Utterly filthy

Wow, what a place…faulty towers eat your heart out, I don’t know how basil and Sybil didn’t jump out from behind reception. I can’t even begin to tell you about this place, yes it’s old, I get that, but it’s also dirty and most parts are broken. Went to the spa, pool was freezing, bubbles in hydration pool didn’t work, steam room didn’t work, and that other room didn’t work either. Robes are fine if you’re a size 6 and I’ve seen more bubbles in my farts in the bath than in the jacuzzi. Bedrooms were old and tatty, bad painting, dusty, bed linen dirty, I wrote in all the dust around the room, someone had punched a hole in the door, the sanitary bin was broken and filthy, towels were limited, hot water took 10 mins to arrive, door knobs we’re missing and no phone to call reception or even a hair dryer in the room! You couldn’t put the extractor fan on as rope had fallen off. As for food… we booked the tapas place… no one said it was out door dining! It was freezing cold, they did hand out blankets though… food was extremely slow…plates weren’t cleared away, food was stacked on top of dirty plates… food was then freezing cold, the chef told us after nearly an hour he had no onion bharjis, and then they forgot two meals. We gave up and went to bed albeit hungry and cold. Thought go back make a drink and eat my biscuits… nope they had already been eaten! Packet was empty!! Thought clean slate… breakfast… well find a clean table, the sausage and bacon was under cooked, actually was the worst breakfast ever, sat there listening to everyone else complaining. Then I had to watch a dog Pooh in front of the restaurant window whilst eating my sausage. Utterly grosse. Luxurious stay away? No but funny! Next time I will book the travel lodge don’t waste you money here it’s a real dive how Elemis brand here I don’t know.

Such welcoming staff. Thank you all, especially Peter, Kate, Ana. Amazing spa facilities; great food; fab quirky room.

Definitely go for a superior room. Ours had an oak four poster bed and was massive! Beware the hot water - it’s very hot ! A great location for exploring Somerset: Glastonbury, Wells, Street all a short drive away. We came for 3 nights - worth it.

Comfortable country stay

Truly lovely overnight spa break. This was our third overnight visit to Charlton House. I'd bought an overnight stay (with breakfast) on a cracking Black Friday deal, which always helps. We were very pleased with our room (25), which had its own patio area leading out to the gardens. The room was spacious and comfortable. There were no maintenance issues. The decor is 'shabby chic', so much better than soulless modern hotel rooms. The overnight stay allowed us access to the spa until 9pm, which was a real treat. I've visited the spa numerous times and always enjoy it. Especially after dark, when the facilities are quiet. Part of our plans is the trip to Whitstones chippy for an eat in supper. Only 10 minutes away and great food Breakfast was included in the package and was very tasty. The continental breakfast options had diminished since Monitigo took over. However there was a full plate of hot breakfast and we left well fed. We enjoyed a second visit to the spa, before making the short trip home. What others haven't enjoyed - the decor - I feel makes the place relaxed and homely. I will be looking out for another offer to hopefully enable me to return in the autumn.

We had a great experience... and have high standards and expectations...

We've come back from a 2 night stay and have to say we had a great experience. On arrival my husband told the gentleman at reception it was his birthday and whilst we sat enjoying the complimentary tea and coffee in the garden he arranged to have chocolate truffles in the room ready for our arrival - this level of detail continued throughout the visit with lovely morning breakfasts and a super curry night last night...our room was lovely and quirky, with a shabby but beautifully stylish design. It opened up into the outdoor courtyard area where some elements of the spa were located providing us with direct access - today on our last day we got talking to Will, the SPA manager/ attendant and he was so knowledgable and helpful in explaining how to use the various components on offer for health benefits, guiding us and reassuring us in the use of the plunge pool even... yes, we plunged! Yes, it was cold! But great .. we loved our time here from start to finish and will definately be back... we topped our visit off today with a visit to Wells which is not far away, they have market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays - we highly recommend both!! ... and will definately be back.

Poor administration - watch out for “incidental” payments

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Montigo A nice hotel with the experience undermined by poor administration. When we checked in we were told that they required a £50 payment for “incidentals”. I dislike this procedure but many places to it and I little option but to accept it. When I checked out I expected the meal and drinks to be deducted from the £50 - they were, after all, incidentals. But no, instead they insisted that we had to pay for this on the spot and said our £50 would be refunded in a couple of days. 6 days later and two emails sent and I am still waiting. I think that is unacceptable.
