Perched atop the cliffs at Hermanus, The Marine Hermanus is an urbane sanctuary in a secluded natural setting. This Relais & Chateaux affiliate sits along South Africa(TM)s acclaimed Whale Route, 80 miles east of Cape Town. Nothing but 3,000 miles of ocean drifts between individually decorated accommodations and the South Pole. From a body massage by the tidal pool to a local vintage from the oefloating” wine cellar, each detail at this member of The Collection by Liz McGrath indulges and enchants.

The staff were exceptional. Very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. The hotel is beautiful and the food was amazing. A wonderful experience that we will treasure. We only wish that on our trip around South Africa we couldn’t stay longer.,

It was a privilege to be a guest at this superb hotel just recently. Attention to detail was second to none. I only wish had been able to stay longer. Extra excitement at seeing whales in the bay whilst having breakfast. Bedrooms were well appointed, had all the little extras that make a stay so pleasurable. Breakfast was a great experience, well served with a great choice of food.

Perfectly located upmarket hotel in Hermanus. Location and the views from rooms facing the sea cannot be beat. Service at the front desk was impeccable and status recognition--the hotel is part of SLH--was examplary. A few minor gripes: - The windows in my room were quite old, seemed stuck, and could not be opened. Unfortunately, the windows were also quite dirty. I understand the room was directly facing the open sea, making it very difficult to keep windows clean. But this is a luxury hotel. - The door to the room could have been of a higher standard. Old lock, some light bleeding through, and, most significantly, poor noise insulation. - At one of the dining establishments, I was asked to tip in cash. Not a big deal, but I feel at a property of this category, it should be up to the customer whether she tips via cash or card. Overall, I had an excellent stay. I would return. Reason for not giving 5/5: Sure, the issues I had were minor. But this is a five-star hotel, so I hold them to a higher standard than a run-of-the-mill Marriott or Hilton.

We stayed at the Marine for 3 nights in the 3rd week of September. When we arrived it appeared that our rooms had been cancelled by our booking agent, which was obviously concerning! The General Manager remained calm and suggested we went for a bite to eat to give her chance to sort things out. When we returned a couple of hours later, not only had the problem been sorted, we had also been upgraded to fantastic sea facing suites! During our stay we dined in the restaurant once and had room service twice. The room service meals arrived quickly despite the kitchen being busy, the food was great. The meal in the restaurant was first class as was the service. Breakfast was also delightful with fantastic views over the ocean. All staff were very helpful and always had smiles on their faces. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
