The first thing that will surprise you about the Meliá Las Dunas is its exotic offer of bungalows with sea views. The Meliá Las Dunas provides modern and welcoming rooms for two people, individual use and for multi-occupancy. There are 5 different types of rooms, located in the two different areas: one for families and the other quieter area for adults or couples, and distributed amongst 2 storey bungalows with pretty views of the gardens and the sea. Their finely decorated interiors and luxury facilities ensure the enjoyment of an unforgettable vacation.

Melia Las Dunas – April 9–16, 2025 We recently stayed at Melia Las Dunas in Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba, with a large group of 19 family members, including children ranging from 4 to 15 years old. Sadly, our experience was far below expectations. We went in with open minds and realistic expectations—understanding that Cuba might not offer top-tier food—and we were prepared. However, what we encountered went far beyond food concerns and into serious issues with cleanliness, service, and basic hospitality. To start with something positive, the resort grounds were beautiful and well-maintained. But everything else left us extremely disappointed. Our rooms were old, dirty, and lacking essential items. We were provided only one thin sheet to sleep with, and the additional blankets smelled heavily of mold. The fridges were filthy—completely unusable for the snacks and drinks we brought specifically for the kids. The room phones didn’t work, and neither did the TV at first. Oddly enough, the maintenance person showed up before we even had a chance to call, which was concerning, although he did manage to get the TV running. Getting basic items like toilet paper and towels was a daily struggle. We had to repeatedly ask, almost beg, just to get them. With children in the group, this became especially stressful. These are not luxuries—these are basic expectations that were not met. Checking in was another headache. Despite arriving together as a group of 19, it took over two hours to get checked in. This was exhausting, especially with kids as young as four years old who had been traveling all day. The food was extremely poor in both quality and hygiene. There was little variety, very few kid-friendly options, and the sight of cockroaches in the kitchen made meals uncomfortable. The entertainment was equally disappointing—disorganized, low-energy, and not suitable for engaging children or families. To top it all off, some of our personal belongings went missing from our bags. When I spoke with the general manager about all of these issues—lack of supplies, unsanitary conditions, missing items—I was met with a shrug and told, “This is all we have.” That kind of indifference from hotel management is unacceptable. We didn’t come expecting luxury. We came to enjoy quality time as a family, and we would have been happy with clean rooms, working amenities, decent food, and basic hospitality. Unfortunately, even that was too much to ask. I hope this feedback is taken seriously—for the sake of future guests, especially families with young children.

I love all Melia hotels. They are all so nice but the food quality is just ok. Some days you have this and another day you do not. If you like your condiments, bring them. The beach is beautiful and the people are very kind. That is what makes Cuba, Cuba.

Just got home from MLD last night and wanted to write a review while everything is fresh in my mind. We got married at the this hotel in 2009 and decided to go back and show our daughter the resort. We reached out to the hotel prior to departure as we were returning guests and planned on celebrating our daughter’s 13th birthday while we were there. We were contacted by Miguel who immediately put us in contact with Annabelle who took better care of us than we could have ever imagined. We have been travelling to Cuba for 20 years and have never been treated so well. Annabelle is truly amazing. She cares so much about her guests and goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need and more. Even checked in on us on her day off! Annabelle decorated our room for our daughter’s birthday and planned a very special dinner for her with a birthday cake. We will miss you Annabelle but you will be the reason we come back next year! The resort has aged however the cleanliness, service and food are still top notch. Diane did a fabulous job keeping our room clean. The wait staff at restaurants and bars all provided top notch service. There were no lineups for food and you never had to wait for a drink. The servers at the entertainment pool were excellent. The nicest people who always had a smile on their faces. Food, although typical for Cuba we found very good. At the buffet we mostly ate from the grilling stations and pasta station and have zero complaints. (Nobody from our group got sick!) We will miss our morning churros from the buffet and pizza lunch from the Italian restaurant! (Get there early if you want pizza for lunch! They only have so many doughs per day and it goes quick!) We enjoyed the Columbus restaurant for dinner as well as the Oriental. Special thanks to Yilena for decorating for our daughter’s birthday dinner and having the entire restaurant join in singing Happy Birthday! That was something she won’t forget! Thank you MLD for an amazing week! We will definitely be back!
