A truly remarkable private retreat located on the beach in the village of Faro Jose Ignacio, Uruguay. Playa Vik Jose Ignacio merges exceptional design, unrivaled location, friendly and flawless service, endless activities and an unparalleled collection of contemporary Uruguayan and international art. It is perched on the most coveted point on the coastline, facing west with sweeping views across the Southern Atlantic Ocean and Playa Mansa, also known as the "calm beach", with exceptional sunsets. Six beautiful houses (Casas), the Sculpture building housing the art work, and the Pavilion make up the property. Each Casa features an art-filled interior and has a unique design scheme, including Ebony Macassar ceilings, hand painted floors and a remarkable mud adobe fireplace. The Pavilion houses the 40-foot long wine cellar or Cava, game room, gym, spa and BBQ dining room.

I have very mixed feelings about this place. The good : Great location, Futuristic design of hotel with attention to detail in furniture etc Spacious suites with floor to ceiling windows, Right on the beach, Infinity pool with exceptional sunsets over it, Staff members work hard and try to meet your needs. The bad: Limited staff means important areas like reception are often left unattended. There is refurbishment works as soon as you walk in so access to main building is tricker and also it’s not aesthetically pleasing to constantly see the construction. In our 1,000$ a night suite, the aircon didn’t work and the heating couldn’t be switched off so it got to the point that we were sweating in a 28 degree room and had to stay in the room with the front door open to let air in. The second night our blackout blinds were disabled by the staff without anyone informing us. They tried to get them to work but unsuccessfully and I asked how we are meant to sleep without them and the reply was « oh it’s ok, the sun doesn’t come up until 8am ». I thought that was a strange reply so I looked and the sunrise time was just before 6. And even if it WERE two hours later, for guests who are paying 1,000 a night, there should be no excuse for not being able to close the blinds. In the end, they found a room next door (with working blinds and a working aircon) which we moved into for the last night. The gym has very old rusty equipment which needs changing asap. Details in the rooms and hotel itself need some TLC- scuffing/ peeling paint/ dirty windows… just general neglect. Food was not great. Especially breakfast which only had toasted bread at the « buffet » and the only thing you can request from the kitchen is eggs. For the price you are paying, a full menu would be nice. Also « cacio and Pepe pasta » is NOT plain pasta with a side of parmesan… Overall, the hotel is gorgeous and location is stunning but I really wish the owners/ management would be more present to make it feel less neglected. I’ve put photos of both the good and the bad.

Setting is beautiful. Service is fine. Rooms are worse than a motel room despite extremely high rates. Nothing worked properly in room (toilets, outlets). Mold in bathrooms, damaged mill work, super cheap furniture and bedding. Really awful experience.

DO NOT STAY AT ANY OF THE VIK PROPERTIES. A heads up about this upscale hotel chain... We understand cancellation policies however there needs to be flexibility and compassion when a mother passes away during a vacation. We tried cancelling a week in advance of arrival, offered a death certificate and this hotel's greed prevented them from giving us a refund. ALL OF THE OTHER HOTELS WE BOOKED AND HAD TO CANCEL GAVE US A FULL REFUND.

playa vik is an intimate, luxury oceanfront hotel in jose ignacio, a hamptons/malibu-like beach town in uruguay. the hotel is decorated with very cool art, is wonderfully comfortable, and has a very cool vibe. while we had a couple of days of less-than-perfect weather, the hotel measured up in almost every way, and when we encountered anything that was less than perfect, the general and operations managers, concierges, and all the staff worked very hard to make it better. and in every case they succeeded! thank you sabrina, david, delfina, camila, franco, pamela, patricia, marcos, and mauricio (sorry if i keft simeone out) - your responsiveness was extraordinary, when one of our rooms had an air conditioning problem at midnight, franco arranged for overnight accommodations at the neighboring property, bahia vik. technicians came out first thing the next morning (a sunday!) and checked out absolutely everything that could be wrong, could go wrong, and had gone wrong, until everyone was certain the cooling system worked properly. and even though the hotel had not planned to serve dinner on new years eve, they opened their kitchen in response to our request to “eat in” that night. not many hotels would do that. jose ignacio has wonderful restaurants and interesting shops. off the beaten path and lots of fun,

We love Uruguay and absolutely love Jose Ignacio. Playa Vik is a special spot that is modern yet comfortable. Service was very good and the rooms are amazing. You can walk to La Huella and the town and yet be removed to the tranquility of the property. The property and the town have a feeling that is hard to replicate and this is must spot for globetrotters.
