I would wish to pay. Maybe the proposition is different for different people. Personalised service for sure.. location is pretty decent if you driving.

The Worst WORST Luxury Collection Stay I Have Ever Experienced — A Complete Letdown for My Birthday

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

The Worst Luxury Collection Stay I Have Ever Experienced — A Complete Letdown for My Birthday My husband and I chose this resort to treat ourselves for my birthday, and it turned out to be an overpriced and thoroughly disappointing decision. Having traveled to over 48 countries and stayed in more than 500 properties, I have a well-calibrated understanding of what five-star service actually looks like. Domes Noruz Chania does not meet that standard, and it falls well short of what the Marriott Luxury Collection name is supposed to represent. The property is dated, visibly under-maintained, and in clear need of investment — both in the physical space and in staff training. Below is the precise, factual list of failures we experienced during our stay this week in mid-June. Each of these happened more than once, which rules out the possibility of a one-off mistake. Room Maintenance The neglect was apparent from the moment we settled in. The towel rail in our bathroom was broken for the entirety of our stay and was never repaired, despite being a simple fix that any well-run property would have addressed within hours. Inconsistent Housekeeping On day 2 and day 4, housekeeping failed to leave drinking water in our room — a basic standard at any hotel, let alone a luxury one — forcing us to call repeatedly just to get it sorted. From day 2 through day 5, four consecutive days, our face towels were never replenished. This was not an oversight; it was a pattern. Appalling Treatment on My Birthday On the morning of my birthday, I sat down for breakfast at a poolside table. Within a minute, it was clear the table was sitting in direct sun and was uncomfortably hot, so I looked around, saw fifteen empty, unoccupied tables, and moved to one. A waitress named Liliana approached and told me, in no uncertain terms, that I was not allowed to do this. She claimed breakfast was fully booked and that a long queue of guests was waiting. This was simply false — there were two couples waiting and fifteen tables sitting completely empty in plain view. This was a casual buffet service, not a fine-dining restaurant with assigned seating. In all my years of travel, I have never once been reprimanded for moving to an unoccupied table. Liliana’s tone was sharp and unapologetic, and the encounter left me so shaken that I broke down in tears at my own birthday breakfast. Maria and Manolis, the food and beverage manager, did follow up with an apology — a gesture I appreciated — but it could not undo a moment that should never have happened in the first place. Bizarre, Cheap Amenities Turndown service on our first night included a thoughtful box of loukoumi. On nights 2, 3, and 4, that standard quietly disappeared, replaced with cheap, leftover Christmas-branded Lacta chocolate — stock plainly held over from the prior holiday season, with an expiry date of October 2026. Serving guests discounted festive leftovers in the middle of June is not a small detail. It signals a property cutting costs precisely where guests are least likely to notice, and it has no place at a hotel charging luxury rates. Last Day Breakfast Neglect On our final morning, we were seated once again in Liliana’s section. This time, we were not approached at all — no coffee, no orange juice, no acknowledgment whatsoever, despite this being offered without fail on every prior morning of our stay. Given the earlier incident, this felt less like an isolated lapse and more like a deliberate cooling of service. Broken Promises at Check-Out At check-out, I gave the hotel a fair and direct opportunity to make things right. I laid out every one of these issues in detail to Natalia, the Rooms Division Manager. She apologized, offered us a return stay so the resort could demonstrate improved service, and promised to credit 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to my account immediately. As of writing this review, several days later, those points have still not arrived. A promise made at check-out should not require a guest to chase it down afterward. Overall This stands as the worst Marriott property experience I have had in years of staying at hotels across the world. It was an expensive mistake dressed up in a luxury label, and I would strongly advise other travelers — particularly those booking for a special occasion — to look elsewhere.

Hospitality with a capital "H"

We stayed at this property in a Tropical Pavilion room with private pool. The room was spacious, quiet, and beautifully appointed. The bathroom is lovely, great water pressure, lots of room. There are plenty of thoughtful amenities. I cannot say enough about the housekeeping staff who work round the clock to stock, clean and maintain this pristine resort. They are second to none! The front desk team is professional, capable, warm, efficient at taking care of any request. The food and beverage is fantastic. The breakfast buffet is sumptuous and beautifully presented. We enjoyed lunch and dinner on property - both times, the service was spot on and the food was delicious. This is a family friendly resorts - and that is evident by the number of small children on property. There is a kids club, but families tend to spend most of their time around the main pool. The beach area was perfect for us as a couple seeking a quiet retreat. Great for swimming and serviced by the friendly bar team, it was a nice little escape from the tiny guests at the pool! We didn't use the fitness center - it's an outdoor gym. Instead we took the ocean front trail into town. The two stand out staff who went over and above to make our stay were Theodore (Haute Living) and Anastasia. The care and attention they extended to make sure we would have a memorable stay was extraordinary. We would return to this property and would recommend it - the main reason is the staff. Trust your holiday to their capable hands. We loved it!

Perfect first holiday

We had a fantastic stay at Domes Zeen Chania and would return in a heartbeat. The only issue we experienced was with our room, but it was resolved quickly by a genuinely caring, attentive team who clearly take pride in looking after their guests. What impressed us most was how the hotel manages to be incredibly family-friendly while still feeling like a stylish adults-only retreat. The design, atmosphere and overall aesthetic are exceptional, creating a calm and luxurious environment without compromising on family needs. Breakfast was a highlight each morning, with high-quality food served in a beautiful setting. The reception team were outstanding throughout our stay, helping with everything from restaurant reservations and taxi bookings to arranging buggies back to our room. We were travelling with our 8-month-old daughter on her first holiday, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure she was happy and well looked after. Their warmth and attention to detail made a real difference to our experience. The hotel is also within walking distance of Chania's old and new towns. The path is a little rough in places, but it's manageable with a pram and well worth the walk. A beautiful hotel with exceptional service, thoughtful staff and a wonderful atmosphere. We can't wait to come back. Thanks again to all the amazing staff, too many to mention by name!
