About the Hotel

The Hideout is located east of Cody and Yellowstone National Park in the hamlet of Shell in the foothills of The Big Horn Mountains. Located East of Cody and Yellowstone Park in Shell, Wyoming, we are an all-inclusive, upscale riding and horsemanship guest ranch limited to 25 guests weekly for a 6-night stay. Family owned and operated since over 25 years, we offer a very personal, small, and intimate Western riding experience. While The Hideout offers a limited number of non-riding activities like trap shooting, archery and takes pride in a nice, heated lap pool, this ranch is all about riding, horsemanship, and horses. Elevations in this area range from 4,200 to 13,100 feet and offer a unique variety of terrain and scenery resulting in a broad range of climates and biodiversity. With close to 650,000 acres to explore you will seldom ride the same trail twice or feel crowded. Perfect does not exist, but our goal at The Hideout is to offer our guests an almost perfect riding and equestrian experience, hiding out from the rest of the world. This is a truly unique place where everybody, guests, staff, and horses feels cared for and respected.

Best in the west

Spectacular! This was our third trip to the Hideout. The horses are excellently trained, well maintained, and are an absolute pleasure to ride. The wranglers and horses took us mountain climbing, bushwacking, and loping through the open range. We also had the quiet beauty of walking through tumbling creeks and eating lunch under the sunlit trees. If you like to ride this is the ranch for you. Hospitality is a priority at the Hideout.

Riding Like It Should Be in A Place Like No Other

Our fourth return trip to this western paradise was the best yet! I've never been disappointed in the amenities or the staff during past visits, but they all went out of their way to make the guests happy and feel heard and pampered. Exceptional wranglers willing to go above and beyond to set up the guests for success in riding was what set this experience apart this year. I can't wait for our next trip.

Crème de la creme

This is my third year in a row. I do a fair amount of riding at home. Arenas and trails and cows. The trail riding at the Hideout is beautiful, fun and challenging. The beauty of this business is that they take you on rides that suit your abilities. This year there were 10 of us from Idaho and everyone had a great time because we were comfortable with the riding experience. Half days or full days, your choice. The food has been great every year. The staff are fun and knowledgeable. The rooms are perfect. Honestly, I can’t think of one negative about the Hideout. I can’t wait for next year. I can’t seem to kick it off my bucket list. Thank you to all the Hideout staff.

Went for the riding and got so much more!!

My dream was to gallop across a field in big sky country. While Big Sky country is considered Montana, Shell Wyoming and the Big Horn mountains delivered! From an amazing welcoming arrival at the gorgeous resort, this ranch and the family that run it and their staff are amazing. The accomplished and friendly Wranglers make sure that you and your horse are a good fit and guide you on trails that the horses are well suited for. I rode across countryside that I’ve only ever seen in westerns and up-and-down mountains. The horses were amazing and I got to ride my first Mustang-Peter Pan; he was adorable! The wranglers made sure we had plenty of pictures of each of us in the incredible landscape and vistas. Although I came for the riding, I took a break mid week and did some clay shooting and nailed a bull’s-eye in archery. That afternoon we took a horsemanship clinic with the owner. I can’t say enough about this place, The food was amazing, and it was special to eat together at the big dining table in the lodge. I went as a solo, but came away with several new friends. Don’t hesitate; this will be your best riding adventure ever!

I love The Guest House Lodge & Ranch

The horses are well fed and very well trained. The Wranglers make you feel safe where ever you ride. The desert and mountains are simply, overwhelming amazing. We took a ride looking for wild Mustangs and found a herd of about 80. So beautiful to see them running in nature. The cabins are so well appointed. The food is ample and tasty. All of the staff in every part of the operation is amazingly supportive, kind, and aware of your needs. The owners make it so special. My daughter and I have made two trips to The Guest house. We wouldn't go anywhere else.
