With echoes of billiard balls, poker chips, and clinking glasses frozen within its walls, this 1890’s Venetian Gothic landmark in the Chicago Loop springs back to life as an incomparable historic downtown Chicago hotel—where the spirit of play reigns supreme. After all, this is the city where the can-and-will-do attitude of Ernie “Let’s Play Two!” Banks lives on, where the father of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, shook all night long at the Checkerboard Lounge, and Sir Duke tickled the ivories at The Blue Note. And this is the club whose historic members swam with five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller—a.k.a. the original Hollywood Tarzan—and watched their fellow member Pudge Heffelfinger own so much end zone, he became football’s first pro. Today, Chicago Athletic Association is both a stunning hotel offering outstanding guest rooms and a historic monument to the big-shouldered, switch hitting spirit that defines our city with a downtown location in the Chicago Loop.

So, my sister and I have frequented the CAA hotel quite often, but this past week was our first stay as guests. What an amazing space you have so beautifully renovated. We loved sitting in the lobby admiring the decor, detail work in the walls, arches, fireplaces, and tiles. We had fantastic meals up at Cindy’s—with fantastic staff including Michael, Erin, and Anthony. Our bedroom was fantastic—with pommels for bed benches and comfortable beds. We didn’t have a room with a view, but we were serendipitously treated to the gorgeous smells of morning breakfast cooking downstairs when we cracked open the windows—coffee and biscuits are delightful wafting up the brick walls. Lastly, Joyce Chen is an amazing concierge with fabulous tips to see Chicago in her finest. Thank you, Chicago Athletic Association. My sister and I won’t stay anywhere else! Thanks!

The hotel lobby and common spaces are beautiful. It was also nice to have quick access to the rooftop restaurant at Cindy's. However, the rooms were quite small and underwhelming. Lot's of dated quirks such as the upper floors being really room at night (our room was in the high 70s despite cranking the air as low as we could), and the elevators had long wait times. I would recommend a different Hyatt and just stopping by to check out the lobby if you're really curious about the hotel, that's the highlight.

I booked this hotel primarily for the lobby. I loved the look of it and could not wait to enjoy a cocktail after dinner or a coffee and book in the am, etc. Unfortunately that is not even close to being an option. The lobby and game room are packed with people pretty much around the clock. One morning when I was able to find a spot, I was promptly asked to move since it was reserved. The hotel is open to public and also seems to have a lot of reserved seating for outside businesses. I inquired at the front desk if there was a place in the hotel to sit aside from our room and I was told "unfortunately not". The rooms are small and dull as I had expected, but I had not planned on spending all my time in it when were weren't exploring the city. To add insult to injury, there is an amenity fee when there are zero amenities for hotel guests.

The hotel is unique and a great place to stay. Fabulous service and great views of Millennium Park. Very comfortable beds. Great shower. The lobby and game room are awesome. The food in the Cherry Circle Room was delicious and great intimate ambiance. Perfect for a downtown staycation. Will be back.
