Borgo Pignano is an elegant country estate in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, just a short drive from the historic, hilltop towns of Volterra and San Gimignano. A member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, the 750-acre organic estate blends a working farm with a world-class resort experience and also acts as an ideal base for exploring Florence, Siena or the vineyards of Chianti nearby. The former 18th century villa and hamlet dating from Etruscan times has been sensitively restored to capture the soul of Tuscany through its architecture, culinary and wellness traditions; with a contemporary twist.

We just finished a magical 3 night stay with our family of 4 (kid ages 10 and 7). Despite having some rain and cold weather, the resort did their very best to come up with activities to entertain the kids, which was appreciated. The property is massive and breathtaking. One of the more beautiful places I have ever stayed. Absolutely incredible with so many different types of stays (rooms, maisonettes, villas). The amenities are plentiful - gym, tennis, sport court for the kids, several pools, a billiards room, cooking classes and the list goes on. And the FOOD, WOW. This was the best food we had in Italy. The Michelin starred restaurant, Villa Pignano, was mind-blowingly good. They even allowed the kids to come with us to dine there and provided them with a kids menu, so there was something for everyone. We also ate in the more casual Medieval communal dining room one night and that was very nice as well. The only reason I have given 4 stars and not 5 has to do with our room. We stayed in one of the maisonettes, Il Granaio. It was a perfect size for our family with 2 en-suite bedrooms and an incredible view from the two terraces. However, despite maintenance coming to the room twice, we could not get hot water in the shower in the bathroom off the master - it got luke warm at best. So really, we only had one functional shower for our family of 4 our entire stay. My husband and I had to go downstairs to shower in the kid's bathroom each day, which was quite annoying. The staff seemed to know of this issue, but there was nothing they could do. If we were not moving around so much through the rest of our trip in Italy, we could have asked to switch rooms, but the pain to pack up 4 people and move again was a headache we couldn't stomach. Functioning showers with hot water is a basic necessity, especially at 5 star resort at this price point. Looking through past reviews on TripAdvisor, it appears we're not the only ones who have had this issue. I mentioned this problem again at check out and would have expected an offer for some sort of partial credit on our stay for the issue, but nothing. I could have pushed for it in hindsight, but the stay was otherwise fantastic and I simply was not in the mindset to complain. For management - suggest you figure out the hot water! We will certainly be back, but will confirm before doing so that all is in functioning order with the accommodation we choose next time.

Our new favorite place in Tuscany! Beautiful grounds and delicious food. A highlight for our family was the farm tour with Gigi! We enjoyed dinner at their green Michelin star restaurant and the medieval dining room. Our only regret was we didn’t stay longer!

Three nights just wasn't long enough!! This property is so amazing. From the moment we drove onto the property until the moment we had to say goodbye, we were treated like royalty. Our room, a beautiful attic room named Torretta, was so lovely and peaceful. We enjoyed massages at the Spa after our long travel from the States to Rome and then via car to Volterra. We had two dinners in the Medieval Fireplace Restaurant and one in the green michelin star restaurant, Villa Pignano. The food and service were superb. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast each morning with cooked to order egg options. Just fabulous! This was my first time enjoying pistachio cream. What a treat on pancakes and croissants. We hiked around the property following the well blazed trail markers. One day was rainy and we enjoyed spending time in the fitness room as well as visiting the artisanal workshop where we purchased shampoos, lotions and soaps that are in each room and are made on property. Wine tasting with food & beverage manager Mario was a delightful experience. Mario also took us under his wing at dinner and paired wines with our menu choices. And Gigi took such good care of us throughout our visit. He is indeed a quintessential Italian gentleman. Highly recommend this property for a relaxing time of pampering in Tuscany!

We stay here Oct. 2024 for our Honeymoon and stayed in the attic suite -- the Toretta -- and it was fantastic. From the moment you arrive -- which the drive in is breathtaking -- the staff truly treats you like family and ensures everything you need or want is taken care of. From recommendations, to bags, to food and drink, they are there to help you. The grounds are fantastic and highly recommend a tour of the grounds to see all the villas, animals, and other items (pools, basketball courts) this place has to offer. The food at both restaurants we ate at were fantastic and some of the best food we have eaten. Each meal we had excellent staff that was always happy to see us -- Allen and Axel in particular -- and treated us so well. The infinity pool is from a dream and could have easily stayed at the pool all day. We ended the trip with a wine tasting from Mario who was so knowledgeable and friendly we highly recommended signing up. The place is also in close proximity to other towns and wineries to try (which we did and loved). Last but certainly not least -- was the man himself: Gigi. From the moment we entered the lobby, he introduced himself to us and made us feel like we knew him for years. He was the one who took us on the tour and knows everything about the grounds and has so many stories to share. He is so kind and funny, and we already miss him! When we checked out (which also the staff was sad we brought our own bags down to quote "it's your holiday, it's our job" -- was basically their motto) we didn't see him. On our drive out, we saw him and he literally pulled his car over, got out, and said goodbye by name and hugged us like old friends. If you go, tell Gigi hi for us. We will be back. Chad and Jackie

When I drove to this beautiful place, I didn't realize that this was the beginning of a disaster. 1. No hot water in the bathroom. I drove for 3 hours and couldn't take a bath to relax. I called the front desk and they did some checks but no further feedback until I called 4 times and finally told me that they could not do anything. I had to take a cold shower because I had a dinner appointment and I caught a cold the next day. 2. The hygiene of the bathroom was very bad. There were many small stones in the bathtub, and what was worse, the gap of the shower door was not sealed, causing water to flow into the bedroom once I took a shower. I spent a lot of time blocking the bathroom door with several bath towels to prevent water from flowing into the bedroom and staining the carpet. I was supposed to be here for vacation! 3. Even after checking out, something terrible happened. The front desk charged 2200 euros from my credit card at 6 o'clock the next morning. I was sleeping in another resort at the time. After receiving the bank's information, I spent time to check who deducted it, made many calls and sent emails, and it was already 7 o'clock in the morning when I received the email from the front desk about the operational error. It was a beautiful morning when I should have had a good sleep, but I spent an hour in anxiety and couldn't sleep. I have stayed in many places in Tuscany. This time I decided to come to Tuscany again to relax and relieve my sadness because my dog passed away. But one night here ruined my wish. I paid more than 600 euros and got the same experience as a budget hotel. The only comfort for me was the beautiful plants and flowers around the room, but I would not choose this place again.
