Deep Valley Disappointment

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 14 hours ago

Ten miles from the coast, deep in Carmel Valley lies Bernardus with lovely views as well as sunshine and warm weather when the coast is socked in with fog. Unfortunately, the purported tranquility is a bit of a charade as road noise from super busy Carmel Valley Rd. can be heard all day throughout the resort. The public facilities and the guest rooms have an odd aesthetic -- sort of a mix of mid century modern and rustic flea market. This strange juxtaposition is worsened by other odd elements such as industrial style handrails throughout the resort and utterly tacky "dividers" between adjacent balconies that are spray-painted plastic decorative features (approx 4' x 4'). These horrible features are also used as artistic hangings on exterior walls. In fact, the property, in general, looks a bit tired -- the exterior stucco on structures is old and faded. The tennis courts are cracked with weeds growing in the crevices. The landscaping was unattended with little blooming in early August. Dining all comes from one restaurant, Lucia, which I sampled for 5 meals over a 3 day period. They passed the eggs Benedict test for breakfast (i.e., eggs poached properly and good hollandaise) and that was my best meal. There were several misses, e.g., grilled artichokes that came in an onion gravy like something served over take-out egg foo young, or a deconstructed chicken saltimbocca (minus the requisite parma ham) that was dry as a bone. Lunch is served on the breezeway and under the pergola connecting the lobby and pool area. Unfortunately, this area is sterile without a single container of flowers or hanging baskets. The pergola has no vines growing over it -- instead you're left to stare at stained and soiled canvas sun shades. It couldn't be less inviting and I elected to snack in my room midday instead. The Lounge is a bit of an afterthought and the bar itself is very small, too brightly lit and worn. The front mirrored panels are surrounded by chipped wood strips and the marble top is marred. The unengaging bartenders have a terrible habit of running the dishwasher during evening service which sounds like starting a lawn mower. Strangely, also, the dining room wait staff (with their dowdy uniforms) are required to go behind the bar to retrieve their drinks causing constant congestion and unnecessary crosstalk. The lack of a service bar is a significant shortcoming to efficient service. While my room had a shaded balcony with lovely views, 2 of the teak deck chairs were broken. The shower was "open" without a door which is not a favorite as it allows cold air to permeate. Worse, the drain cap was recessed in the tile floor almost 1/4" creating an under foot hazard and sharp edge. I had a facial at the spa, B+. The the valet parking team was top notch. That pretty much adds up to 2 stars for Bernardus.

Most relaxing getaway

Bernardus is the most relaxing, beautiful property, excellent spa, pool area, gorgeous rose garden and Lucia Restaurant is 5 star in my opinion - each meal is perfection and the staff is so professional, attentive and accommodating - I celebrated my 70th birthday at Bernardus and felt like a Queen, can't wait to go back!

Excellent stay at Bernardus! Enjoyed two extremely restful nights with excellent room and car service, delicious meals, on an elegant campus. Could not recommend more strongly if you’re in the area and looking for a luxury stay at a solid price point. Best sleep we’ve had in so long!

"The Bernardus Lodge was wonderful. My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the lodge and found it very relaxing, romantic and the service was beyond exceptional. They were attentive to every need and always made us feel like their top priority. We also visited the spa and had a wonderful experience. We will definitely go back!"
