Thoughtful Luxury at Its Finest

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

From the artisanal welcome drinks to the locally-sourced toiletries, every detail showed careful consideration. The rooftop lounge offered breathtaking views and became our favorite sunset spot. The staff seemed genuinely happy to be there, which created such a positive atmosphere. The room's smart technology integration was impressive yet user-friendly.

Living Museum in the Heart of Hanoi

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Staying at Hanoi’s Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel is akin to embarking on a journey through a living, breathing museum. The grand 1901 colonial lobby, a creation of Frenchmen Gustave Émile Dumoutier and André Ducamp, immediately immerses you in a rich tapestry of history. The Metropole, a symbol of colonial elegance, has hosted a myriad of luminaries, from Charlie Chaplin to modern world leaders, making it a fascinating historical landmark. I had the pleasure of staying in the Heritage Wing, and to my delight, I was upgraded to an extraordinary suite. This wasn’t just a room; it was an expansive sanctuary featuring two guest bathrooms, multiple entrances, and interiors that oozed charm and history. The dark wood panelling and period art whispered stories of its famed guests, including Graham Greene, who wrote The Quiet American within these walls. The suite wasn’t merely luxurious; it was a historical artefact. It once served as a haven for diplomats and journalists during the Vietnam War, complete with a bomb shelter beneath its elegant exterior. During the “Christmas Bombing” of 1972, Joan Baez sought refuge here, her haunting recordings capturing the spirit of resilience in those perilous times. Guests can now take a free tour of the rediscovered bomb shelter, a chilling yet fascinating glimpse into the past. One of the most memorable aspects of my stay was the unparalleled service provided by Ms Man Hoa, affectionately known as “Flower.” Her unflappable charm and grace as my personal butler, or Majordome as the hotel elegantly calls it, was truly remarkable. From securing restaurant reservations to recommending dining options and managing a few errands, Ms Man Hoa's seamless communication via WhatsApp and her ability to anticipate my needs added a layer of personal care that truly elevated the experience. The dining experience at the hotel was a true highlight. The fine dining restaurant, where Alex provided impeccable service, offered a seamless fusion of French and Vietnamese flavours. From customising the degustation menu to serving up a steaming bowl of pho for breakfast on request, every meal was an event. The elegance of the setting and the attentiveness of the staff enhanced the dining experience, making it a truly indulgent and satisfying affair. Just across the road at the Press Club, I indulged in a pho cocktail—a spectacular mix of gin, star anise, and cinnamon, prepared with dramatic flair. It was the perfect prelude to a degustation dinner paired beautifully with a curated wine selection. As I sat with my cocktail, gazing at the Metropole’s illuminated facade, I couldn’t help but marvel at how this city weaves its history into every experience. Hanoi offers a mesmerising blend of past and present, and the Sofitel Legend Metropole stands as its crowning jewel. Highly recommended for anyone seeking luxury, history, and a truly unforgettable stay.

Enjoyable Stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Enjoyed our 3-night stay. The hotel offered a 40-min tour, including visit to their Bomb Shelter, which was a special experience. However, had to stand in the hotel lobby to listen to a long tour was too tiring. The Hotel could have arranged guests to take a seat to listen. Most employees were friendly & eager to help. Special kudo goes to Concierge, Viet, who jumped in to help when the streets around the Hotel was blocked off during weekend. He offered to talk to the Grab driver to give him specific direction to come to the Hotel to pick us up. Without him, we would have been stuck & missed our dinner appointment. Compliment also goes to the waitress in the French Restaurant. She made our dinner very enjoyable!

Luxury in Hanoi

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Sofitel Metropole offers everything that one could want. Our room ticked every box and the selection of restaurants was all that we could ask for. Breakfast at the Spice Garden was almost decadent, it was a great start to the day. Accolades to all the staff. Every person was always smiling and respectful. We were asked so many times if there was anything that we wanted, if there was anything that could be done for us.

A historical establishment trying their best to be a 5 star hotel within the limitations of their building.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We choose to stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi because it was an Hanoi Establishment, and was a 5 star hotel which was offered at a reasonable price. As it turns out, you get what you pay for. Unfortunately this hotel suffers from the limitations of is old architecture, and there is only that much they can do to refurbish the old lady to keep up in line with the modern 5 star hotel offerings. A few things were evident. There was a level up walking into the room from the hallway, it was not a flat ground, likely due to the many times the floor has been re-tiled up re-done. I was particularly unhappy with the shower over the bath situation. Clearly they have not managed to find a way to put in a walk in shower. The rooms were not huge by international standards, but were reasonable in the context of the small room sizes often found in the Old Quarters of Hanoi. The service was great, but not stellar. No one offered to pack us breakfast for an early departure. All in all, I felt that it was a worthy experience with a Hanoi establishment, and the price was fair for what you get. Certainly if I was paying more, I would be looking for a more modern hotel.
