Borgo Pignano is an elegant country estate in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, just a short drive from the historic, hilltop towns of Volterra and San Gimignano. A member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, the 750-acre organic estate blends a working farm with a world-class resort experience and also acts as an ideal base for exploring Florence, Siena or the vineyards of Chianti nearby. The former 18th century villa and hamlet dating from Etruscan times has been sensitively restored to capture the soul of Tuscany through its architecture, culinary and wellness traditions; with a contemporary twist.

We stay here Oct. 2024 for our Honeymoon and stayed in the attic suite -- the Toretta -- and it was fantastic. From the moment you arrive -- which the drive in is breathtaking -- the staff truly treats you like family and ensures everything you need or want is taken care of. From recommendations, to bags, to food and drink, they are there to help you. The grounds are fantastic and highly recommend a tour of the grounds to see all the villas, animals, and other items (pools, basketball courts) this place has to offer. The food at both restaurants we ate at were fantastic and some of the best food we have eaten. Each meal we had excellent staff that was always happy to see us -- Allen and Axel in particular -- and treated us so well. The infinity pool is from a dream and could have easily stayed at the pool all day. We ended the trip with a wine tasting from Mario who was so knowledgeable and friendly we highly recommended signing up. The place is also in close proximity to other towns and wineries to try (which we did and loved). Last but certainly not least -- was the man himself: Gigi. From the moment we entered the lobby, he introduced himself to us and made us feel like we knew him for years. He was the one who took us on the tour and knows everything about the grounds and has so many stories to share. He is so kind and funny, and we already miss him! When we checked out (which also the staff was sad we brought our own bags down to quote "it's your holiday, it's our job" -- was basically their motto) we didn't see him. On our drive out, we saw him and he literally pulled his car over, got out, and said goodbye by name and hugged us like old friends. If you go, tell Gigi hi for us. We will be back. Chad and Jackie

When I drove to this beautiful place, I didn't realize that this was the beginning of a disaster. 1. No hot water in the bathroom. I drove for 3 hours and couldn't take a bath to relax. I called the front desk and they did some checks but no further feedback until I called 4 times and finally told me that they could not do anything. I had to take a cold shower because I had a dinner appointment and I caught a cold the next day. 2. The hygiene of the bathroom was very bad. There were many small stones in the bathtub, and what was worse, the gap of the shower door was not sealed, causing water to flow into the bedroom once I took a shower. I spent a lot of time blocking the bathroom door with several bath towels to prevent water from flowing into the bedroom and staining the carpet. I was supposed to be here for vacation! 3. Even after checking out, something terrible happened. The front desk charged 2200 euros from my credit card at 6 o'clock the next morning. I was sleeping in another resort at the time. After receiving the bank's information, I spent time to check who deducted it, made many calls and sent emails, and it was already 7 o'clock in the morning when I received the email from the front desk about the operational error. It was a beautiful morning when I should have had a good sleep, but I spent an hour in anxiety and couldn't sleep. I have stayed in many places in Tuscany. This time I decided to come to Tuscany again to relax and relieve my sadness because my dog passed away. But one night here ruined my wish. I paid more than 600 euros and got the same experience as a budget hotel. The only comfort for me was the beautiful plants and flowers around the room, but I would not choose this place again.

A superb retreat. Everything about this place is impressive. It's all homegrown, the views are breathtaking and the hotel is beautifully put together. Firstly the food, breakfast was top quality, probably the best breakfast options and quality I've had, the sausages, the omelettes, the pancakes with pistachio cream and honey and the pastries - all delicious. Lunch was really really good, I had a burger and my wife had a chicken cacciatore. Dinner was also high quality. I can't fault the food. I would have liked to have tried the other restaurant that’s open during the summer. The views across to Volterra, and in between are simply staggering, I could sit there all day with a glass of red and take in the landscape (which is what I did on the first night). The room we stayed in was La Legnaia. A small room that is quite tight with suitcases etc. Despite that, a lovely room. We made use of the spa, the sports area, the walking trails, La Collezione Italiana and the wine tasting (hosted by Mario who was great and very generous). Gigi also took us on a tour of the estate in his buggy which was great fun and demonstrated how impressive the grounds were. A wonderful stay at Borgo Pignano and l'd love to return in the height of the summer.

What can I say other than this is the most remarkable welcome and hospitality from Gigi and the staff who were wonderful to my wife and Issi my 14 year old daughter. Like anywhere if you make the effort and engage the staff it becomes like a family who just take any stress off and are proud to work there which came across so authentically. Gigi took us on a tour of the wonderful site, the gardens where all of the fresh vegetables are grown and the perfumery with local herbs, honey and grape juice amongst others. I won’t mention the pigs ❤️ The new pool and gym facility is epic and for those cyclists out there bring your bike, if allowed 😉 . I cycled to voltera and around the challenging but jaw dropping beautiful countryside and got some coffee stops in on the way. The food, all freshly grown and made on site is sublime and you really get a sense of local quality shining through. Finally every time I walked across the courtyard at 530 am for my bike rides a member of staff appeared from nowhere and brought me a fresh coffee and was really pleasant given the time of day ( it was super hot so do go out early if it’s August time). Gigi hugged me when I left and I was actually rather emotional! It was like being at home in Cyprus again just with a Tuscan warmth.

It is impossible to articulate how much we enjoyed our stay at Borgo Pignano. It surpassed every expectation in all aspects, the staff were warm and welcoming, the food was perfection, the estate is STUNNING and our villa was one of the most beautiful buildings we have had the privilege of staying in. On arrival, we were greeted so warmly by Gigi who became a firm friend during our stay. He gave us a comprehensive tour of the estate, had so many good tips on how to enjoy our time and was a consistent friendly face. Even before we arrived, Jozefina was amazing in sorting our activities and transfers and when we got to meet her she was so lovely. A huge thank you to her, our trip was booked so last minute so she was amazing in getting everything sorted for us. The activities were excellent. The cooking class with Allesandro was so much fun and we loved eating our creations. The truffle hunting was also excellent, Luca was amazing at explaining the process and we felt so honoured to be able to work with him and his dogs. The estate has signposts everywhere so you can really enjoy all of the 250 acres around colour coded trails, beware the hills! The open air bar is amazing, the perfect spot to watch the sunset. The breakfast, perfect. So much of the produce is farmed on the estate down to the hens eggs. Our villa was breathtaking, stunningly decorated with a huge pool. For those in the main hotel, there is also the choice of two stunning pools. The products which are all produced on the estate are sensational - the whole villa is scented by home made room fragrances and every touch is so thoughtful down to using non-toxic cleaning products. I loved that you could order "shopping" so we had home baked bread, estate prosciutto and home made cookies delivered. The estate wine, you should not miss it! I could write a novel on how much I loved this property and this experience but I will just end by saying - book it and go. You won't regret it.
