About the Hotel

We’re family-owned and our passion shows. Cala Luna is one of the only hotels in Guanacaste, Costa Rica that remains green all year round. There are few barriers between us and nature. Open-plan spaces and secluded accommodations meld into the lush jungle that attracts more wildlife than anywhere else in the area – monkeys, raccoons, iguanas, birds, insects, and us. Within this natural retreat, we offer five-star barefoot luxury that’s open to everyone. We nourish our senses daily through delicious home-grown ingredients, gastronomic farm-to-table dinners, holistic wellness, spa therapies, and deep connection to Mother Earth. From dining with us at our homestead La Senda and walking the world’s largest labyrinth, to sipping cocktails on the beach as the sun slips over the edge of the ocean – you choose the memories to carry home. Welcome to an unforgettable experience.

Not a wellness experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Do not stay or work out here. My six-year-old son and I went to the workout area a couple days ago - to do our typical 10 minute six-year-old workout. It was 7 am and we knew there was a class in a half hour. When we got there, the workout class person, Scott, confronted us. We were not allowed to work out because he had a class in a half hour. There was no one else there. I explained it would be short and we would be done way before he started. Scott said nope - and we were not allowed to use the workout equipment. He was in my face and antagonistic. I was really surprised and embarrassed that my son had to see this jerk. This area is an outdoor platform with a roof - no workout equipment - just some weights and mats and work out bands in a dirty back room. Plenty of room for us. So I told Scott we would get our own (small 5 lb) weights from the back and return them and would not be a bother. We did so and didn’t say anything else to him. Scott sat and glared at us to make us uncomfortable. We were the only ones there. Our workout lasted less than 15 minutes and we left- 10 minutes before his short half hour class began. There was one person who had showed up for the class when we left – my daughter. Scott was doing the overly nice to her but pouty at us game. Not been talked to like that ever in a work out type place - let alone as a hotel guest with my kid. So much for the wellness and peace signs - and the Buddha statue, around us. After we left, it was upsetting to my son and I, so we went to the front desk and wrote a two page complaint to the manager stating what happened. My 6 year old wanted to write part - he wrote Scott ‘overreacted,’ was mean and felt uncomfortable. We then met our family for breakfast. More surprises- Scott followed us there and sat at a table close to us. It looked like he was discussing us - he was laughing and the people he was talking to were turning to look at me and my family. And then trying to turn back around quickly to pretend they aren’t looking. Of course we didn’t say anything to him or escalate whatever he was doing. No response at all to the written complaint and the couple emails I sent. Zero. So I’m doing this review (I almost never negatively review places). The whole thing was weird and unnecessary in your face stuff - the opposite of how you should treat people. Nice “wellness” and spa place. I guess Scott is an owner or manager, or friends with them, or had a bad day. My first ever written complaint to a hotel - after a pretty long life and much traveling - to no avail. Scott put in some effort to make us uncomfortable. We spent good money to stay in the nicer suite and did not get our moneys worth. Food was not great - better meals everywhere else we ate in Costa Rica.

Great light lunch by the pool

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Dropped by here on our walk and were able to have a great overlooking the pool area. We both have food intolerances that were easily managed. Good selection of food and drinks and pleasant staff made for a relaxing time. You don’t have to be a guest to dine

Disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We are currently here. We checked in and were told that everything could be found on the in room tablet. We tried to see our options but the tablet only stays charged for 1 minute and is dead. If this is how you find out things at the resort they should provide a tablet that has been tested before arrival. Next we wanted a shower in the shower bath tub. The shower adjustment nob fell off the wall and a spring fell out of the wall. No bath ability to use the bath. That evening at dinner we were seated incorrectly and had to move after being initially seated. Next we asked for a wine list. It took 2 times to get the list. We asked for more water (it is hot here) and had to ask 3 times to receive it. This morning at breakfast a server asked if I would like coffee. I said yes but it never came. My wife asked for milk for her coffee 3 times and the server was not pleased. Today we returned to our room and the broken shower was still in pieces. There also was not hot water. As of now, the shower is broken and the information tablet does not work. At the cost for this hotel, checking that your access to hotel information should have been checked before our arrival. The shower/bath is still broken. Possibly the problem was not addressed because the shower was not cleaned. Way too much money for broken equipment and poor service.

Wedding at Cala Luna

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Our stay and wedding at Cala Luna was absolutely gorgeous and picture perfect. The Cala Luna team took care of everything- not one ounce of stress or planning needed aside from booking hair and photography but they also have recommendations for that. The wedding itself was decorated so beautifully- every little detail was perfect, no stone left unturned. Our guests raved about the hotel the whole time! We all did morning yoga and ate breakfast (best breakfast bar ever) every morning. The rooms were SO nice- we got the best sleep ever. The beach was so lovely and made for a great sunset. In retrospect I would have absolutely don’t our rehearsal dinner at Cala Luna just to have more time there. It’s very serene and peaceful. Carol and silivia were so sweet and planned the whole wedding and coordinated the day of. They kept everything moving and made it so easy to just show up and enjoy the day! We couldn’t be happier and recommend having a wedding here more.
