Perched high above the desert capital of Jodhpur, Umaid Bhawan Palace is the last of the great palaces of India and one of the largest private residences in the world – set amidst 26 acres of lush gardens. Designed by renowned Edwardian architect Henry Lanchester, the palace is a blend of eastern and western architectural influences. Its majestic 105 – foot high cupola is influenced by the Renaissance, while the towers draw inspiration from Rajput tradition. The lavish interiors with gilt furniture and elegant artwork follow the Art Deco style, complemented by the exotic murals by the self-exiled Polish artist Stefan Norblin. In 1997, the palace was converted into a luxury hotel, and is now managed by TAJ. With this, the TAJ extends its grand luxury palace experience to the city of Jodhpur.

From the moment we drove into the Palace, we felt welcomed as royalty. The architecture and style of this Jodhpur treasure are simply beautiful. We stayed in a Heritage suite, which had generous amounts of space, privacy and comfort. We dined at Pillars for dinner and had a sensational dinner of the non-vegetarian tasting menu, which was Indian-continental. We had a nice yoga one morning with the instructor Jashina. One of the hotel managers Sikander gave us an amazing private tour of the Palace within the hotel (different from the Palace museum) and he was an absolute delight, sharing stories from the Palace’s past. Aman served us breakfasts made to order outside overlooking the lawn. One member of the Palace security team Cheftaun offered us a private tour of the upper floors around the dome to see some of the Royal family’s photos. What an experience to be a Maharaja for a few days.

From the initial greeting (think tabla-like drumming, welcoming chanting and general celebrations) to the check in in the amazing domed Rotunda you know that this is going to be something special. The room was elegant with an art-deco style, whilst the view from our room over the gardens to the pool was spectacular - like Versailles with less fountains. Sikanda Singh Bhati gave us a personal tour of the hotel and took the utmost care to ensure we had the most brilliant experience. Indeed every one of the hotel team we met smiled and ensured a relaxed flow to our stay. The view to and from the magically lit garden pavilion is stunning at night. We loved negronis in the classic colonial style Trophy Bar and then a relaxed dinner looking out to the magically-lit pavilion whilst listening to the gentle tone of a flute. We visited as part of a retirement celebration but also to celebrate my family heritage later in the trip. A sabre bearing cake cutting extravaganza added an extra theatrical touch! We took away memories to treasure of opulence beyond measure,

Parkhee was our front desk and palace tour guide. She was exceptional. Definitely recommend a visit and stay at the hotel. She was amazing at clicking our pictures in every room during the palace tour.

The palace sits atop a hill overlooking the blue city of Jodhpur. You can catch a glimpse of the palace as you roam around the outskirts of the city which is always a gasping moment. The royal welcome we got is something that will stay as a fond memory. The experience from checking in to having a personal member of staff taking us round the palace for a tour showed the great level of detail and passion the staff had to ensure we were fully settled and welcomed. The grounds are truly spectacular, where a number of peacocks roam freely. The view of the city and the fort are breathtaking. The food was nothing short of a royal banquet - the menu is vast and the staff and chefs would continually check in with us to make sure the experience was personable. The food was truly fantastic and the thali we chose gave the traditional flavour of Rajasthan of which we were already accustomed to. The room was also fantastic, large and fit for a royal experience. We were lucky enough to also visit the horse stables to meet some of the highest performing horses in the polo game. We also had fun taking part in mocktail making with a renowned mixologist, had a full body massage in the spa and found time to enjoy some afternoon tea. There are too many things to note but the experienced was truly topped by Chirag who took some of the best photos of our stay which we shall enjoy for years to come. We plan to stay again in the future, highly recommend the palace to any guest. All staff members played a big role in our stay but a special thanks to Chirag, Sikander, Sidique, Jabar, Chetan, Vikram, Chandler and all other staff that gave us the best experience. We recommend staying at the palace, there is a lot to do and also opportunities to just relax.
