About the Hotel

A member of the distinguished von Essen Hotels Collection, Thornbury Castle is a magnificent castle palace just 90 minutes west of London in North Bristol, England. King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, slept in what is now the Duke's Bedchamber, and today this accommodation is one of your many sumptuous choices. Among the fascinating historic appointments are stone walls, coats of arms, tapestries, arrow-slit windows, and the oldest Tudor gardens in England.

Thornbury Castle is uniquely splendid and wonderful in every way. The history comes alive from the moment you drive through the gateway and what follows is a stunning hotel and restaurant experience in breathtaking surroundings. The service is world class, friendly and thoughtful.

Hidden historical treasure

This is a hidden gem. Rooms are incredible. Like living a part of history. There are not enough good things to say about the stafff. This is six star service. The food is better than any upscale restaurant. The grounds are amazing. Only 8 £ from train station and you are in the only Tudor castle you can stay in. We had an incredible time. This is a bucket list adventure for someone who loves history.

Tudor luxury

We love to try staying at historic hotels, and Thornbury was fantastic. The venue is superb and well maintained. What really made our visit though were the staff. All of whom we met were extremely friendly and professional. The meal in the restaurant was fabulous and worthy of their 3 rosette classification. It was interesting dining in such a historic setting. Our suite was split on 2 levels and was quirky and interesting but luxurious. I can’t really fault our visit!

Birthday treat 😋

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Had a birthday meal here yesterday. We were the only ones in the place, so it was very quiet and awkward to begin with, until more customers showed up. Bread served warm and melts in the mouth. Then, the cauliflower espuma was delightful. A simple vegetable was taken to exquisite levels. For starters, we had mushroom veloute, which could've had more pickled shrooms to even out the taste or even spread out so they weren't in one mouthful. My partner had the chicken terrine, and it was her least favourite, but she enjoyed the mustard gel. Main course we had risotto and pork belly. My risotto lacked in flavour and definitely needed more salt and cheese running through it! The pork belly was tender, but I think they missed the black pudding? Dessert was the best by far, good base, great sorbet, all round the an amazing dish.

Compares with the very best!

If you look at my timeline, you'll see that we have stayed and dined in some of the best hotels in the country. Le Manoir, The Ritz, Cliveden etc, and I must say straight from the outset that Thornbury Caste is a good as any we've ever experienced. It also imparts that special feeling of staying in a real castle. A mention here of Josie, who checked us in and showed us to our room. Professional, happy in her work, she enthusiastically told us all about the hotel and rooms. In fact it's hard to know where to start in terms of compliments! - My wife will tell you how hard to please I am but this place really ticked all the boxes. The money that has been invested in Thornbury Castle to bring it to this standard must be unimaginable! From the monogramed crockery at dinner right through to the towels, slippers, carpet, decor etc.. everything was perfect. We had the Jane Seymour suite and it was all excellent. We simply could not find any aspect we weren't happy with! - Gardens are immaculate and a pleasure to walk around. Now the evening meal. We both opted for the 6 course tasting menu. The whole experience was sublime and without question is on a par with Le Manoir aux Quat 'Saisons. We both wanted to thank Chef and have him autograph the menu! Thornbury Castle is without doubt one of the best hotels we've stayed in and we intend to go back. Thanks to all!
