Conversational murmurs and tinkling piano rise through the atrium, shouts of laughter accenting the melody. Joy understood in any language. There’s a sense of intrigue here that is impossible to place, much like Taipei itself: a melting-pot metropolis infused with Chinese, Japanese and Western influences, where Taoist temples stand next to gleaming skyscrapers and hot springs steam the base of the Tatun volcano group, a mere 15 km. (9 miles) north of the city.

Foremost, high praises to the concierge team in Regent. Kudos to Oliver, Euni and Nicole. They were always responsive and prompt to my questions and offered great restaurant recommendations. I’m highly appreciative of their assistance. Regent is an old hotel despite the renovations. The bed was firm and provided good support. However, the pillows are rather thin and soft. The hotel may want to consider changing the pillows. Otherwise, the room was adequate, and I must say it was rather spacious. Allocation of breakfast seats could be better. Each guest is assigned a seat and table. However, if you are in a group, I would suggest that you arrange beforehand by ring-fencing a space so all can sit together. I do want to caution that breakfast tends to be crowded especially between 7 and 9. It was quite disorientating. The hotel is not aged care friendly. There is a step that requires a staff to stand by to remind folks of the step. They could have just painted a reflective colour to alert guest. Security is not as tight because the hotel still uses key to unlock rooms. It is rather cumbersome to carry keys in our pockets. Lastly, the hotel may want to do without the music in the lifts. It was rather eerie to have cricket sounds and bird noises in the light compromised lifts.

This is such a wonderful hotel. The hotel has been there for a long time but Our room seems like a just completely renovated with a beautiful view. The front desk is very friendly and each day our room was cleaned nicely with evening turn down service. This hotel has a super fluffy pillow that most other hotel don't have. The breakfast is superb. Will definitely back again.

Odd one given under IHG. Hotel is very grand but old, feels like stepping into the 80/90s. I’m sure it was a great hotel back in the days, but having a (heavy) physical key card isn’t exactly common these days. Room itself is big but carpet looks quite dirty and worn out. Hallways are super dark. Gym is sizeable but is all the way in basement, via a separate staircase. Hotel staff is nice and helpful, which is IHG standards. Overall, I think there are better options to stay for business in taipei.

While I appreciated the location and the general ambiance, but I found several aspects that could benefit from improvement, First of all, the hotel appears somewhat dated, which detract from the overall experience. The service did not meet the high standards I have expect from Regent. Regarding the lounges, I was disappointed to learn that eligible IHG members are limited to accessing the Balcony Lounge, which was not well maintained and did not offer the level of comfort and amenities I anticipated. I would say Taipan Lounge was significantly better when compared to Balcony Lounge.

The Regent Taipei is a bit of a contradiction. It's a fine property which, while clearly showing its age, is still well-appointed and gives off a luxury vibe. However, it's also big and chaotic and busy. The lobby, with its various stores and crowds, feels more like a Las Vegas experience than a luxury one. While positioned as a 5-star, when compared to somewhere like the Mandarin, it is clearly a tier lower. Service is commendable for the volume of people they need to deal with. Yet service never feels really personalized. The buffet breakfast is impressive for it's breadth, but again, the crowds can be overwhelming. Likewise the gym is huge and well-appointed but requires a surprisingly effort to get to. I used a complimentary suite upgrade from IHG and was afforded an extra night in the suite as a gesture - much appreciated and beyond what was strictly required. The room was generously spacious and well appointed; but it was old and showing its age. Clearly this was more luxurious at one time, but could use a refresh. The vaunted beds were much firmer than many other places, but I still found them surprisingly comfortable. But perhaps the biggest disappointment was the smell in the main room. An air purifier placed there spoke to the fact that the hotel knows this is an issue. The climate in Taipei makes the issue understandable but unfortunate. More than aesthetic, a refresh may be needed to take care of this more fundamental issue. I'd suggest hardwood instead of carpet going forward. The promise of the Regent is clear, but unfortunately it is let down by both age and size. It is by no means a bad place to stay (and the breakfast buffet may make it worth the price of entry alone!) but if you are looking for a truly luxury experience, you're best served elsewhere. Otherwise, in a room that doesn't smell, the Regent Taipei would be a fine place to stay - good even. Just not quite great.
