Gussied up Marriott Disguised as a Luxury Hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

The Pendry is part of the Montage collection but that doesn't make it luxury. The hotel is fine and there have been some upgrades that appropriately attract a business crowd. The trendy set is drawn to the circular bar so it has a lot of activity at night and over the weekend. We were there for a full week dealing with some family obligations in the area and our stay overlapped with the fires in LA. Because the hotel allows pets it filled to the max with evacuees and their dogs and cats, who were mostly adorable. The hotel handled the influx well but we had one evening with a dog whining all night while their owner partied somewhere outside of the room. Not the hotel's fault but something to consider when booking. My main beef with the Pendry is that there is no option to self-park. There is only Valet which is $65 a night. This is unusual for Southern California and also inconvenient when the hotel is busy. For that reason alone, I would not stay there. We did figure out a way to self-park at an office building next door for $40 a night and we could get our car ourselves, saving time (turn to the right at the valet and go up the walkway 75 feet and you're there). But it's ridiculous to pay those prices for parking in southern California. This is not NYC. The rooms are fine, but the outlets are awkwardly too close together only allowing one brick to plug into a two-prong outlet. Minor inconveniences but charging devices is basic these days and for either a business or luxury hotel, this should be fixed.

Perfect Stay in Newport Beach

We had the most amazing stay during the holidays! The property is stunning and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and attended to. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable and had an impeccable view. Dining was a highlight and I really recommend Viamara for lunch, service was wonderful and the food was delicious. There is a great pool and hot tub area with food and drink service, and the hotel is in a great location. Highly recommend and can’t wait to stay again soon!

Great place to treat yourself. Home away from home. I would def recommend trying Viamara. So delicious Tino at bar Pendry is the best! We went to celebrate New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Our time was so enjoyable and felt like the perfect party and relaxation

Unprofessional and unethical Staff

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Thought it would be fun staying NYE 2025 with couple of friends in a suite. It’s a beautiful hotel and great location. Food and drinks and ambiance were great. I had couple of rude encounters with wait staff girls at the bar. Obviously it was a very busy night and my girlfriend and I were standing by a high top table and placed our drinks for merely a few minutes at the edge of the table as we were talking. Katherine very aggressively approached us and in a demeaning way and loud voice told us to remove our drinks immediately as the table was reserved. I advised her that she could have had a much more gentle approach and would have been just as effective. The worst experience was yet to come in the morning of New Years as my friend and I were leaving and had our car pulled up from valet. We were refused my car key by Jared in valet and blurted out in front of other guests that we need to settle our bill. Mind you the room was under the guest name and who was also paying for everything as he was physically still in the room and had house before check out time. We were instructed to go to reception. Upon approaching the reception, Kashelle overwhelmed by being by herself had us wait a long time as she was dealing with something so we had to go since we had an hour drive. We asked her why they are holding my key hostage and again her and another employee blurted out that the balance needs to be taken care of. We looked at her and told her that she needs to do her job efficiently and obviously has not been trained properly. First of all it’s illegal and unethical to speak a guest’s private information in front of other guests and secondly, again a better approach would be to contact the paying guest in the room to resolve their issue. We were not even the registered guests and they were holding my car key as hostage. We had a screaming match and I attempted to call the police to resolve this matter to have her finally release my key. The registered guest was contacted by us letting him know what was going on and he was shocked and embarrassed that we had to go through all this early in the morning and settled it. BTW: room and services were all paid so not sure what their problem was or if it was a case of a mistake of identity. The experience left me mortified and confused on the level of professionalism and ethics from their staff here. For this level of hotel, I was not expecting this. Will not return back to this property. Shame on management team!

Worst NYE experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I had the utmost unprofessional and unethical experience upon check out. The management team really lacks here for improper training. We had a suite for New Year’s Eve and spent lots of money with the bar, restaurant and room service. 2 of 3 guests asked for our valet car to be brought up to leave. Main paying guest was still in the room showering. When valet brought up our car, jared said we need to stop by the reception first so we did except one person only handling the reception on New Year’s Day (which is crazy). She seemed overwhelmed by phone call and we waited almost 5 minutes for her to even acknowledge us and couldn’t wait any longer and went back to valet. When tried to retrieve our car, once again staff of 4 were telling us we need to pay our bill before we go out loud in front of other guests hearing this and they were holding my car key as collateral. We went back to the front reception and called guest in the room and he said what’s going on? I’m still here as is my car and once I leave and check out I’ll take care of the charges. This is normal procedure and if the staff made an error to not collect proper incidentals, there is a more professional manner to handle this and not air out the privacy of their guests in front of other people. Kashelle at front desk worst manners and we had to get loud to be heard that they are violating our privacy as well as holding my car as collateral. We were calling the police to get involved when she finally said give her the car key. This is not over as I’ll be reporting this hotel as we have everything on video for violation of privacy and illegally keeping my car key from leaving. Get your priorities straight and shame on you for putting us in that situation early morning of New Years. Their staff is very abrasive as I also had a similar experience with the way a waitress approached us at the table. Very bad manners.
