Let me start by saying the hotel is a stunning building set in lovely grounds and has some every nice staff But two things happened which have put us off Spain let alone this hotel We had the first two nights and the last night of our holiday here as it is close to the car ferry and we wanted to see Santander The weather was foul on the outbound journey and our ship was severely delayed - so we got our tour company to call the hotel to tell them we would miss the first night but would still be arriving and we accepted losing our money on night one When we arrived they acknowledged receipt of the call and that our room had been pre paid A few hours later they told us that as a no-show we had to now pay them for two nights and claim it back from the holiday company It seemed like this was an effort to avoid paying commissions but either way their way of helping us to get over a nasty start to our holiday was to give us an administrative and possibly financial problem Later they changed their story to say the room hadn’t been paid which was not true This went on all day and only got resolved when we checked out the next morning after another stressful day On our last day we arrived around 6pm and parked our pristine bright yellow Porsche in a large parking space Whereupon a vile Spanish woman leaped from her battered van in the next space and started screaming about how we had caused the damage despite it being above our roof height and with not a mark on our car which shows every blemish from a thousand yards She then went into the hotel where the CCTV showed there was no contact but she carried on with a fake call to the police Then her and her weasel boyfriend stayed in the bar for hours talking to the general manager - apparently he is a regular drinker in their bar We then spent the last night worrying about them returning to vandalise our car The staff did work hard to give us peace of mind and the car was not damaged but the woman was clearly a scammer and they should have thrown her out and or called the police for her blatant effort to scam us

As you drive up to it the looming palace is very impressive Until you step inside When you travel back to the land that time forgot A dark fusty hotel that has no atmosphere despite its amazing history Creaking floors and dingey rooms with a wardrobe that would not be out of place in Narnia Shower in the bath Tiny little reception. A restaurant which opens if it feels like it A bar which is death’s ante room Breakfast has the smallest selection of hot food I have ever seen Gym is tiny and the pool is closed And staff that have had a charisma bypass - if you can find one that is The management of this place have to accept responsibility for this heroic failure It is barely a three star and the only thing it is good at is charging

We were here 3 nights for a wedding. I usually take a liking or disliking to a hotel as soon as I enter. Well, i loved it. Its an old classic yet is super comfortable. The location, the spacious rooms and bathrooms, huge beds, with lovely antiques scattered about. Best thing IS THE VIEW FROM THE ROOMS!!!! Stunnnning!!!!! The terrace where you can have a drink or coffee has beautiful views too. The food is good in the cafe downstairs and I thought the breakfasts were very adequate. Everything correct. If i were to nitpick I’d love coffee NOT from a machine in the breakfast restaurant , but from a pot. Beautiful grounds, free parking and close to most things. Would i stay here again, ABSOLUTELY!!! Loved it.

Hotel is a lovely old building set in a great location. Just a 20 minute walk to the centre if you don’t mind hills. We felt the Hotel lacked the services of a five star hotel and would rate it a four star hotel. The cleaning of our room was hit and miss at best. The balcony was never mopped or cleaned and dirt was left there for the full 10 days. I often had to ask for tissues or toilet paper after the room was cleaned. The soap and body lotion were not of a recognisable high end brand for that of a five star hotel. We had to make a complaint about breakfast before we got good service. The restaurant did not open until late and there was no offering at lunchtime only bar food. Disappointing but we went to some fab restaurants at lunch time in Santander.

The hotel has excellent location and magnificent view over the sea. The rooms are spacious, the impressive history of this hotel is like a novel, you can learn a lot. They have parking free of charge just in front of the hotel, and in walking distance almost to all interesting places in the city. However, some services are unavailable, which is a big gap for five star Gran Luxury hotel in this case. For example, the restaurant was not open during our stay. Or, on the other hand, there were no help with luggage as there were nobody in front door to help you. People, who work there, did all their best, and we appreciate those who were taking care of us in the bar or reception, but they can’t do miracles if some services are unavailable. The calamari dish in the bar was poor and not fresh, and that’s with all food in the bar.
