Reviews for ION Luxury Adventure Hotel

Loved it!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We just spent 5 days in Iceland last week and had the most wonderful time! The country is breathtaking. Our stay at the Ion Adventure Hotel met all our expectations. The staff is friendly and accommodating...really lovely. The rooms are simple modern, yet comfortable and cozy. The restaurant food is delicious and nicely presented, even though it's a small menu. The sauna and geo-thermal pool were lovely to have at our disposal. And we could see the Northern Lights 3 nights out of our 5 day stay. The lights weren't super strong, but it was still thrilling to see them right over our heads! Since the hotel is located in the middle of Thingvellir National Park and Golden Circle area, it's beautifully remote. Yet the drive from the airport and to and from Reykyavik is easy to do. I can't say enough good things. The only minor issue is the sulfur smell from the geothermal water can be strong at times. But knowing that it's natural and from the water, we were ok with it. Some people have trouble with it. However, I have to say that my skin and hair benefited nicely from the water. Check it out for yourselves though. I think you'll love it.

Overpriced and underperformed

I can’t complain about the staff, they were super friendly . But as others have said, the odour out and inside was very strong and uncomfortable. The bathroom was very worn . Dinner was mediocre but expensive. Iceland was amazing but this is one hotel I wouldn’t return to.

As advertised - whoop! Whop! Loved it!

Fantastic! As described. Remote, quiet, respectful of privacy. Great location to relax, hang in private spaces including thermal tub, northern lights bar, and other communal spaces (off-season). As a Marriot Titanium Lifetime member who has spent a lifetime in hotels , this is now one of my favorite places. It is remote -(their website and every travel article tells you so), there is only one restaurant (same as above), it's next to a geothermal plant and you see it..(facility was first dormitory for the builders of the plant), you can smell Sulfur (like most of Iceland - it's from the geo thermal vents - not something controlled by the hotel). I love this property. We'll be back!

Great choice in a beautiful location

We enjoyed our stay at the Ion very much. It’s our 3rd trip to Iceland so we did not mind the somewhat remote location. The drive there gets really beautiful about the last 20 minutes with a lot of beautiful views. There are also beautiful spots to hike very close to the hotel. Some quite historic. The geothermal plant is close to the hotel but not a deterrent. Main attractions like waterfalls on the Ring Road are about 20 minutes away so not far and you need a car in Iceland anyway. Food at Silfra was quite good but the menu does not vary much night to night so you may want to eat dinner one night before returning to the hotel. Buffet breakfast was excellent and plentiful. In early Oct the hotel was full of young travelers ( we are older) and it feels like they cater to all ages. Front desk staff and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms are beautiful. My only complaint ( not major) is there were no towels in the men’s locker room after dinner ( for the wonderful pool) and no water in the relaxation room one night. Service in a crowded restaurant was a bit spotty but they may have been overwhelmed by a very full restaurant . The lighting in the bathrooms is poor. Add a lighted makeup mirror to improve this please. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel. Nice to get Marriott points too.

WORSE HOTEL EXPERIENCE

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Worse experience on my 15 day trip around Iceland. The sulfur smell is choking and caused severe headaches with 2 of my friends and wife. The hotel is located about one mile from a geothermal operation. We were unable to sleep. The hotel is nice but still NOT FINISHED. The hotel and restaurant are VERY EXPENSIVE. Breakfast is not included and was about $40 per person. We had an average dinner there that was the most expensive meal on our trip - about $80 per person. They charged about $2 for a pad of butter and everything is a la carte. Staff is friendly but unable to help with choking odor. There are no individual air filtering units or systems in the hotel. AVOID THIS HOTEL.
