Embodying the spirit of adventurous travel and cool Nordic design that dwells in its sister property Ion Adventure Hotel, the 18-room Ion City Hotel is the citified version of Ion’s original award-winning countryside retreat. Located in the heart of Reykjavik, with access to many shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants, Ion City is housed in a smartly renovated building that retains its original architectural beauty yet is augmented by outside walls featuring a motif inspired by traditional Icelandic weaving. Inside, guests discover luxuriously organic interiors defined by clean lines, Icelandic art, and a palette of gray and white, contrasted by warm-hued wooden floors. Here, a world of gunmetal grays, fine-grained woods, and regional design pieces are bathed in light that spills in through large windows that offer expansive panoramic views of Reykjavik. A stay at Ion City also includes farm-fresh cuisine, a go-to bar for locals, a gym, and a private dining room.

I ended up in this hotel because I had an accident hiking and broke my ankle in multiple places. I came directly from the hospital here and was in bad shape. Everyone was nice but Virginia went above and beyond every single time I encountered her. She was warm, compassionate, highly competent, and very helpful. I truly appreciate Virginia's care and compassion that she showed me while I stayed in this hotel. (one thing to note: this hotel is on a pedestrian street so not an ideal choice if you have mobility issues as most cabs will not bring you to the door).

The hotel is in an amazing location beautifully designed and offers just exceptional experience. Virginia at the reception stops the show for us and really was the highlight of our stay. She was fun helpful and easy to chat with. Parking is a little tricky but with some help from Virginia we found a spot about 2 blocks away.

This is a hostel, not a 4 star hotel. The rooms are small and clean. The staff are unhelpful. The gym is 3 machines in a small room. You can’t even get a coffee at the property. Location is good (but noisy) but it really is just a room. Don’t expect a hotel. I can’t stress how underwhelming this property is. I’m a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum member and this is the single worst Marriott property I’ve stayed in.

Loved this chic boutique hotel located on the main thoroughfare of Reykjavik. Walkable (15m) from the BSI Bus Terminal if your plane lands in the early morning hours. I was lucky enough that my room was available at 7am so I could leave my stuff. Very well appointed rooms and phenomenal water pressure in the showers (I would return for that alone!). Very comfortable beds too which is a big bonus if you've been traveling the day before. Incredibly helpful and kind front desk staff. Would recommend this hotel to anyone interested. Pro tip: If you're a Marriott Bonvoy member and want Bonvoy points, you have to make the reservation through the Marriott app and not through other websites (i.e. American Express Travel!)

This was our first trip to Iceland and we decided to spend a few nights at Ion City due to its location to the main tourist strip. We spent 3 nights in this location and can't say enough good things about the hotel. We arrived slightly before the designated check-in time and our room was ready for us which was very good considering a long night/morning of flights. During our stay we tried each night to see the Northern Lights but each night the tour was cancelled due to weather. This was the point we realized how great the staff was. Virginia was great with empathy and a quick follow-up of different suggestions. She nailed it with her food suggestions! She was quick with checking the weather forecast for us each afternoon to give us a prognosis of her outlook for light viewing. I cannot say enough good things about her and how awesome she is! The room itself was extremely comfy and clean. We upgraded to a room with a sauna and was able to enjoy some relaxation in the warmth, a must in my opinion after spending the day wandering the city in colder, rainier, windy weather. The bed was great, the lights... well, they took some getting used to how they function. The noise level was completely fine even though you're right on the main street and it was over a weekend visit. Don't get me wrong, you can hear music but it never seemed overly loud and disruptive. We absolutely would return to spend more nights at Ion City Hotel. Great location, close to bus stops and close to everything you'd want to see! PS - Don't forget how great Virginia is!
