Hotel Endsleigh is a Grade I historic house set in 100 acres of fairytale woodland, follies and grottos created by Humphry Repton. The Duke of Bedford, who owned a third of Devon, chose this spot for his fishing and hunting lodge. Hidden on the edge of the Dartmoor, many of the 18 bedrooms have magnificent views of the gardens, the river Tamar and beyond into Cornwall. There is no muzak whatsoever at Endsleigh only the birds singing and the bats squeaking.

We have been visiting Hotel Endsleigh for over 20 years and have wonderful memories of the generous and tasty afternoon teas - such lovely egg sandwiches - cucumber fingers - tasty cakes and jelly desserts for the grandchildren of bygone times. Alas - no more - the latest offering is SO disappointing and a far cry from our fond memories of excellence. The sandwiches have been reduced to only two (no egg or cucumber) - the scones are not particularly nice and the cakes are fiddly and contrived - not an English afternoon tea by any stretch. Asking over £40 (with service charge) - is stretching customer loyalty too far. We will not be returning.

We attended a superb dinner along with a talk from Alex Polizzi which was highly informative and entertaining. The team at Endsleigh were excellent and highly attentive and Alex was a brilliant host. We will definitely attend other events that are held at Endsleigh

Having been to many many afternoon teas up and down the country I have to say how disappointed I was with the afternoon tea here. I came with my daughter who lives in London. Two finger sandwiches Barely half a sausage roll Two very small savoury snacks Two small scones were heavy hard & over cooked Small amount of jam & cream 3 again very small cakes When you consider this is £37.50pp + 12.5% discretionary service charge totalling £42 Extortionately over priced. The content does not justify the cost. Staff and service no issues however, unfortunately I did have the service charge removed as I was really disappointed with the food content. Needless to say I would not return or recommend.

The gardens here are wonderful. The upper part is spring and woodland. Camelias, Acers and Azaleas. The rest to the front of the house is probably more of a summer gardens. The parterre was very well planted. Our room was nice and dog friendly. The staff were very friendly. The place is laid back. Food is slightly old fashioned and a bit over rich/ over complicated for my taste.

Lovely warm atmosphere, staff second to none in accessibility, friendliness and service. Room comfy, huge bed, ample clothes storage and power points, two arm chairs, speaking of which: why only one suitcase rack? (So often found in double rooms. We asked for another. Ditto room keys). Also requested a sheet of writing paper not provided in room. No tissues beside bed (provided in bathroom only). Open windows rattled through the night to the extent of needing to be closed. Huge bath, filled quickly with copious amounts of hot water, Food: excellent… IF you like rich platters for every course with numerous flavours injected via seeds, berries, sorbets, and goodness knows what else. We had to ask what we were eating, being at a loss to identify! Could the haute cuisine envelop simpler, less mysterious dishes which are equally delicious? Puddings were so very rich and creamy every evening (though looked like works of art) that my husband had to opt for cheese every time. THAT ASIDE, we thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay and the pointers given here are only offered in the spirit of usefulness rather than as overt criticism. We have recommended it to friends.
