The Slate is no ordinary beachside resort of thatched-roof cabanas – in its secluded location against a backdrop of dense rainforest, it crosses into the territory of cutting-edge design hotel, and the juxtaposition of nature and industry is alluring. The inspiration for The Slate came from owner Wichit Na-Ranong, whose ancestors led the country’s development through the tin mining industry. Na-Ranong pays tribute to “black gold” through sleek architecture and dark color motifs punctuated by objets d’art. Restaurants Rivet and Rebar, led by chef Fabrizio Crocetta, serve up some of Thailand’s most innovative and eclectic fare.

Amazing place for families, location, food, staff, service and facilities are all faultless, I couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough. It's a great base to either just relax and unwind or to use as a base to visit other parts of Thailand.

I absolutely HATE The Slate. Why? Because this Bill Bensley-designed masterpiece has completely ruined all other hotel experiences for my family. My teenage children now burst into tears when checking into other "luxury" hotels, dramatically wailing "But it's not The Slate!" We've been staying here for over 10 years, starting when they were just 5 and 3, and the spacious D-Buk suites have spoiled us beyond repair. The staff's impeccable service is infuriating - how dare they remember our drink preferences? And don't get me started on always finding sun loungers by the pool. Where's the fun in not having to wake up at 5am to reserve one? While we love Black Ginger and Rivet & Rebar, we often escape to the beachfront restaurants on Nai Yang Beach where you can wiggle your toes in the sand while dining for a fraction of the price. It's like The Slate knew we needed a break from their excellence and conveniently placed affordable alternatives nearby. The final straw? That signature Champaka scent that greets you the moment you step into their airport transfer. Now my kids sniff disappointedly at every hotel lobby we enter, declaring "It doesn't smell like The Slate." After a decade of visits, I can confidently say I hate The Slate... for setting an impossible standard that no other hotel can match. Thanks for nothing, Slate. We'll reluctantly see you again soon.

Great Start of our Thailand journey with our two kids. Close to airport (without noise) and very close to beach and local food and shops. Nice place with beautiful nature and industrial look within the hotel area. The infrastructure is on a good level (e.g. rooms), while it could be improved at some places (pool features not working).

Fantastic resort. The very intentional design aesthetic is a cool mix of industrial and tropical. Emaculate service from everyone i encountered. The best breakfest buffet ive ever had in my life and the dinner i had at Black ginger was next level. Id go back to this resort in a second.

Pros: 1) The kids’ club is perfect. My daughter didn’t want to leave and cried on the last day. 2) Food is superb (both Tin Mine and Black Ginger), we wish we could try Rivet next time. 3) Beautiful rooms and pools and smell of floral. 4) A very nice spa, I slept during the spa treatment so I wasn’t sure what the massage lady has done on me :P 5) kids eat free. Cons: 1) Far away from the tourist sites like Patong. Would be great if the resort could offer free shuttle to Patong. 2) Mosquitoes and black flies. I have like 20 mosquito bites on my legs. 3) Kids’ club closes too early - I suggest to open the kids’ club until 9pm so the kids can still play some board games after dinner. 4) no inflatable and beach toys are provided at the swimming pools (my kid doesn’t know how to swim, but bringing a life jacket and beach toys in our baggage will occupy too much space). 5) Bicycles - those the resorts provided are too big for young children, would be great if you could provide small bicycles with spare wheels and scooters. If the resort can pay more attention to these details, I would definitely give a 5+!
