First time here and would definitely stay again as a first choice. Excellent location in a clean, safe area.

Not my favorite

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

I stayed here for a night and it was just ok. Rooms were decently furnished and nice, but on the expensive side. Location is just OK with being in a mostly business district area tho I did not have much time this trip to explore all around. There are 2 lobbies so I'd recommend if you need a ride share to just go to the street and call. I made the mistake of calling from the formal lobby/reception area which is underground and got missed by a couple drivers before I sprinted to the street so I didn't miss my flight. The Valet and people working there are nice, but I would not listen to them that the rideshares know to come down to that level. The restaurant is decent if you're in the mood for Italian. The menu was a bit small so there aren't a lot of options for dinner. Breakfast also had limited options, but food was good. My one gripe with the breakfast was that it seems like the fancier a place wants to be the more unusable their coffee cups become. Their cups were these massive saucers with the tiniest handle to hold. Nice for a social media post, but not so nice on the functional side. And you just get one cup and nobody ever came by to offer a refill so drink it fast if you like it hot. There was some confusion (on their end) with a credit on my account that still hasn't been adjusted and the customer service after the fact has been not what I would expect from a higher end property.

Elegant and Exceptional

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I don't think I can recall a luxury hotel stay that was as comfortable and luxurious as our time at the Shangri-La Vancouver. The hotel is almost understated when you consider that the larger-than-life Paradox Hotel is just across the street with, and the Shang's driveway is almost hidden, but understatements cease there. The Shangri-La is, in a word, elegant, in every way imaginable. Another word I would use is exceptional. From the moment we arrived, on a very rainy day, every single member of the staff was prepared, willing, and cheerful in making our stay as comfortable as humanly possible. The hotel has 15 floors, an excellent spa and wellness level, a Michelin recommended restaurant (Carlino), and 119 beautifully appointed rooms and, somehow, impossibly, the staff made us feel like we were the only guests there. Even if none of the above amenities were on premises, the Shangri-La Vancouver is second to none in hospitality and what's remarkable is that it doesn't take any over-the-top gestures of lavishness to accomplish this. All it took was simple and attentive service with a commitment from each member of the staff to be helpful in fulfilling what are really just basic human needs that anyone would hope to have undertaken in any hospitality property. Whether it was front desk, concierge, room staff, spa and wellness, bellhop, host - everyone in this hotel just knew how to make the experience dignified elegant, and yet humble - If it's raining outside, there's an umbrella and, when you return, some nice ginger and honey tea. Do you need a good night's sleep? Here's a selection of pillows of varying firmness to help with that. Are you hungry after a long day's travel before dinner? There's fresh fruit and a note from the hotel manager to welcome you in your room and the hotel concierge is already texting you with places to eat nearby, ready to make reservations. Are you thirsty? Here's water. None of the above seem like anything particularly over the top or astounding, and one would think any hotel should have staff as attentive to such simple hospitality, but what makes this hotel a 5-star luxury experience is that everyone at the Shangri-La cares and appears to love what they do because it seems that the golden rule is in the design and very DNA of everything and everyone having to do with this hotel. We will never forget our stay and we will be back.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago
