Is this really a 5 star hotel?

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

With so many hotels on offer in Times Square it was hard to choose which one to stay at but we chose the Intercontinental due to location and room size and 5 stars. However it did not turn out to be the best choice we could have made. Upon arrival we were ignored by the door staff and dragged our own suitcases in. Check in was swift and as expected they took a $300 charge on our credit card which was refundable when we checked out. There was no offer to take our cases to the room. After settling in we chose to have dinner at The Stinger Bar as it was 10pm. The food was good and the service good too. The food here is expensive ($30 for a club sandwich) and the lager is $11 for 3/4 of a pint. The next day we were going to the Macy’s parade which was the reason for the trip. We asked reception, concierge and the door staff where the parade is and not one of them knew. Luckily we just followed the crowds and is was about a 5 min walk away, so we were surprised the staff did not know this. We returned from the parade for breakfast and this was ok. Not great but ok and there was a sense of being rushed as they were so busy they clearly needed the tables. The breakfast is $38 each but the next day we found Juniors up the street which is a typical American diner and the food was amazing. Pancakes, grits, scrambled egg and bacon, everything you would imagine an American breakfast to be. In America you are expected to tip on everything and there is also an 8% tax paid on all purchases. For example, at JFK they advertise the taxi price at $70 but it is actually $95 with the tax and tolls etc, plus a 20% tip on top of that. The hotel room was ok. The bed was comfy and the room was a good size, but a little tatty due to wear and tear on the tables. Our view was terrible - we overlooked office building at the rear. The room was very quiet though and we did not hear the road or other guests. We were ignored all through our stay by the door staff but often watched them interact with other guests, taking their bags and offering them taxis etc. They offer to arrange guests a SUV taxi to the airport for $125 but in reality you can book this on line for $65, which is what we did to get to the airport. The staff at The Stinger Bar literally had no conversation at all. When you ordered a drink they nod, serve you the drink and that is it. Not a word. We found a great Irish bar around the corner which had a great atmosphere and was also cheaper. Our flight was not until evening so we asked at reception about a late check out. We were told this would cost $150 so we thought better of it, but I am surprised to read the review of people who were given a late checkout. In conclusion, this was not a 5 star hotel or experience. More a 3 star and we would not return to this hotel. We felt we were treated differently for being British as the service or interaction was no where near the kind given to American or Asian guests. When staying in a 5 star hotel you want to feel a bit special, and we actually felt like 2nd class citizens.

Great service and comfortable large rooms, but could be a little quieter

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

This would’ve been a three star review if it wasn’t for Ahmed at the front desk. I booked two rooms through a third party website with no bed type guarantee, but Ahmed managed to shuffle things around during check-in and find me two connected rooms, one with two double beds and one with a king bed, which worked out great for my family (including two young girls). The rooms were very spacious (probably one of the biggest rooms I’ve stayed in NYC) and seemed to have been recently renovated. Everything worked as expected: good/spacious shower, large TV, comfortable beds, etc. The only downside, which is the reason why I’m taking one star from my rating, was the noise. We stayed on the 4th floor facing 8th Ave and the street noise was pretty bothersome. Thankfully it got better later in the night on both nights, but I can see this being a deal breaker for a light sleeper.

Thanksgiving at the Stinger Lounge

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We spent Thanksgiving in NYC and had a wonderful time at the Stinger Lounge. Drinks and food were good, and Eddy was incredible - he made us laugh and had the whole lounge greeting one another and building great memories. He's special. We'll be back.

Great experience.Very friendly staff

My wife and I stayed at Intercontinental Times Square for Thanksgiving but decided to stay inside because of the rain and my wife was not feeling well. We had our housekeeper Diana that helped my wife with extra pillows and making sure she gets some water. She left our room spotless after the mess we had. Very helpful young lady and very charming. Thank you. Also Francisco from the front desk was very helpful to us. Thank you for our wonderful stay in NYC

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the InterContinental Times Square. The location was perfect, just close enough to the action but still quiet ”enough".

The staff were all very friendly and incredibly helpful. We will be back.
