About the Hotel

Inspired by the insatiable wanderlust and rebellious spirit of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the historic downtown mansion once owned by the businessman and scion has been reinterpreted for the modern era as a lively and stylish social destination. From a secret bar tucked into a corner of the sumptuous Doris Duke-inspired parlor to the specially-commissioned series of mysterious and moody old world still lifes sprinkled throughout the foyer and lounge, the scene at The Vanderbilt is crackling with coastal curiosities and alluring eccentricities waiting to be discovered.

Fabulous stay in Newport

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Absolutely fabulous experience! My dog and I traveled here for a weekend and everything was incredible. The hotel itself is gorgeous, the room was spacious and comfortable with a very warm aesthetic. The hospitality was top notch, with both of us being greeted by name anytime we came in contact with staff. The dining areas were beautiful and every meal was great. We will definitely stay again.

Gorgeous and festive environment for a short, celebratory trip.

For a long weekend getaway that was cozy and easy from NYC, The Vanderbilt was a great winter pick for an anniversary weekend. Upgrading to a suite was ideal, because it allowed time spent relaxing in the room to be more comfortable. Weather can be iffy on the island during this time of year, but the hotel is located conveniently to all the best dining and provides umbrellas to help weather the elements. Wish we had brought bathing suits to enjoy the indoor pool on rainy days. Also, I wish there had been a fire in the fireplace, just to add a touch of coziness, even though the setting and scent were very appealing without. The decorations were fun, the grounds were lively, and Newport has a lot to offer during this time.

Third time at this Beautiful Property. The staff gives you the most personal experience. All of the amenities are in the building and you can walk right downtown. My 10 yr old always feels welcomed and it is his favorite hotel in the US. Especially with their indoor/outdoor pool and walking distance to Ryan's Arcade and Kilwins.

Gorgeous hotel, but needs more attention to details

The Vanderbilt is stunning, especially decorated for Christmas. Both the public rooms and the guest rooms are gorgeous, cozy and comfortable. Some rooms have fabulous bathtubs, and they all have great coffee/tea/bar setups and fun libraries. Morgan the concierge is wonderful - hard working, fun, and extremely knowledgeable. We were there between Christmas and New Years so this issue might not apply to other times, but there were so many parties and weddings that it became a huge inconvenience. We couldn’t really use the public rooms, and were always being directed to back stairways, and basically told to get out of the way. The hotel has a nice gym, but the cable machine - the only piece of weight equipment- was broken our entire stay. The many fireplaces were never lit, and only one of the outside lanterns ever worked. Small details, but when you’re paying over $900/room, everything needs to be in working condition. The bedroom windows had a weird blackout film covering them that was quite unsightly and there were a few maintenance issues, but nothing drastic and the staff is extremely attentive. We loved the hotel, and will hopefully return when everything is in order and we can workout in the gym then sip cocktails by the (lit) fireplace.

Toast To 2025

New Year's Eve at The Vanderbilt!!! What wonderful stay and event. . . from the moment we arrived Mr. Saieed rolled out the red carpet with a big smile and inviting demeanor that makes you feel like you're pulling up to your own Mansion in Downtown Newport. Given one claim ticket, my car was valet, my bags were handled and direction is given to the front desk. Arriving on the earlier side is always a concern when checking in that our room may not be ready, especially on New Year's Eve Day. Not the case!!! Being treated by more smiling faces offering complimentary water & wine, welcome packet, room keys and pleasant escort to our room, Before the room tour is complete our bags are being placed on luggage racks and hung in the closet. Minutes later a knock on the door, complimentary truffles, fresh oranges, bottles of water and a welcome note. The room was huge, well appointed with bits of history coupled with modern touches that made the stay extremely nostalgic and comfortable. The drinks were well crafted and flowed, the food was plentiful and delicious. Live music and dancing with an amazing NYE countdown. . . Breakfast the next morning overlooking the courtyard was perfect end to a perfect stay. Well done Vanderbilt!!!
