Reviews for Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel

Not what we expected from the Kimpton brand

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

We had high hopes for this hotel that were the last two nights on our road trip - it didn’t meet our expectations in any way. The check in experience was poor - we arrived early, which we acknowledged, but had to ask several times for progress on whether our room was ready, even after the stated 4pm check in time. Other guests were being checked in before that time and we weren’t provided the email updates that were promised. We spoke to three different check in staff and all seemed disinterested, bordering on disdainful. When we were finally given access to our room it was an accessible (disabled) room, which was neither requested nor required. While it meant we had a good sized room, this annoys me because it means that room type isn’t available for someone who may actually need it. The room itself was well furnished, for example with a Dyson hairdryer and smart TV. But basic things like a coffee maker were absent. The minibar was (as expected) extortionately priced, but many of the products looked very old with peeling labels, like they had been there for a long time. The bed was large and comfortable. For some reason on arrival the TV wouldn’t work properly, but this resolved itself. The gym was well equipped and clean. WiFi was patchy and disconnected frequently. The resort of Huntington Beach was not as exclusive as we had been advised and we feel we made a mistake and almost ‘wasted’ the last couple of days of our trip. One of the check in staff even told us that the resort was ‘dead’ and we would have better options for food and drink further down the coast! When we booked, the information we saw said only valet parking was available. There is a self parking option behind the hotel on 6th Street but this is still super expensive - $36 overnight. We have stayed in Kimpton hotels in other US cities and always loved them, which is why we chose this one. But it didn’t live up to the premium brand expectations we had and wouldn’t return. We’ll think twice about other Kimpton hotels in the future.

Great service all around at the hotel. The check in process was great. Danny at the front desk was awesome, very helpful and help make the experience great. The hotel was very clean and nice I would highly recommend staying here. Love the atmosphere of the hotel and our room had a great view of the beach.

Great hotel at a wonderful location. Across the street from the famous HB pier and minutes walk to shopping, dining, entertainment. Very clean part of HB. Great staff especially front desk staff. Charming decor, family & pet friendly. Can’t wait to go back

Feels like Coming Home

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We cannot remember how many times we have stayed here over the years but one of the things we love is the customer service from all the staff. We just checked in and Danny helped us at the front desk. From the moment we walked up he recognized us and made checking in feel like we were returning home. We cannot recommend the Shorebreak enough. Also super excited that the Pier Summit Ski Lodge is already popped up for the season!

Wouldn’t return

Updated review. Based off all the 5 point reviews was expected more. 1st Room was small and tired- and almost zero water pressure in the shower- like a complete pathetic joke. Also the room SMELLED. The 2nd room was bigger and had a better view- but still TIRED and same exact almost ZERO water pressure in the shower. This is NOT ok. The rooms have fake “stereo players” and speakers and a big igloo cooler that all just take up a lot of needed space, I found this to be quite trite. Just not for us- personally prefer a functional, efficient room- not one cluttered with folkloric, nonsensical nonsense. Cool staff and nice Surf/Socal vibe throughout the hotel and a great location, but for me that was it. I’ve updated the review because I got a response back that the pathetic shower pressure is due to ‘California regulation’ and that they ‘wish they could boost it’ - well this is absolute nonsense. We live in Miami and spend two months a year in California hotels. This is the ONLY one that has water pressure this subpar. Perhaps you could spend some money upgrading your plumbing as opposed to blaming California regulators. We spent a few days recently at the Pendry right down the street; Justin, maybe you should you check into that hotel and take a shower and see what I’m taking about. Are they subject to different regulations than your hotel right down the street? What about your sister hotel; the Intercontinental, San Diego or the Beverly Wilshire or the Ritz-Carlton, Marina Del Rey or the Peninsula BH? - Also all under different government regs?
