About the Hotel

In 2013, media mogul Ted Turner purchased Sierra Grande Lodge & Spa near Turtleback Mountain in New Mexico. Why? The area’s geothermal Hot Springs, frequented by Native Americans like Geronimo, have been the cornerstone of this Old West retreat for nearly 90 years. The lodge’s rooms & suites feature rustic wood furnishings and Native American décor, and the spacious two-bedroom Casita provides comfort, privacy and panoramic views of the mountainous landscape. Chef Miyazaki focuses on the American Southwest, with menu items such as Black Truffle Steak and Maple Leaf Cherry Port Duck. The Spa at Sierra Grande utilizes the natural geothermal spring underneath the lodge to create private pools and soothing baths in the mineral-rich water.

Relaxing, quiet and refreshing!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We came to Sierra Grande to relax and get away. They are pet friendly (25 lbs or less is welcomed). We brought our newly adopted puppy too. We had never heard her bark, in the two and half weeks we had had her. Three days in she barked and it was wonderful and embarrassing. The employees were very sweet and understanding. We also didn’t take advantage of their generosity either. I can’t say enough wonderful things about the hotel, comfort and care that was dedicated to us and the rest of the other guests. We had a wonderful couples massage and the daily soaks in the hot springs there were amazing! Truth or Consequences the town was friendly and quiet. We stayed during the week of Christmas. The older down town is all walking distance from the hotel. Great bookstore with rare books, records and art work. There were still plenty of shops open and welcoming. Great coffee shops and restaurants. It was a great experience and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a small town, quaint, rustic, artistic and natural healing experience! Thank you!

One of the most relaxing stays!

The lodge is built around relaxation. We didn’t realize how much we craved this until we were checking out. The private soak time is well worth the stay alone. The staff was friendly and helpful and the accommodations nice. We will stay here again when we’re in the area.

Rundown property at premium prices

I'm baffled how this place has so many good reviews. We saw online that the rooms looked small, so we booked the "Ted Turner Suite," hoping for a luxurious stay. Wrong! We paid well over twice what it was worth, and the only reason I gave it two stars is for the mineral baths and the tour of Ted Turner's Ladder Ranch. The room looked like it had been decorated from a 1997 garage sale. The curtains had black marks and were torn, and the furniture was beaten up. The first day, the light above the shower blinked on and off, and it sounded like the exhaust fan would fall out of the ceiling. They fixed the light and made the fan sound slightly better, but the cabinets and disgusting tile in the bathroom were 30 years past needing to be updated. The mineral soaks were pretty good, although one tub (in the first room to the left as you enter the spa) was tiny and smelled like mildew. The outside tub was wonderful, but as soon as we got in, the landscaper fired up the earsplitting leaf blower, making it impossible to relax. When I complained, I was told, "He's only here for a short time." I replied, "So am I, and I'm paying a lot to be here!" I had to explain to this supposedly "sustainable" property what a destructive environmental nightmare leaf blowers are. Thankfully, the staff made the guy stop, and they extended our soak, but I was already not in the mood. The breakfast buffet was another letdown. It looked promising, but the food was cold, and they often "forgot" to put out basics like butter and cream cheese for the bagels and toast. The restaurant isn't open otherwise, which would've been nice because there weren't many options around. Also, no one cleaned our room the second full day we were there. In the afternoon, I asked the front desk staff to empty the trash cans and give us more towels, and when we returned to the room, the towels were there but so was the trash. I had to call again to get someone to bring a can so I could dump them myself. At the price we paid, this is unreasonable. We enjoyed the Ladder Ranch tour, but I specified that we wanted a birding guide, and no one told us that she was off for the Thanksgiving weekend. The guide we had, Heidi, was a beginning birder, but we really liked spending the morning with her and visiting several great sites on the property in addition to looking for birds. Also, management made us go out with her at 6:30 a.m. when it was still freezing out, so we didn't start seeing birds until late morning. They should change the tour hours in the winter for folks who want to bird. Also, the buffet doesn't open until 7, so we got a cold pastry and fruit cup instead of a real breakfast. When we complained, the staff apologized, but it was clear management didn't care, or they wouldn't rent rooms in the condition ours was in. One employee said the general manager would be there the morning we left, but we never saw or heard from her. This was one of the least relaxing stays I've ever experienced and will not be back.

This place goes above and beyond to make you feel like a welcome, valuable guest. The accommodations are historic with just the right amount of updates. Really nice breakfast and sun drenched patio! Terrific attention to detail. Highly recommend.

Relaxing experience

The place is amazing and relaxing. The rooms were fantastic. The mineral baths are a great experience and you get a complementary 30 minute soak with the booking. I had the best deep tissue massage by Pam which I would highly recommend booking- she is the best
