About the Hotel

For the ultimate in California dreaming, check into Shade Hotel. Located in laid back Manhattan Beach, a coastal community of Los Angeles, this stylish boutique hotel was listed as the #6 reason to visit LA by the editors of Condé Nast Traveler. It also landed on the magazine's prestigious Hot List, as one of only 19 US properties to make the cut. But a rendezvous at Shade has as much to do with attitude as it does comfort. The rooms alone make quite a statement with a lighting system known as chromotherapy that color-customizes your surroundings and alters your mood with the flick of a switch. The shoji-screened baths provide an organic feel with two-person spa tubs, soothing showers and luxe linens. When color cannot provide the necessary jolt, play the part of barista by toying with your in-room espresso machine. Other unconventional perks include a Pillow Library and complimentary Beach Breakfast Buffet.

Reviews for Shade Hotel

We loved our stay!

We had an amazing visit! Staff was super friendly, helpful and on top of everything! I was surprised with rose petals, chocolate strawberries and champagne. The hotel restaurant “Zinc” had amazing food, we got chicken empanadas that were so flavorful and flaky/crispy and delicious with a yummy avocado salsa, the bacon wrapped shrimp could easily be a main course, they were huge and had a sweet and flavorful sauce on a light bed of cabbage. Also had the steak frites, substituted the fries for loaded potato, it also came with a lovely salad and it was all wonderful! Steak had peppercorn sauce, loaded potato had a crispy shell with a flavorful creamy potato with bacon pieces in it! The hot tub filled from the ceiling and had awesome lighting with color changing remote on the wall! We had a second story room and there was a balcony with a small table and two chairs to sit and enjoy the fresh beach air! They had a Keurig with delicious coffee, black tea, cream, sugar and sugar substitutes. The mini bar had many things, including different snack items, juices, sparkling water, types of alcohol, a lovers kit, not sure what’s in there. The shower had awesome shampoo, conditioner, and body wash! Whish products smell so good! They also had a little sewing kit, tooth care kit, shower cap, all kinds of things that are easy to forget! We absolutely loved our stay!

Meh

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Meh it was fine. The room was super outdated with broken tiles on the floor. Giant, old, dark furniture with a bathtub in the middle of the room. Look and style of the room has not aged well. Allegedly there are newly renovated rooms but sadly we didn’t see those. Staff was friendly and the location is unbeatable.

Noisy

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

In terms of location the hotel is at the top of the hill that runs down to the beach. There is no beach view of course. The hotel was generally very noisy due to its open design with the rooms facing the open area. The bar can be noisy late at night and the room doors dont have closures so they bang shut. Rooms are small but adequate.

Hometown return to luxury accommodations...

Recent refresh was well done. All amenities were nice. Bed very comfortable. The only thing missing: a bidet. It's 2024 and every where we go internationally, especially across the Pacific, a bidet can be found in every hotel room. Would be a great upgrade.

Bring earplugs, noise canceling headphones, or just stay somewhere else.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Worst hotel experience I have had in a WHILE. Felt like we were in a motel 6 with how much noise there was, walls are very poorly insulated. We were on the first floor off the courtyard, lots of loud talking at 11pm, sounded like someone was dragging furniture around above us, and could hear every car driving past. I asked the front desk for earplugs and could STILL hear the noise. Finally doubled up pillows around my head and was able to sleep. I also asked them to make up the pull out bed when they called to confirm my check in and when I arrived at 8pm the bed was not prepared so we had to wait while an attendant came with linens. When asked about the gym they said they partnered with Equinox across the street. Their version of across the street is a 9 minute drive away. Not a luxury experience in the slightest.
