About the Hotel

You might have to elicit the help of a local to find Hospes Palacio del Bailio – it’s hidden on a narrow, residential street that’s walking distance from Córdoba’s sights, but isolated enough to cultivate a dreamy, time-traveler’s fantasy. Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, the former palace is one of the city’s architectural jewels. As a hotel, it retains its historic bones – think stone arches, vaulted ceilings and intricately carved wooden doors – and adds modernist touches, such as the dark gray Sierra Elvira marble that encloses the bathrooms. In the courtyard, Roman columns frame a fantastic swimming pool.

Beautiful hotel and architecture.

Beautiful hotel, very good customer service and great restaurant. We had a lovely stay here on Christmas Eve. Probably better to go when pool is open. The one thing that bothered me was the room wasn’t as clean as I would expect for a hotel of this quality and cost. Floor not very clean.

Some charm, but I had a bad room

There aren’t many luxury options in Cordoba. It’s not a major city like Madrid, Barcelona or Seville, so perhaps to be expected, but it gets a fair share of American, South American and Asian tourists, in addition to the hordes of Europeans, so it’s rather underserved in that respect. The big draw here is the Alcazar Mosque-Cathedral, but there’s also the charming winding streets of town, with the Roman Bridge and the Alcazar gardens and this makes Cordoba worth at least a one or two night stay. I came by train to Cordoba from Seville and the taxi driver had no clue where the hotel was (there’s no Uber in Cordoba). After some broken Spanglish, we finally worked it out and arrived to a peaceful courtyard. The public areas of the hotel are lovely. Moorish with a contemporary edge - gilt shell chandeliers, squared off sofas - and the occasional antique. Sadly, my room was little more than a dungeon. I was booked into the Dreamers room and it was a huge mistake as I was given probably the worst one. Dark, dingy, poorly maintained, on the ground floor facing a side street, the only redeeming feature of it was the ancient arches of the former Roman villa. The bedcover was cheap and nasty, like something you’d find at a Matalan sale. Just absolutely bizarre to me the hotel had a “design” headboard with matching bedcover. With these surroundings, if you want to make it work in a very dark room, you just have everything plain white - that would show off the Roman arches to their best effect. I ate dinner once in the hotel on my second night. It was adequate, but after the splendours of having a lovely tasting menu at the Casa de Manolete (recommended) the night before, it struggled to be memorable for me. The one feature I really loved was the old Roman baths in the basement. You have to book, but it’s very atmospheric and romantic. I was alone, so a bit of a waste, but still enjoyable.

Very nice boutique hotel with potential to be truly outstanding.

Lovely hotel, centrally located for sightseeing on foot. A really beautiful building with enormous potential set over an ancient Roman villa and thermal hot spring. The rooms are comfortable although slightly lacking in terms of the decor relative to other similarly priced hotels. It would not take much to make them really luxurious and for this hotel to be truly exceptional. It just needs someone with a discerning eye. The food both at breakfast and in the a la carte restaurant was excellent and the staff both helpful and friendly.

a palace we call home

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

we have stayed at hospes palacio del bailio a dozen or more times during 13 years of traveling to cordoba, and we always look forward to our next stay- this historical site and its surrounding buildings are at the heart and soul of ancient cordoba culture. there are visible roman ruins upon which the palace was later built. the restoration of the palace to hotel is brilliant and gives the experience of staying here an abiding sense of place and time. in addition, there is the welcoming and multi-lingual staff, the elegant and comfortable rooms, the excellent chef and menus, the bodyna spa with roman baths and the list goes on. the hotel takes whatever time and attention is needed to provide the guests--be they travelers, tourists, or locals-- with an ambiance both warm and friendly. highly recommend !!

Oasis in Cordoba

Amazing oasis in the middle of Cordoba! Fabulous staff and restaurant . The Roman ruins underneath the glass restaurant floor were spectacular. The Roman bath was an added bonus. Will definitely be back!
